Item Collaboration Process between the Department of Library and Information Science and the Main Library: a Case Study based on University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Weerasooriya, W.W.R.W.M.C.S.K.Collaboration is the process which any organization in society can engage based on mutually agreed policies and practices with any other organization or group of organizations. Without a proper collaboration with other allied bodies and the profession of Library and Information Science (LIS), the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), University of Kelaniya is unlikely to keep up with these developments and deliver a good education and service in line with the international standards of teaching, research and information management. As a very good example, the establishment of DLISs in the main libraries in certain Indian university can be demonstrated. Professor Ranganathan was the creator of this concept. In that situation, building a good collaboration is very valuable for both the DLIS and with other related institutions specially the Main Library, University of Kelaniya. According to these situations the principle purpose of this paper is to study the collaboration process between the DLIS and the Main Library University of Kelaniya. The other objective are to explore what are the collaborative activities conducted by both institutes, to identify additional collaborative activities they can start, to examine what are the barriers for collaboration and to explore how such collaborative activities would impact for student academic and moral success. Method adopted is a case study followed by mixed research approach hence primary qualitative and quantitative data will be collected conducting interviews with both academic staff at the DLIS and the Main Library, of University of Kelaniya library. Focus group discussion method will also be used for further collecting data and information related to study. Secondary sources like DLIS and the Main Library records and reports will be given much impact for the study when secondary data collection. Results, findings and conclusions will be used for effective functioning of the collaboration between DLIS and Main Library.Item Use of Information Communication Technologies for the Conservation and the Propagation of Sri Lankan Indigenous Medicine(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Ransara, P.W.A.S.D.Sri Lankan Indigenous Medicine (IM) is a science of from its existence. It is not a transmission of theoretical knowledge, but a practical set of rules, norms and a proper knowledge system that help to preserve and maintain the well-being of the body and the soul of people. Dissemination of Indigenous Medical knowledge through modern ICT while preserving it with latest technological know-how is time important. Accordingly, the research will be an exploratory study of the uses of ICT for the preservation and the propagation of indigenous medicine in Sri Lanka. The main purpose of this paper is to study the role of ICT in the preservation and dissemination of indigenous medical knowledge in Sri Lanka. In addition to that, the study focusses on identifying the attitude of IM doctors towards the use of information technology for the conservation and propagation of Sri Lankan indigenous medical knowledge, identifying information technology issues facing in conservation and propagation of IM, exploring traditional medical generations and genealogies in Sri Lanka, studying the measures to be taken by the government for the conservation and propagation of Sri Lankan indigenous medical knowledge and examining its current strategies for conservation and propagation. In this study, the selected key IM generations using the latest information technology initiatives will be surveyed and focus will be given for the latest trends in propagation for indigenous medical knowledge and methods for conservation of indigenous medicine. This method used a survey method based on the qualitative research which is a peer reviewed study on the use of ICT strategies for the conservation and propagation of indigenous medicine. Generations of doctors in Sri Lanka in the subject will be used as the sample. Data will be collected using snowball sampling, comprised of 10 each. Data collection is done through interviews and observation. Data are collected through interviews under the chief medical practioners.Item Continuous Professional Development Programs Conducted by the Public Libraries in Sri Lanka: a Study based on Selected Public libraries in Western and Uva Provinces(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Senarathna, K.I.D.This paper is an attempt to study the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Programs in public libraries in Sri Lanka. Continuous Professional Development the means by which members of respective profession develop, maintain, improve, and broaden their knowledge and skills and develop the personal qualities required to uplift their professional development. The principal purpose of the study is to examine the status of participation of public librarians for the Continuous Professional Development Programs in Sri Lanka. The other objectives are to explore what is the level of participation of public librarians in CPD, to identify the institutions offering CPD programs, to identify what are the most productive and effective CPD programs which are very fitting to public libraries and librarians and to explore the basic benefits of CPD and to investigate its performances. Method of the study is the survey research. The research studied under selected Municipal councils, Urban Councils including Pradeshiya Sabha, in Western and Uva provinces and the libraries selected in the grades 1st, 2nd, and 3rd as based on the criteria laid down by the National Library and Documentation Services Board, Sri Lanka. Primary data will be collected through site visit, discussion followed by the observation both participatory and non-participatory. Further data would be collected using two separate questionnaires focusing the librarians and resource persons and the concerned institutions. For collecting the secondary data, web site and data and statistical reports of the Ministry of Local Government and provincial council are used. The research information will be presented on what is the CPD, why is it needed, how public librarians would participate for the CPD Programs. The attentions will be given who will support for the public librarians in the process, what are new CPD programs to be introduced, what are new tendencies, problems, and challenges of these CPD programs. Accordingly, based on the survey data findings and conclusions will be drawn for the future betterment of the relevant filed and the CPD.Item Issues Faced by the