Item Affective Commitment: The Role of Work Life Balance and Organizational Pride (With Special Reference to XYZ Glove Manufacturing Company in Sri Lanka)(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2019) Nadeeshani, M.H.C.S.,; Nishanthi, H.M.The current study tested the impact of work life balance (WLB) and organizational pride on affective commitment. Even though many determinants of affective commitment and WLB have been extendedly researched, the impact of organizational pride on these main variables were not greatly visible especially in terms of Sri Lankan context. Hence the main purpose of this research was to identify the impact of WLB on affective commitment by exploring the mediating mechanism of organizational pride. The current study is a cross sectional study comprising a sample of 134 junior executive and above level employees. The data were gathered using simple random sampling technique in XYZ Company. Primary data collected through a standard questionnaire distributed via google doc. and paper and pencil surveys. SPSS version 23 was incorporated for data analysis. The hypotheses were analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient, linear regression analysis. Findings revealed that WLB has a significant positive impact on affective commitment as well as organizational pride. Further, it was revealed that organizational pride has a significant impact on affective commitment of junior executive and above level employees in XYZ Company. Apart from that, organizational pride partially mediated the relationship between WLB and affective commitment. Thus all hypotheses were accepted. Organizational pride not previously research in collaboration with other variables. Hence, researchers recommended that to uplift the organizational pride would have a greater impact on creating the relationship between WLB and affective commitment.Item Assessment of the Factors Affecting Students' Satisfaction towards E-Learning: A Study of University Students in University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka(Department of of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2020) Livera, R.T.B.; Peiris, M.D.P.This study was conducted to assess the factors affecting students' satisfaction towards E-learning. Quantitative and deductive approaches were used for this study, and the study population was university students at the University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka. Further, the sample was selected using the simple random sampling technique. This study's independent variables were participants' interaction, e-learning flexibility, elearning quality, students' learning style, and digital literacy. The primary data were collected from 121 respondents through a questionnaire distributed in a Google form. To analyze primary data, SPSS was used. It was found that the independent variables, participants' interaction, e-learning flexibility, e-learning quality, and digital literacy, are factors that significantly influence the students' satisfaction towards e-learning. Further, this study found that there is no significant relationship between the learning style of students and students' satisfaction towards e-learning. The present study would provide direction to the policymakers, university administrators, university academic staff, system designers, and future researchers.Item Attitude of Health & Safety Management and Turnover Intention of Industry Level Employees in Colombo Dockyard PLC(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Gunathileka, S.N.; Pieris, M.D.P.Human resource is important asset for a firm to gain a competitive advantage. However, it is very difficult to maintain health and satisfy of a firm’s employees. Therefore it is very important to investigate employee’s attitude on health and safety management on their turnover intention. Health and safety management is an important point to retain employees of a company. Thus, this study will examine the relationship between employee attitude on health and safety management and their turnover intention of industry level employees on Colombo Dockyard PLC. To accomplish objectives quantitative research method and questionnaire are used in order to collect primary data. The sample consists of 40 industry level employees. SPSS was used to analyze the data. Research results can be used as a guideline for the organization to have better understand the significance of health and safety management of their employees. Furthermore, it will help design and implement health and safety management strategically to retain employees. In addition to that, results of this research can be used by other companies to implement health and safety management measures for the benefits of their employees.Item Auditor-Client Relationship as a Source of Value Addition for Audit Firm: A Descriptive Study of Audit Firm in Sri Lanka(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2019) Gayani, K.A.U.,; Peiris, M.D.P.; Darshani, R.K.N.D.Today value-adding activities are more critical than profit-maximizing in an organization, businesses are concern about the value addition to the organization in deep manner. Relationship building with the client chain can be defined as a major source that adds value to the organization. Even though the previous scholars have identified the necessity of value-adding activities in the service sector their focus towards the auditing sector in Sri Lankan context is low. This is a qualitative deductive study sample was selected in purposive sampling among the population of ManagersAssurance, Senior Audit Associates and Audit Associates grade 1 & 2 from Kreston Sri Lanka. Individual interviews, focused group interview and observations were conducted to gather data. Thematic analysis was used to analyze data. Results of the study identified as there is a direct impact between auditor’s commitment, communication effectiveness and audit tenure in order to add value to the audit firm. Further, it recognized that there is a moderate impact between auditor’s perceptions towards the client and value addition. Human beings can follow the above results while interacting with others in their routine. Moreover, it is important for their employees to maintain good health and well-being a crisis like COVID-19 pandemic. Extant research has found that factors that influence the behavioral and psychological responses to coronavirus disease include age, gender, monthly income, and level of education. However, most of these studies are based on Western countries. Therefore, we know little about the Sri Lankan situation. Thus, the aim of the study was to identify behavioral and psychological responses to corona virus infection in Sri Lankan garment workers. The study is cross-sectional in nature and researcher collected data from 750 employees in the garment industry in Sri Lanka. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and data were analyzed with the aid of the SPSS software. One-way ANOVA and independent sample t-test were used to test the hypotheses. The results show that there is a significant mean difference of age, gender, monthly income and education level when employees show the behavioral responses towards the pandemic. The results of this study provide significant contribution to health and safely literature. Further, the research tries to compare the findings with western world findings to see whether there is a similarity of career expectations between Sri Lankan Generation Y and Western world’s Generation Y. Present Study was done using a convenient sample of 100 undergraduates of three major Management faculties: University of Sri Jayewardenepura, University of Colombo and University of Kelaniya. A questionnaire designed by the author associating Broadbridge, Maxwell, & Ogden (2007) work which summarizes an array of Generation Y career expectations under four categories found in the popular researches those had been carried out till 2007 was used to collect data from a stratified random sample. The findings of the current research shows that career expectations of Management Undergraduates of Sri Lankan Y Generation have both similarities and differences compared to the generalized career expectations found in Broadbridge et al. (2007) work. And the findings did not show substantial differences with respect to gender but researcher showed that there is a significant difference of career expectations based on their upbringing stages of lives and the professional qualifications. Future research must focus in doing an exploratory study based on pure Sri Lankan sources without associating European famous researches to identify whether there are especial expectations inherent to Sri Lankan Y generation those have not been highlighted in European studies. And it is suggested that similar researches should be done using more heterogeneous Generation Y samples and using larger samples to see if the outcomes change.Item Challenges to Online Learning in the Time of Covid 19: A National Survey of Undergraduates of Arts Faculties of State Universities in Sri Lanka(Department of of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2021) Madhusankha, L. A. C. J.; Wijewantha, P.The COVID-19 outbreak required all Sri Lankan state universities to move from face-to-face teaching and learning to online instruction in March 2020. This research aims to determine the challenges that undergraduates in the arts faculties of Sri Lankan state universities confront in this situation. The authors distributed the Google form to the students of arts faculties via email and social media platforms to collect data. The questionnaire included multiple-choice, Likert scale, and open-ended questions about demographic information, technical resource access, study habits, living conditions, self-evaluation of online learning capacity, and perceived barriers to acquiring knowledge using the internet. The research was carried out as a national survey. Based on the data collected, there were both opposition and acceptance towards switching to online learning platforms due to students' real impediments and perceived issues. The outcomes of this study are critical for undergraduates, academic and administrative personnel, and all government organizations responsible for higher education to make future decisions about online teaching and learning, even beyond COVID-19. Based on the findings of this research, a strategy for the successful implementation of e-learning may be formed, and technology can be viewed as a good step toward development and transformation.Item Challenges to online Learning in the Time of COVID-19: A National-Level Survey of Undergraduates of Management Faculties of State Universities in Sri Lanka(Department of of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2021) Lankathilaka, H. M. M. C.; Wijewantha, P.In March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced all Sri Lankan state universities to stop face-to-face teaching and learning activities and abruptly shift to online teaching. Given this situation, this study aims to identify the challenges faced by undergraduate students in the management faculties of state universities in Sri Lanka during this teaching-learning process. The authors shared a Google® Form among undergraduates of management faculties of state universities in Sri Lanka through email and social media platforms for data collection. The questionnaire comprised a combination of multiple-choice, Likert scale, and open-ended questions, with the expectation of obtaining demographic information and information about access to technological resources, study habits, living conditions, self-assessment of capacity for online learning, and perceived barriers to online learning. The study was undertaken as a survey, and the authors collected 822 responses. Descriptive statistics are used for the analysis of data. Among the 822 respondents, 65% owned at least one device, and 56% of the sample were using pre-paid mobile data to access online resources and attend lectures. Out of the respondents, only 27% had been in the highest 27%. Furthermore, the results indicated that the students were able to survive at this level because 58% of them have had some form of financial scholarship. Challenges experienced by students in the online learning process could be classified under five categories: technological, individual, domestic, institutional, and community barriers. The findings of this study are significant for all state universities (undergraduates, academic, and