Item Abuse of Library Materials by the Undergraduate Students with Special Reference to Main Library, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Dayananda, A.P.M.M.D.B.; Jayawardana, K.G.I.; Malkanthi, D.G.A.S.The study sought to identify abuse of library materials in the Library, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. User malpractices of Library materials by highlighting, underlining, removing papers/ parts of the page, damaging barcode labels, call number labels and damaging or defacing library materials is a threat to the library collection. Such practices can be described as abusing of the library materials. This survey was conducted with following objectives; to identify the various forms of abuse, to examine the reasons for the abuse and to suggest the possible solutions to protect the library collection. The survey was conducted by using questionnaires with close and open ended questions. Students (240) were selected for the study and out of it 204 were responded and the rate was 85%. The responders mentioned that text books were mostly abused material in the library and respondents gave their answers to the ways of abusing library materials mainly tearing away pages, folding pages, writing on pages of the materials. According to the reasons for the abuse of the information materials, 62% of students mentioned that high demand of a particular book, 58% limited copies of the information materials, 48% poor photocopying machine and 30% indicated selfishness. The respondents proposed a variety of strategies to protect the collection too. The study recommended that abusers should be subjected to heavy and well defines penalties and mount cameras (CCTV) in the library. The number of copies of demanded text books should be increased. Improving photocopying services of the library. Introduce and electronic system as RFID machines. Regularly reviewed set of library instruction should be drawn.Item Acceptance and Usage of Moodle Learning Management System among Academics in the University of Kelaniya(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Wickramasinghe, D.; Suraweera, S.A.D.H.N.The purpose of this research is to analyze acceptance and usage of Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) amongst academics in a selected public university. 71 academics were responded from four faculties i.e. Social Sciences, Humanities, Commerce & Management Studies, and Computing and Technology in the University of Kelaniya. The printed questionnaires as well as online questionnaires were distributed among the lectures. The findings reveal that a gap between high acceptance and low actual usage. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was the framework used for this study. Finding of this research revealed the hypotheses such as academics’ attitude towards using LMS is influenced by the perceived usefulness. Academics’ behavioral intention to use LMS is influenced by their attitude towards using LMS. Academics’ acceptance of learning management system is high in University of Kelaniya. The data revealed that the academics use the LMS more for ‘assignment’. Some activities such as Mootyper, SCORM package, Workshop, Wiki, Survey, Choice and Glossary should be more utilized. The URL was the most used Moodle resource and the least resource was IMS content package. So IMS content package, label should be more utilized and need to conduct proper trainings to get a successful engagement in Moodle LMS.Item An Analysis into the Understanding of University Students in the Knowledgebase on the Palm Leaf Manuscripts(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Neththasinghe, N.; Nishanthi, M.; Premarathna, M.With the advancement of technology in the world, discoveries have emerged. This has resulted in many changes in the local and foreign education sectors. When it came to local education, it was clear that the indigenous qualities we inherited from the ancestors of the past should be preserved in an era of decaying age. In this case, particular attention was paid to the nationally highly valued Palm Leaf Manuscripts which anyone is not paying attention nowadays. The Palm Leaf Manuscripts contain a wealth of local knowledge related to various subject areas. The research investigates whether Sri Lankan university students were aware of Palm Leaf Manuscripts. It examined the students' understanding of why Palm Leaf Manuscripts are a locally valued heritage that should be preserved. The contribution of students from the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was obtained for this purpose. Students were provided with a questionnaire to collect the data needed for the research. Data analysis showed that they had a general understanding of Palm Leaf Manuscripts.Item An Analysis of Indian Research Output in Open Access Journals (Doaj) From 2003 to 2019(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Satish, S.This paper attempts to discuss in the context of Indian research output contribution in open access journals indexed in directory of open access journals (DOAJ). Open access journals is a service that provides access to quality controlled open access journals and benefits researchers in increased visibility of their research work. This study analysis the open access initiatives in India, position of indexed journals in India with other countries. This study also analysis the findings in the context of contribution according to countrywise, yearwise, subjectwise, publication processing fee, journals licensing and publisher wise during 2003 to May 2019 with respect to Directory of open access journal. DOAJ was analyzed on 1st June 2019 and India ranked fourteenth with (n=277) open access journals worldwide according to countrywise contribution after Russia and Switzerland. The growth rate of research output increased from the year 2016 (n=33) onwards. This paper analysis the Indian contribution in Open Access journals in DOAJItem An Analysis on the Distribution of Legal Deposit Copy under the Legal Deposit Law in Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Sanjeewani, M.D.S.M.In each and every country there is a legal deposit law and there is a national collection based on national information and national bibliographic control policies and guidelines. When considering the legal deposit of laws and tradition of Sri Lanka, the National Printers and Publishers Ordinance of 1885 No 1 specifies that all publishers should be registered under law in the National Archives Office in Sri Lanka. According to this law a publisher or the printer should submit five copies of each published