Undergraduates when Using University Libraries in Sri Lanka: a Study based on Kelaniya, Jayewardenepura, and Colombo Universities(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Senani, R. A.Information in today’s society occupies an important place. Information has become one of the basic needs of everybody in the society. In such a society, information takes the lead in every spheres. A large amount of information flow and outdate anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds. Libraries and information centres are the places where collection, organization and the dissemination of such information. The University is in the forefront of various studies, education, research, innovation and generation of new methods and tools. Accordingly, the Sri Lankan University system occupies a special place. The library occupies an important place in the university education system. Library is the heart of university education. It has become a modern accepted theory that the university library is the heart of any university. Education, Research, Knowledge, Preservation and Publication are the primary functions of a university. The principal objective of this study is to identify the problems and issues faced by the undergraduate readers when using university libraries. The survey method is used as the study method. The study population is the undergraduates studying in universities in Sri Lanka 150 undergraduates in three universities are selected as the sample among all universities. Three university libraries are University of Kelaniya, Jayewardenepura and Colombo. It is expected that the sample will be selected to represent the undergraduates in Art Faculties. About 50 undergraduates are selected from one university. A systematic questionnaire will be prepared in relation to the objectives of the study and primary data will be collected. The secondary data will be collected through written sources, such as research reports, journals, statistical records an online sources. It is intended to analyse primary data using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Various statistical methods are intended to use for better visualization of the results and the findings.Item An Analysis on the Distribution of Legal Deposit Copy under the Legal Deposit Law in Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Sanjeewani, M.D.S.M.In each and every country there is a legal deposit law and there is a national collection based on national information and national bibliographic control policies and guidelines. When considering the legal deposit of laws and tradition of Sri Lanka, the National Printers and Publishers Ordinance of 1885 No 1 specifies that all publishers should be registered under law in the National Archives Office in Sri Lanka. According to this law a publisher or the printer should submit five copies of each published book or Newspaper to the Department of National Archives (DNA) and the DNA will distribute these books or items among preservation or legal deposit libraries in Sri Lanka. The principal objective of the study is to explore what is legal deposit law of Sri Lanka and the process of distribution of deposit copies received under legal deposit law in Sri Lanka among respective libraries, to examine the norms and principles of selecting libraries which maintain and deposit the legal deposits, to investigate the importance of collecting the legal deposit and the need of collecting legal deposit, and to examine issues and problems of legal deposits, to investigate the weaknesses of Sri Lankan legal deposit law and to identify new trends in legal deposits and the law. For this study survey method is used. As the sample 25 persons among the population of experts of library and information science, librarians, educationalist and researchers are selected. For the primary data collection the above mentioned a structured questionnaire will be administered among the above sample. It is essential to conduct an interview among the experts. After that categorizing and refinement of data types, the summarizing, gaining percentages and data analysing are done. The results will be presented using tables, graphs and diagram.Item Role and the Contribution of Advisory Committee of Public Libraries in Sri Lanka: a Study based on Selected Public Libraries in Matara District(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Sandamali, W.M.A.Public libraries make a significant contribution for producing intelligent citizens who are enriched by knowledge. The public library is the only institution which provides free services to all sections of the society irrespective of age, religion and religion. In order to preserve its democratic quality, a public library needs to be properly organized. The various committees of a library have different roles and responsibilities to play. Advisory committee or Library Committee which have a strong impact on the subject and some library committees have a good reputation and make substantial contribution to the society. The Library Advisory committee has a tremendous contribution to help libraries and to achieve people’s aspiration with a clear direction for achieving their goals. The purpose of this consultative committee is to study the impact of library development on public library work. The research method used for this study is the survey method. Among all public libraries in Matara district, six public libraries which comprised of library advisor committees use as the sample. The primary data will be collected using questionnaires and interviews. Analysed data will be presented using tables, charts and diagrams with due interpretations.Item Attitudes of International Students on the Use of University Libraries: a Case Study based on University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Judith, N.This paper aims at investigating international undergraduate students’ library use and their attitudes and perceptions towards the library at the University of Kelaniya. These students' library use as well as their perception are explored since the number of foreign students in the university is increasing therefore librarians ought to improve their commitment to enhance library services for this special community of users. Besides, this paper explore the number of students who do and do not use the university library both physical and online access and services. Study population is total international students at University of Kelaniya and a sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling formula. Study applies survey research design. Primary data will be collected using structured questionnaire, observation and using interview technique. It determines how to increase the number of the users, identifies how the library has benefited those students that use it