administrative staff) and all government institutions responsible for higher education for their future decision-making related to online teaching and learning in any situation beyond the pandemic of COVID-19. Based on the findings of this study, a strategic plan could be developed for the successful implementation of e-learning and view technology as a positive step towards evolution and change, irrespective of whether there is a pandemic or not.Item Closing the Financial Literacy Gap: Strategies for Empowering Sewing Machine Operators(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka, 2022) Ayeshmantha, M. K. M.; De Alwis, A. C.Financial security is a critical component of a happy life. In addition to offering the much-desired tranquility and freedom of mind, financial autonomy may also provide prospects for growth, advancement, and success. Given the current economic climate, it is essential for all individuals. Further, there is insufficient research on the impact of financial literacy on investment choices, particularly in the context of sewing machine workers in Sri Lanka. Given this context, the primary goal of this research was to determine if financial literacy has a significant impact on the individual investment decisions of sewing machine operators at Kx Apparel Solutions Limited. This study's methodology is quantitative research. All of Kx Company (875) sewing machine operators are included in the present research population. According to the Morgan table with a 95% confidence interval, 269 samples were employed using the basic random sampling approach. The questionnaire was created by combining information from previous research, including financial product knowledge, financial product assessment, investment knowledge, money management, and financial skills. In the current study, the relationship and effect of the variables were assessed using the chi-square test and linear regression under the curve estimate. The study's findings demonstrated a strong correlation between financial literacy and individual investing choices. Additionally, financial knowledge and money management abilities have a statistically significant influence on individual investing choices. The result revealed that financial literacy has a positive and significant influence on the investing decisions of sewing machine operators. Moreover, when focusing on the component of financial literacy, money management and financial ability have had a substantial influence on the degree of investment choices. The aforementioned money management and financial skills must thus be enhanced. The influence of financial knowledge on investing decisions is just 64.6%. As a result, there will be additional elements for the influence of financial literacy, allowing researchers to better their study in this regard. Based on the findings of this study, the researchers argue that increasing financial literacy knowledge base training and attaining financial literacy is a cost-generated product for a person with that business to create more human capital, therefore closing the gap. In this context, further financial counseling is recommended as a new work function.Item The Comparative Study of Generation X and Generation Y; Their Work-Life Balance(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka, 2024) Chandrarathna, W. D. P. S. H.; Welmilla, I.The prevailing economic crisis in the country led the organizations to enhance worklife balance within every organization because nowadays every person is struggling to live. Therefore, the objective of the current study was to identify the differences between Generation X and Generation Y. This study intends to contribute to filling the theoretical and empirical gap in the existing literature within the Sri Lankan context. Hence this was a quantitative and cross-sectional study which was based on an organization in Informational Technology Industry. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire using a convenient sampling technique. T-test for sample groups were used to measure the difference between the two generations and to test the advanced hypotheses of the study by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The analyzed results show that there is a significant difference between Generation X and Y in their work-life balance. Furthermore, this study is a move for organizational management to take necessary actions to create satisfied employees within the organization with the support of supervisors and peers. Moreover, this study was limited only to one particular company in the Informational Technology Industry in Sri Lanka and all 235 employees are included in the population for this study. Stratified random sampling was used to select the sample from the population. Therefore, the current study suggested that to conduct the study by considering all organizations in the business world within Sri Lanka to get an effective output from future research.Item Comparative Study of Work-Life Enrichment of Freelancers and Permanent Employees in IT Industry(Department of of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2020) Kumari, M.R.M.U.; Welmilla, I.With the present situation of the world, there is more concern about the work familyrelated concepts. Most of the researches are tend to research this area. Most of the previous studies focus on the negative side of the work-family concept that is workfamily conflict. This study primarily focused on work to family enrichment and family to work enrichment, which is the positive side of the work-family concept. This study aimed to investigate the difference in work-life enrichment between freelancer employees and permanent employees in the IT industry. It was hypothesized that the two employment types of freelancer employees and permanent employees differ in their work-family enrichment. This study covered employees working in the IT industry in the Colombo area in Sri Lanka with a sample size of 208, and data were collected through a structured online questionnaire. The hypotheses were tested by using the independent sample T-test. Findings revealed that there is a significant difference between the freelancers' and permanent employees' work-family enrichment. This study concluded that the practitioners are encouraged