Item An Analysis into the Understanding of University Students in the Knowledgebase on the Palm Leaf Manuscripts(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Neththasinghe, N.; Nishanthi, M.; Premarathna, M.With the advancement of technology in the world, discoveries have emerged. This has resulted in many changes in the local and foreign education sectors. When it came to local education, it was clear that the indigenous qualities we inherited from the ancestors of the past should be preserved in an era of decaying age. In this case, particular attention was paid to the nationally highly valued Palm Leaf Manuscripts which anyone is not paying attention nowadays. The Palm Leaf Manuscripts contain a wealth of local knowledge related to various subject areas. The research investigates whether Sri Lankan university students were aware of Palm Leaf Manuscripts. It examined the students' understanding of why Palm Leaf Manuscripts are a locally valued heritage that should be preserved. The contribution of students from the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was obtained for this purpose. Students were provided with a questionnaire to collect the data needed for the research. D.The field of training for librarianship began in 1887 with Dewey's School of Library Economy at Columbia University. Librarian like any other professional, a professional librarian should possess best qualities. It is clear and obvious that there was a good library service and learned librarianship from the origin of the civilization and the introduction of writing tradition concurrently. In this paper, special attention has been given to investigate the qualities as well as the manner of devaluation of librarian and the service, gradually. Meanwhile, there probed and explored requirement of regaining and restoring the floating state of library service in Sri Lanka. Defines these qualities as: aptitude; adaptation; retentive memory; scholarship; personality; efficient administration; ability to communicate; and current awareness. It stipulates a complete knowledge of the reference collection, integrity, fitness and a linguistic ability of the librarian. The information revealed by this research project would be useful for researchers, academics, students, University Community as well as administrators or Management Boards for future development plansItem An Analysis on the Distribution of Legal Deposit Copy under the Legal Deposit Law in Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Sanjeewani, M.D.S.M.In each and every country there is a legal deposit law and there is a national collection based on national information and national bibliographic control policies and guidelines. When considering the legal deposit of laws and tradition of Sri Lanka, the National Printers and Publishers Ordinance of 1885 No 1 specifies that all publishers should be registered under law in the National Archives Office in Sri Lanka. According to this law a publisher or the printer should submit five copies of each published book or Newspaper to the Department of National Archives (DNA) and the DNA will distribute these books or items among preservation or legal deposit libraries in Sri Lanka. The principal objective of the study is to explore what is legal deposit law of Sri Lanka and the process of distribution of deposit copies received under legal deposit law in Sri Lanka among respective libraries, to examine the norms and principles of selecting libraries which maintain and deposit the legal deposits, to investigate the importance of collecting the legal deposit and the need of collecting legal deposit, and to examine issues and problems of legal deposits, to investigate the weaknesses of Sri Lankan legal deposit law and to identify new trends in legal deposits and the law. For this study survey method is used. As the sample 25 persons among the population of experts of library and information science, librarians, educationalist and researchers are selected. For the primary data collection the above mentioned a structured questionnaire will be administered among the above sample. It is essential to conduct an interview among the experts. After that categorizing and refinement of data types, the summarizing, gaining percentages and data analysing are done. It is an essential component for all beings including humans. Information is the vital element for human for solving their problems. The human who is curious in nature suffers from thrust for the information, seeking and the use. Hence the information which have become a basic need of the man perform a major role in very many activities of the daily routine. In democracy, the right to information has been considered as a basic human need. As a result of this, the information access, transparency, responsibility have been major concentrations of any government and the delivery of genuine information and the participation of the community in obtaining and the use information are expected through this act. RTI Act no 12 of 2016 was established on 3rd of August 2016. The awareness and the usage of the act by authoritative institutions have been considered as a timely necessity. Therefore the main objective of this study was to examine the community awareness, operations of the Authorities, challenges faced by them. And finally to suggest the solutions to overcome the challenges. The primary data was collected through questionnaires, and interviews. The secondary data was collected through Internet, books, manuals, reports. As a whole, although the awareness on information act was in a satisfactory level, the usage was not satisfactory. Hence, the awareness programs should be conducted through schools, universities, libraries, press media and social media. Collaboration is important to every type of libraries. Often the information in all fields is important to the research community. Due to the rapid growth of information, research output, the collaboration is specific to specialized libraries. Other support services for special libraries, different factors affecting to the area in which the library is located, library resources, communication facilities etc. are some of the grounding factors where a collaboration is very much required when thought of special libraries. The problem in the study is why the collaborative practices required for the special libraries is in Sri Lanka, what is it present status, how it is used and so on. The main objective of the research is to study whether ICT is being used to implement special library collaboration activities in Sri Lanka. Other objectives include identifying information technology used in implementing collaboration strategies, identifying barriers when implementation of collaborative practices in practice, and suggesting strategies to mitigate barriers to collaboration. The study used the special libraries in the Colombo, Sri Lanka. 