since academic libraries have a great impact on students education in the university. This paper examines the situation of the current library settings which is to be improved by the librarians in a proper manner and it is viable to improve a cordial dialog and relationship between the library staff and the international students. Customer care, library marketing and public relations are some of the key areas which should be developed among the library staff.Item Methods Used by Estate Communities in Procuring Information: a Study based on Haliela Divisional Secretariat Division in Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Madushika, G.D.N.Sri Lanka is still a developing country and as a whole there are places where information services and its dissemination is very poorly taken place. One such area is the estate sector in the up country region. Not only information services, the other economic, social, political and cultural benefits and incentives are lacking to those who are living in the up country estate premises. During the British period, Indian workers were brought for the tea the plantation purposes. Estate labor force accounts for 6% of Sri Lanka's population. Although the estate sectors development rate in Sri Lanka is low, the contribution of estate people to the gross domestic product of Sri Lanka is significant. The success of using the right methods for obtaining information in day-to-day life was not significantly as expected due to the deficiency of social, economic, cultural, political, and educational and information availability for the estate people in Sri Lanka. The problem of the study focuses on identifying the methods used for the acquisition of information of estate people with the types of information they needed. The other objectives of the research is to assure what methods using for getting their information, to examine these methods are used correctly. The study applies survey research. Both the primary and secondary data are used for the above research and the primary data is collected through interviews and questionnaires. The cluster sampling method is used collecting the data. 100 families in the up country estate sector will be used as the study sample. Hundreds of families belonging to three Grama Seva Divisions of the Haliela Divisional Secretariat Division in Badulla District will be selected for study in the ratio of 1: 2: 7. This research is very important because the quality of the media and methods used in the acquisition of information will undoubtedly help for the betterment of this marginalized communities in the estate sector. The results will be beneficial for this socially excluded people to divert for the social inclusion.Item Usage of Bibliographic Information in the Online Public Access Catalogue: University of Kelaniya and Sri Jayawardenapura University Library(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Madhumali, P.B.I.A catalogue is a list of all the library materials that are contained in a library or group of libraries for the use of getting information related to the same materials. It is a rapidly developing and changing concept and also a tool with the knowledge and real-time technology of human society. As a result of computing development, the Online Public Access Catalogue was created. OPAC is an online repository of bibliographic data and information which any person can access in online. It is important that the catalogue is prepared in such a way that the reader can check from any location, while the library's catalog can be explored online. This research focusses the use of bibliographic information in the online public access catalogue. The objectives of this research are to identify the current status of OPAC bibliographic information, to study the optical bibliographic standards, to examine the OPAC’s bibliographic information, to identify the problems that exist in OPAC and to explore solutions for answering such problems and issues. This research is carried out through quantitative research approach. The OPACs of both University of Kelaniya and the Sri Jayewardenepura University Library have been selected as a sample based on a purposive sample among 15 universities in Sri Lanka. Interviews, questionnaires and observation techniques are used to collect primary data. The secondary data will be collected using academic journals, dissertations, databases and selected web pages. It is expected to analyze data obtained from the University of Kelaniya and Sri Jayewardenepura University Libraries.Item Use of Academic Social Networking Sites in Research and Research Management Purposes: a Study based on the Academic Staff of the University of Kelaniya(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Kumari, V.U.M.D.Due to the rapid growth of knowledge the information tends to grow exponentially in the world. There has been a tremendous expansion of knowledge in all fields such as political, economic, cultural, education and research and so on. As a result the increasing amount of the information new areas of subject domain are also multiplying at a larger scales. Information is so important in almost every field of human performance. Researchers and scholars from various disciplines carry out various research in different fields. Research has even been done in the past as well as continued in the future too. Researches are done by different kinds of people which include the academic staff of universities. It is very important to use research management tools, techniques and methodologies by the research communities especially by the academic staff of universities. There are educational, research and social networks sites in the web which can be applied for research management purposes. Some examples are Google scholar, Research Gate, Academia including LinkedIn. The list further includes Zotero, RefWorks, EndNote, Mendeley, Readcube, and Qiqqa and so on. Academic staff can use these networks and sites to manage their research. During their research process, the academic staff can include their research information in these networks and sites. Objective of the study is to study the use of those networks and sites by the academic staff for their research management purposes. The sample would be selected from the academic staff of faculties of Social Sciences, Humanities, Science, Commerce and Management including Computing and IT being 100 staff members of university of Kelaniya. Primary data collection will be done using the interviews, questionnaires, observations will be conducted. For collecting secondary data, dissertations, articles, internet data bases, web pages used. . It will be able to explore the present situation of staff using such networks and sites, the user behavior, staff attitudes and the issues and problems they face.