book or Newspaper to the Department of National Archives (DNA) and the DNA will distribute these books or items among preservation or legal deposit libraries in Sri Lanka. The principal objective of the study is to explore what is legal deposit law of Sri Lanka and the process of distribution of deposit copies received under legal deposit law in Sri Lanka among respective libraries, to examine the norms and principles of selecting libraries which maintain and deposit the legal deposits, to investigate the importance of collecting the legal deposit and the need of collecting legal deposit, and to examine issues and problems of legal deposits, to investigate the weaknesses of Sri Lankan legal deposit law and to identify new trends in legal deposits and the law. For this study survey method is used. As the sample 25 persons among the population of experts of library and information science, librarians, educationalist and researchers are selected. For the primary data collection the above mentioned a structured questionnaire will be administered among the above sample. It is essential to conduct an interview among the experts. After that categorizing and refinement of data types, the summarizing, gaining percentages and data analysing are done. The results will be presented using tables, graphs and diagram.Item An Analytical Study on the Library Acquisition Policy of Public Libraries: Study based on the Public Libraries in Kegalle District(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Kumara, H.U.C.S.All Libraries should follow library policies for success services and activities. Public library proved user’s present needs and future needs and also parent body needs. Therefore public library should follow acquisitions policy success their goals and objectives. This research main objective to study library acquisition policies followed by Public Libraries in Kegalle. The secondary objective was analysing the library acquisition policy if enacted. Survey methodology was used in the research in which both qualitative and quantitative data were gathered. The research sample consists of 5 Public Libraries in Kegalle District. They were situated at Kegalle, Mawanella, Rambukkana, and Ruwanwella Pradeshiya Sabhas. The study observed a 100% absence of a written library acquisition policy in researched libraries. The study observed a 100% absence of a policy in activities. Conclusions of study the libraries do not follow a library acquisitions policy. There is no written library acquisitions policy as well. A written library acquisitions policy has to be introduced to each library to be set as a guideline to standardize the activities done in the librariesItem Attitudes of International Students on the Use of University Libraries: a Case Study based on University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Judith, N.This paper aims at investigating international undergraduate students’ library use and their attitudes and perceptions towards the library at the University of Kelaniya. These students' library use as well as their perception are explored since the number of foreign students in the university is increasing therefore librarians ought to improve their commitment to enhance library services for this special community of users. Besides, this paper explore the number of students who do and do not use the university library both physical and online access and services. Study population is total international students at University of Kelaniya and a sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling formula. Study applies survey research design. Primary data will be collected using structured questionnaire, observation and using interview technique. It determines how to increase the number of the users, identifies how the library has benefited those students that use it since academic libraries have a great impact on students education in the university. This paper examines the situation of the current library settings which is to be improved by the librarians in a proper manner and it is viable to improve a cordial dialog and relationship between the library staff and the international students. Customer care, library marketing and public relations are some of the key areas which should be developed among the library staff.Item Collaboration Process between the Department of Library and Information Science and the Main Library: a Case Study based on University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Weerasooriya, W.W.R.W.M.C.S.K.Collaboration is the process which any organization in society can engage based on mutually agreed policies and practices with any other organization or group of organizations. Without a proper collaboration with other allied bodies and the profession of Library and Information Science (LIS), the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), University of Kelaniya is unlikely to keep up with these developments and deliver a good education and service in line with the international standards of teaching, research and information management. As a very good example, the establishment of DLISs in the main libraries in certain Indian university can be demonstrated. Professor Ranganathan was the creator of this concept. In that situation, building a good collaboration is very valuable for both the DLIS and with other related institutions specially the Main Library, University of Kelaniya. According to these situations the principle purpose of this paper is to study the collaboration process between the DLIS and the Main Library University of Kelaniya. The other objective are to explore what are the collaborative activities conducted by both institutes, to identify additional collaborative activities they can start, to examine what are the barriers for collaboration and to explore how such collaborative activities would impact for student academic and moral success. Method adopted is a case study followed by mixed research approach hence primary qualitative and quantitative data will be collected conducting interviews with both academic staff at the DLIS and the Main Library, of University of Kelaniya library. Focus group discussion method will also be used for further collecting data and information related to study. Secondary sources like DLIS and the Main Library records and reports will be given much impact for the study when secondary data collection. Results, findings and conclusions will be used for effective functioning of the collaboration between DLIS and Main Library.Item Collaborative Practices of Using ICT in Special Libraries in Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Dharmathilaka, W.D.With