to implement the freelance working culture to gain more advantages to get better outcomes for the work and family domains. Further, this study is a key attempt to identify the freelancers and their present perspectives.Item Conceptualizing Innovative HR Practices of ABC Company Pvt Ltd as Practiced During Covid 19 Pandemic Period(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka, 2022) Illangarathne, S. M. R. K.; Devadas, U. M.The spread of COVID-19 has created a huge disruption, in almost all organizations in practicing human resource management. The focus of this study is to reveal such innovative HR Practices by a leading company in the apparel industry and how those practices have supported the company to survive during the crisis. The research questions are set for knowing the changes in the performance behaviour of ABC Company, innovative HR Practices; and challenges and issues that aroused during COVID. A qualitative research approach was used with the constructivist research paradigm to design the study as a single case study. A narrative review was done to uncover the phenomenon in question. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews to gather data from Deputy General Manager, HR Assistant Manager, Compliance Manager, and an Executive at ABC Company. The study found performance behaviour changes like productivity drops, profitability drops, higher ETO, and order cancellations while the findings are mainly expected to highlight the innovative HRM practices adopted by ABC Company during the pandemic period Innovative HR practices included the bubble concept, the organizational own counseling service, the initiation of FM service for health talks, the introduction of the FCR (Facial Recognition) system, the E-Leave process, scenario planning, flexible hours, and encouragement of self-directed knowledge seeking. Main challenges were societal pressure, family pressure, government restrictions and limitations, connectivity issues, time constraints, less manufacturing adaptability, and difficulty in ensuring employee well-being. The study recommends proper investment appraisal on innovative HR practices, encouragement of E- Leave Processes, ensuring a proper balance in usage of virtual platforms, ensuring self-directed knowledge seeking, and proper consideration of the implementation of the bubble concept can be considered.Item The Contribution of HRM Practices to Foster the Green Concept(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Lakshini, I.M.; De Alwis, A.C.Green practices are environmental friendly manufacturing and minimizes the negative influence on the environment through the diverse business activities. Business organizations pay more responsibility to safeguard environment. Human Resource Management is a most significant to practice this aspiration within the organization. Human Resource Management assists towards this aspiration as a representation developer and as a model. As a model Human Resource Management Department use diverse Human Resource Practices to execute Green Concept within the organization. Here researcher strives to identify, according to Sri Lankan context what and how Human Resource Management practices are contributed for execute of the Green Concept within the organization. Researcher selected four Human Resource Managers as the sample from four leading garment factories in Sri Lanka. Depth- interviews were used gather data, and used content analysis to analyze the gathered data. According to the findings, some of the Human Resource Practices in the selected companies are not fostering the green concept, and Human Resource Practices which are being contributed on green concept are not contributed precisely. The current research has not found any HRM practice which is fully contributed on the green concept.Item Determinant of Success of Operational Level Employees Empowerment: Evidence from Operational Level Employees in Apparel Manufacturing in Sri Lanka(5th HRM Student Research Symposium 2018, Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Wijethilakaka, P. D. M. C.; Weerasinghe, T. D.The concept and the practice of employee empowerment Human Resource Management is an important concept for the apparel sector as well. Because empowerment leads to both job satisfaction and organization’s goals achievements. Highly satisfied staff is most important in achieving this target. Therefore, this study attempts to investigate the factors of success of employee empowerment with special reference two garments factories in Kegalle and Gampaha area. In deciding the sample size of the Supporting employees for this research the researcher used 100 operational level employees for the sample. To test the hypothesis of this study, primary data were used. Primary data were collected through comprehensive Questionnaires given to Machine Operators and Supervisors. The data which collected from the questionnaire, analyzed descriptively using tables, frequencies and percentages. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 23 was used for statistical analysis process. Those data presented by using tables and graphs. According to the participants’ responses and the analysis of this study employee empowerment has a positive and significant impact on organization culture, leadership style, communication style and self-esteem leads towards higher level of employee’s empowerment. This study contributes to overcome the problems of employee empowerment in apparel sector and given a fair idea that which factors affected to the success of employee empowerment in apparel industryItem Determinants of Academic Performance: A Study among the Undergraduates of Sri Lankan State Universities(5th HRM Student Research Symposium 2018, Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Rupasinghe, P. D. D. H. K.; De Silva, G. H. B. A.The purpose of this study is to perform a scientific study on the causality of academic performance level in comparison with the emotional level of the undergraduates. Therefore, the general objective of this study is to assess the impact of emotional intelligence on level of academic performance among state university sector undergraduates in Sri Lanka. The researcher adopted a mixed method approach to scientifically collect data, analyze