50 special libraries were selected as a sample in the Colombo district. It composed of 78% of special library category. This study applies quantitative technique. It is expected to use primary and secondary sources to collect data for study. For collecting secondary data books, periodicals, databases and internet sources are expected to use. It is expected to circulate questionnaire among 50 librarians in the selected for the sample. Through the use of e-resources, academics and students now have access to global electronic information resources for their scholarly communication. This paper presents and analyses the status of electronic resources facilities and services provided by the Kelaniya University Library (KUL). It also discusses the purpose of using e-resources, benefits, subject coverage status, overall user satisfactions, problems that are faced by KUL users while accessing e-resources and perceived impact of e-resources on users.Item Sustainable Academic Library Transformation Approach: Hybridizing University Publication Collection of Ruhuna University Library(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Fernando, I.D.K.L.; Senevirathna, R.A.P.STransformation of academic libraries and its services marked a prevailing necessity at the present days, where almost all the aspects of peoples’ lifestyles are digitally disrupted. Library transformation is a time consuming, serious process that should be conduct with a proper plan. However, the sustainable way of library transformation will add more value to the patrons and the suitable future to the library. Hybridization of library collection is such proactive approach that can initiate at most of the academic library levels. Present study selected university owned copyrighted collection maintained since 1985 as the source of hybridizing. These artifacts were digitized though a cascading process until it reached up to 80,000 pages. Digitization were outsourced under the supervision of library staff. The collection was kept physically at the library shelf while the digitized materials were archived in an online institutional repository (IR). The IR was based on DSpace version 6.3 and customized according to the requirements of the university. Materials in the collection were classified and catalogued into the KOHA integrated library management system, while linking to the IR. Ultimately, a library collection that hidden as gray literature were opened to a vast community though hybridizing. As a result, the collection is now available physically and electronically, accessible from any cloud device, and visible through multiple search interfaces. Accordingly, it was able to identify key issues related to the usage of e-government applications and suggestions were made to improve citizens’ awareness and the usage of e-government serviceItem A Study on the Awareness of Green Library Concept: with Special Reference to Selected Library Professionals in Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Warnasooriya, W.W.S.T.A global interest on green library concept has come into existence in libraries across the world as a current necessity. But a rapid green trend in the countries such as Sri Lanka is primitive. The level of the awareness on green concept has become a reason responsible for the current green environment in the university libraries in Sri Lanka. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to examine the awareness on green library concept among selected university library professionals in Sri Lanka. The study was conducted based on the research framework which consists of five criteria namely, library building, operations and practices, programmes and services, information systems and library collection. The Survey method was used to gather data from randomly selected 13 academics in university libraries in western Province. Conducting interviews were the main tool used for primary data collection and self-observation was supportive to verify the collected data. According to the data analysis, 100% of librarians have heard about green library concept. Only 36% of librarians were actually aware of green concept. The main source of awareness was web sites. 71% of librarians believes that the non – awareness affects green movements in their libraries. Therefore, it was evident that the awareness on green library concept and its applications is not in a satisfactory level among the academics in university libraries. Hence, the most suitable and the very first action to be taken by the side of libraries or mother institution should be conducting awareness programmes.Item Abuse of Library Materials by the Undergraduate Students with Special Reference to Main Library, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Dayananda, A.P.M.M.D.B.; Jayawardana, K.G.I.; Malkanthi, D.G.A.S.The study sought to identify abuse of library materials in the Library, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. User malpractices of Library materials by highlighting, underlining, removing papers/ parts of the page, damaging barcode labels, call number labels and damaging or defacing library materials is a threat to the library collection. Such practices can be described as abusing of the library