the rapid growth of information, it has had an impact on the library industry as well. Collaboration is important to every type of libraries. Often the information in all fields is important to the research community. Due to the rapid growth of information, research output, the collaboration is specific to specialized libraries. Other support services for special libraries, different factors affecting to the area in which the library is located, library resources, communication facilities etc. are some of the grounding factors where a collaboration is very much required when thought of special libraries. The problem in the study is why the collaborative practices required for the special libraries is in Sri Lanka, what is it present status, how it is used and so on. The main objective of the research is to study whether ICT is being used to implement special library collaboration activities in Sri Lanka. Other objectives include identifying information technology used in implementing collaboration strategies, identifying barriers when implementation of collaborative practices in practice, and suggesting strategies to mitigate barriers to collaboration. The study used the special libraries in the Colombo, Sri Lanka. 50 special libraries were selected as a sample in the Colombo district. It composed of 78% of special library category. This study applies quantitative technique. It is expected to use primary and secondary sources to collect data for study. For collecting secondary data books, periodicals, databases and internet sources are expected to use. It is expected to circulate questionnaire among 50 librarians in the selected for the sample. The presentation of data in the study is aimed at submitting logical information with tables and graphs with proper use of analytical techniques.The study is expected to be completed in the second quarter of the third year of the BA Honors Degree in the Department of Library and Information Science at the University of Kelaniya.Item Community Awareness on the Right to Information Act (RTI) No 12 of 2016(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Lakmali, H.A.N.The communication is conveying information and ideas among the relevant persons. It is an essential component for all beings including humans. Information is the vital element for human for solving their problems. The human who is curious in nature suffers from thrust for the information, seeking and the use. Hence the information which have become a basic need of the man perform a major role in very many activities of the daily routine. In democracy, the right to information has been considered as a basic human need. As a result of this, the information access, transparency, responsibility have been major concentrations of any government and the delivery of genuine information and the participation of the community in obtaining and the use information are expected through this act. RTI Act no 12 of 2016 was established on 3rd of August 2016. The awareness and the usage of the act by authoritative institutions have been considered as a timely necessity. Therefore the main objective of this study was to examine the community awareness, operations of the Authorities, challenges faced by them. And finally to suggest the solutions to overcome the challenges. The primary data was collected through questionnaires, and interviews. The secondary data was collected through Internet, books, manuals, reports. As a whole, although the awareness on information act was in a satisfactory level, the usage was not satisfactory. Hence, the awareness programs should be conducted through schools, universities, libraries, press media and social media. D.Palm leaves manuscripts were the very famous printed material in the past of Ceylon and other many South Asian Countries. In Sri Lanka, a many of People used to write the knowledge which should be preserved for the future generations, on palm leaves manuscripts. So they have printed their knowledge which they had upon Buddha’s Dhamma, literature and grammar of the languages called Sinhala, Pali and Sanskrit etc., Astrology, Ayurvedic Medicine, Esotericism and all valuable knowledge. Today, though we cannot available the full amount of palm leaf manuscripts which was produced by the past people we can use the preserved books among them. Many of books are stored in the libraries of several ancient Buddhist Temples in Sri Lanka. And Some are available at the British Library, London because that books were carried to the British in British Period of Sri Lanka. So, in this study a content analysis is done on a palm leaf manuscript called Poth Liyamane Anisaṃsa which is available at the library of the School of Oriental & African Studies (University of London). The study reveals the benefits of the writing Buddha’s Dhamma Book while based on the content of Poth Liyamane Anisaṃsa.Item Continuous Professional Development Programs Conducted by the Public Libraries in Sri Lanka: a Study based on Selected Public libraries in Western and Uva Provinces(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Senarathna, K.I.D.This paper is an attempt to study the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Programs in public libraries in Sri Lanka. Continuous Professional Development the means by which members of respective profession develop, maintain, improve, and broaden their knowledge and skills and develop the personal qualities required to uplift their professional development. The principal purpose of the study is to examine the status of participation of public librarians for the Continuous Professional Development Programs in Sri Lanka. The other objectives are to explore what is the level of participation of public librarians in CPD, to identify the institutions offering CPD programs, to identify what are the most productive and effective CPD programs which are very fitting to public libraries and librarians and to explore the basic benefits of CPD and to investigate its performances. Method of the study is the survey research. The research studied under selected Municipal councils, Urban Councils including Pradeshiya Sabha, in Western and Uva provinces and the libraries selected in the grades 1st, 2nd, and 3rd as based on the criteria laid down by the National Library and Documentation Services Board, Sri Lanka. Primary data will be collected through site visit, discussion followed by the observation both participatory and non-participatory. Further data would be collected using two separate questionnaires focusing the librarians and resource persons and the