and come to a conclusion. The first half of the methodology was based on quantitative methodology and the findings of the statistical analysis was validated and confirmed using the qualitative data. The final sample consisted of 211 undergraduates selected at the convenience of the researches, from state universities in Sri Lanka. Data for the statistical analysis was collected through a structured questionnaire. Convenience sampling technique was applied to select the sample. The data was analyzed using Excel, SPSS and Atlas ti. The statistical analysis provided the correlation, chi square, and logistic regression that confirmed the direction of the relationship between the Emotional Intelligence and the Academic Performance. The results from Correlation Analysis, show that there is a weak positive relationship between emotional intelligence and level of academic performance. The gender of the undergraduates moderates the relationship between emotional intelligence and the level of academic performance. The qualitative data analysis reveals that there are seven factors other than Emotional Intelligence to determine on the level of academic performance. The found factors are commitment, language, work life balance, capacity, awareness, stress, medical reason, happiness and social media. The findings of the current study again confirm the general notion that the importance of emotional intelligence has been a must needed feature in learning partnersItem Determinants of Cyberbullying: A Study of Management Undergraduates of State Universities in Sri Lanka(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka, 2022) Galagamaarachchi, G. A. A. N.; Janadari, M. P. N.The purpose of this study is to determine the factors affecting cyberbullying behaviours among state university management undergraduates in Sri Lanka. In this research study, cyberbullying is the dependent variable, social media use is the independent variable and cyberstalking is the mediating variable. The research was a cross-sectional study and a quantitative study. As the sampling method, simple random sampling was used for selecting the sample. The primary data was collected using a standard measurement scale that was created using the five-point Likert scale. The target population was 2500 Management undergraduates of state universities in Sri Lanka. Morgan table was used to calculate the sample size. Accordingly, the sample size was 378. Additionally, the target population's primary data was gathered using the online questionnaire. With the use of SPSS encoding validity, reliability, descriptive statistics, regression, and correlation of the obtained data were analyzed. It was found that cyberstalking has a significant mediating impact on cyberbullying. Furthermore, findings indicate that social media use and cyberstalking have impact on cyberbullying behaviours and social media use and cyberstalking are determinants of cyberbullying behaviours among undergraduates.Item Determinants of Emotional Intelligence: A Study of the Employees of XYZ Organization(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka, 2022) Ramsil, F. R. M.; Weerasinghe, T. D.The purpose of this research is to identify the determinants of the emotional intelligence of employees. This study examined the determinants of emotional intelligence adopted by Bar-On’s (1997) Emotional Quotient Inventory and that encompasses Intrapersonal Skills, Interpersonal Skills, Stress Management, Adaptability and General moods. In addition to that, this study intends to contribute to fill the knowledge gap by looking into the associated factors for EI among employees. There is less research context in Sri Lanka to test the emotional intelligence of employees. This research was conducted using quantitative research method. Executive and above level employees of XYZ organization were chosen as the population of the study. Convenience sampling technique was used. Sample size was 113 and primary data collection was done through a self-administered questionnaire. A Google form was created and distributed to collect data. The number of employees who responded was 104 among 113 employees. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), version 26.0 was used as tool for data analysis and both descriptive and inferential statistics, namely correlation and regression were used to analyze data. The study results indicate that intrapersonal skills, interpersonal skills, stress management, adaptability and general mood have a significant positive relationship with emotional intelligence. S. M.; Janadari, M. P. N.The purpose of this research is to identify the determinants of employee commitment of Generation Y employees in Apparel sector of Western province, Sri Lanka. Organizational justice, job satisfaction, personal characteristics (gender, educational level) and work-life balance has evaluated as independent variables with the dependent variable organizational commitment. Data was collected from 380 employees working in Mas, Brandix and Hirdramani plants in Western province through a questionnaire. A Google form was created and distributed to collect data. Statistical package for social science (SPSS), was used as for data analysis and correlation and regression used to analyzed data. The findings revealed that organizational justice, job satisfaction and work-life balance have a significant impact on organizational commitment. Furthermore, this study proves that there are significant differences between gender, and education level on organizational commitment. D.; Padmasiri, M. K. D.This study focused on investigating factors affecting job satisfaction of non-executive employees in ABC (Pvt) Limited. The study used quantitative methods and survey strategy was followed. Data were collected using a standard questionnaire from 101 non-executive level employees. Findings revealed that there is a strong relationship between salary and job satisfaction and poor relationship between supervisor support and employee job satisfaction. Findings suggest to provide a reasonable salary for employees in order to enhance their job satisfaction and improve management practices to train supervisors, obtain frequent employee feedback to ensure supervisor support while removing communication barriers