materials. This survey was conducted with following objectives; to identify the various forms of abuse, to examine the reasons for the abuse and to suggest the possible solutions to protect the library collection. The survey was conducted by using questionnaires with close and open ended questions. Students (240) were selected for the study and out of it 204 were responded and the rate was 85%. The responders mentioned that text books were mostly abused material in the library and respondents gave their answers to the ways of abusing library materials mainly tearing away pages, folding pages, writing on pages of the materials. According to the reasons for the abuse of the information materials, 62% of students mentioned that high demand of a particular book, 58% limited copies of the information materials, 48% poor photocopying machine and 30% indicated selfishness. The respondents proposed a variety of strategies to protect the collection too. The study recommended that abusers should be subjected to heavy and well defines penalties and mount cameras (CCTV) in the library. The number of copies of demanded text books should be increased. Improving photocopying services of the library. Introduce and electronic system as RFID machines. Regularly reviewed set of library instruction should be drawn.Item Usage Patterns of Medical Information E- Resources among Postgraduate Medical Doctors in Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Dilhani, M.P.P.The main focus of the research was to examine the Usage pattern of electronic resources by the postgraduate medical doctors in Sri Lanka. . The study was carried out for researchers who are doing study to explore the information usage patterns of postgraduate trainees at the Postgraduate Institute of Medicine, University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. Questionnaire method was used to examine and collect data from the research scholars. The collected data has been analyzed with the help of Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS). The results revealed that there is a significant difference among researchers in different age groups who are familiar with utilization of electronic resources. The population of the study consisted of graduate school teachers in government schools in Sri Lanka. The sample consisted with 440 teachers and cluster sampling method was applied for the sample selection. A selfadministered questionnaire was used as the main data collection tool and the received data were analyzed SPSS (21.0). The study found that most of the teachers need information on particular subject that they taught, followed by classroom management and teaching resources and it was found that there is no significant relationship between the factors and teachers' information needsItem Usage of Health Information Resources of Rural Women in Perambular District of Tamilnadu(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Balasubramani, R.This paper aims to examine the perception and use of health resources in Perambular District of Tamilnadu. The prime objective is to find out how rural People using health information and sources and how they perceive the advantages of health resources and problems for accessing them. Data were collected from 300 Rural Women in Perambulaur District of Tamilnadu. The questionnaire consists of 15 main questions with many of them having a number of subsidiary questions. Questionnaires and Oral Interviews were the main instruments used for data collection. The articles also explained information needs, sources, channels and information seeking behavior. G.; Kumara, A.G.R.P.Due to various activities such as educational, research, economic, political and cultural activities, information flowing to human knowledge has become a major stream. With the fast of beginning this information, readers' information needs are rapidly growing, and information is so closely linked to human life. The responsibility of transmitting the information thus generated to the reader and inheriting it for future needs rests with the Library and Information Centers. Though there is internet, its access for general public particularly the marginalized communities has been a severe problem and made a severe information gap too. In this context public libraries extend information services for all communities. Public libraries can be introduced as an institution for all people with equal access to all members for knowledge, information and imaginative purposes through a wide range of resources and services. The main objective of this research is to study the usefulness of public libraries in the achievement of reader information needs. Identifying the information needs of the readers, identifying the nature of the information required for the readers, identifying the types and sources of information, how important are the public libraries to the information needs, what are the existing problems, and the personal development of the readers, information literacy. How important are public libraries to developing reading skills.The Population of the study comprised of public libraries established in Sri Lanka and the research sample was five public libraries in five districts in the three provinces. The research method was the survey design and used questionnaire and the interview technique. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, such as tables, charts and percentages.As a result of the research, it was found that public libraries are not in a proper status of satisfying the user’s information needs. It was also revealed that users face several problems when they find information. This is mainly due to lack of up-to-date information sources in the library, lack of good information management, lack of reader advocacy programs, lack of familiarity with the staff and lack of support and guidance from staff in fulfilling information needs and services. This ensures that public libraries need to implement an effective, efficient and informative mechanism for accurately identifying user’s information needs.