concerned institutions. For collecting the secondary data, web site and data and statistical reports of the Ministry of Local Government and provincial council are used. The research information will be presented on what is the CPD, why is it needed, how public librarians would participate for the CPD Programs. The attentions will be given who will support for the public librarians in the process, what are new CPD programs to be introduced, what are new tendencies, problems, and challenges of these CPD programs. Accordingly, based on the survey data findings and conclusions will be drawn for the future betterment of the relevant filed and the CPD.Item The Contribution of Library Tradition for Ancient Education System in Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Kumara, D.G.T.U.; Dilhara, W.A.L.P.After arrival of Arahath mahinda in 3rd centuary BC, different sectors in the country were chaned in to new arena including the education. With inclresing number of Maha Sanga in that period, their educational needs were very complex and vivid. Pirivena education came into seen with the idea of changing the ducation system into proper education. The small room where one or few Bikkus were lived and learned was changed in to larger recidences which became Pirivenas or Buddhist educational centers. Eventually these centers of leaning were opened not only to Bhikkus but laypersons too. Pirivena became the mother for the evelvement of libraries in Sri Lanka. First Pirivena library was established at Mahavihara. According to historical sources there have been sevaral branches of pirivenas to Mahavihara and there were too libraries. Art of writing and writing tradition was started by the then Bhikkus based on Budhism. That was helful to develop library system and tradition in Sri Lanka. The questionnaire and interview were used as instruments in this study to collect data. The study revealed that the public libraries of Polonnaruwa District are not in the correct position by collection development. P.An institutional repository is defined as an online locus for collecting, preserving, and disseminating the intellectual output of an institution in digital form, particularly a research institution (New World Encyclopedia, 2018). Generally it includes materials such as journal articles, conference papers, peer reviews, electronic versions of theses and dissertations from an academic institution. The main purpose of this study is to share the experiences of setting up an institutional repository (IR) at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) and make suggestions to overcome the challenges for sustainability of the repository. Empirical method is used with the participatory approach in this study. Furthermore, the study focuses on some key issues to be considered when developing the repository. The institutional repository of KDU library network has developed by using D-Space software and running with a separate internal server. Formulating repository policy framework, authority control, copyright issues and persuading the academic staff to deposit their publications were considered as major challenges in this study. A surveyconducted using a questionnaire method with a response of 229 library professionals to examine the integration of mobile apps in the library and for its services.Survey results showed thatwhile the library professionals used already available apps in the store for supporting library operations,self- built apps for the libraries found meagre (11.80%). Through these apps, they offer services like membership, book renewal, SMS alert, e-resources and reference query services. The study also found the novel use of social media for supporting library operations like live streaming, reference advisory and information sharing. The results of the study suggest opportunities for the libraries to develop their own library app for satisfying the user’s information needs at the right time.This is certainly first of its kind at the national level to explore the library professionals’ use and adaption of mobile apps in libraries.Item Digital Preservation Strategies at the University of Peradeniya Library.(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Maheswaran, R.The purpose of this paper is to provide an account of digital archiving and preservation practices and processes successfully implemented at the University of Peradeniya Library. This Library Digital Preservation is the Process for maintenance of Digital Resources over the long-term with a view to ensure sustained accessibility. The scope of the Digital Preservation, which started with faculty research papers, has been enhanced to accommodate research papers, speeches/lectures, office orders/memorandums, videos, annual reports and the in-house database. It also tried to explain all the aspects with a practical approach that are planned for digital preservation for its research publications and other collectionsItem Disaster Management in Libraries: a Study based on the Museum Library of Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Amarasooriya, Y.W.N.D.As far as human history is concerned, disasters have been occurred simultaneously and the libraries evolved in the society faced the same disaster issues that have been damaged to intellectual resources owing to the fact. Although disaster management plans have been prepared in collaboration with disaster management experts in many countries around the world to prevent and respond to such incidents, libraries in Sri Lanka are still not satisfied with disaster management's interest, contribution and the workload. The main objective of this study is to identify the physical resources and human resources which are vulnerable for disasters of the Museum Library of Sri Lanka and disaster management activities and to present a suitable disaster management plan. Other objectives of this study are to investigate why the management of the institute was not interested in developing a disaster management plan and to educate the library professionals on disaster management. The Museum Library of Sri Lanka is used as the sample. Techniques like the observation and interviews are used to gather primary data for the research. Data analysis is carried out using the Excel software. A disaster management plan can be proposed for the libraries to face any challenge and to prevent disasters. In that plan, preventing the disasters, main preparedness, responding, and reconciling are the components of such a plan. These factors are taken into account in the Disaster Management Planning Proposal for the Sri Lanka Museum Library.
