    Coping with Psychological Issues Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic Times: Perspectives of Undergraduates of Non-State Universities

    The COVID-19 pandemic caused much upheaval to people's lifestyles worldwide/globally. Even university undergraduates had to switch from conventional physical classrooms to online learning. According to several studies, various issues pertaining to online learning have intensified the stress levels of undergraduates. This study adopted a qualitative approach. Primary data were gathered through structured interviews, from which coping mechanisms used by the students were identified based on a thematic analysis performed through NVIVO. Coping mechanisms played a critical role in ensuring these undergraduates' ability to handle their psychological issues and continue their academic work. The population included non-state undergraduates in Sri Lanka in the academic year 2020 and the sample size was 30. Findings revealed online learning, high workload, and IT infrastructure issues as key challenges undergraduates face during the pandemic. Among these, two main themes were identified as individual activities and group activities regarding coping mechanisms adopted by undergraduates to alleviate stress. This study recommends/highlights the importance of undergraduates engaging in such activities that help sustain their psychological status. Similarly, the study emphasized the role of universities and higher education institutes in facilitating and promoting such activities among their student population.

    Impact of Smartphone Addiction on Academic Performance of Undergraduates in Sri Lanka: Mediating effect of Technology Driven Multitasking

    This study aimed to examine university undergraduate’s level of Smartphone Addiction (SA) and to investigate the impact of SA on their Academic Performance (AP) with the mediating effect of Technology-Driven Multitasking behaviour (TDMT). The study employed a cross-sectional survey design, with data gathered from 315 university students. The scope is limited to management undergraduates in Sri Lanka. Descriptive and inferential analysis was used while regression analysis was applied to test hypotheses. Further, the Sobel test is used to test the mediate effect in the relationship between Independent Variable (IV) and Dependent Variable (DV. The study put forth that university students were highly addicted to the use of smartphones. SA negatively impacts AP while TDMT also negatively impacts DV. Further, TDMT mediates the relationship between IV and DV. This study suggests that the students should reduce the intense use of smartphones for smoothly doing their academic activities.

    EXPLORING THE EFFECT OF TECHNOSTRESS ON CYBER LOAFING, MEDIATING EFFECT OF SELF CONTROL DEFICIENCY

    Technology plays a vital role in acquiring the attention of society. While seeking attention requires competence, a more skillful workforce is required. That’s where technology comes into play. This possesses pros as well as cons. This research points outs the drawback of technologies. Therefore, this study examines the impact of technostress on cyberloafing among undergraduates in Sri Lanka, with self-control deficiency as a mediating factor. Technostress, caused by excessive dependence on digital technologies, can negatively affect students' focus and academic performance. A quantitative, cross-sectional research design was adopted, and data was collected from 437 undergraduates using a structured questionnaire. The sample was selected through simple random sampling, and data analysis was conducted using correlation and regression analyses in SPSS inserting the sample size of 437. The Sobel test was applied to assess the mediating effect of self-control deficiency. The findings reveal a significant positive relationship between technostress and cyberloafing. The Correlation between Technostress and Cyber Loafing was 0.333 which is statistically significant (0.001) and as per the regression analysis, the R square was 0.11 where the significance value was 0.001, indicating that students experiencing higher levels of technostress are more likely to engage in non-academic online activities. Additionally, Sobel Test was conducted, where the P value was 0.116 which is statistically significant where self-control deficiency was found to be significantly mediating this relationship, suggesting that technostress weakens students’ ability to regulate their online behaviors, leading to increased cyberloafing. The study concludes that managing technostress is essential in reducing cyberloafing among undergraduates. It recommends that universities implement digital well-being programs, self-regulation training, and awareness campaigns to help students manage technostress effectively. Educators should integrate structured digital learning environments and promote time management strategies to reduce the negative impact of excessive technology use. By addressing technostress and enhancing self-control mechanisms, educational institutions can foster a more focused and productive academic environment, ultimately improving students' performance and well-being.

    PARENTING STYLES DURING ADOLESCENCE AND THEIR IMPACT ON UNDERGRADUATES’ SELF-ESTEEM

    This study is motivated by the need to understand how different parenting styles during adolescence influence self-esteem in undergraduate students, and this study explores the impact of parenting styles during adolescence on the self-esteem of undergraduates. Using a quantitative survey approach, the data were collected from undergraduate students from the Faculty of Management of the University of Kelaniya. The primary focus is on investigating how parenting styles during adolescence impact on the self-esteem of undergraduates. The research acknowledges that the self-esteem of undergraduates may differ depending on the parenting styles they have experienced during their adolescence. A comprehensive literature review leads to the foundation of the research, integrating theories and verifiable findings regarding the variables. The conceptual framework shows the interaction between self-esteem and parenting styles. Using a quantitative research approach, the study uses surveys and SPSS analysis to collect and interpret data. By exploring the relationship among these variables, this research expects to provide a deep comprehension of how these parenting styles influence the self-esteem levels of undergraduates.

    FACTORS IMPACT ON ENTREPRENEURIAL INTENTION AMONG UNDERGRADUATES SPECIALIZED IN BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

    The purpose of this research is to identify factors impact on entrepreneurial intention among undergraduates specialized in business management field which in turn would also educate stakeholders and educational policy-makers. This research is deductive (theory–testing) research. This research was conducted using a survey research strategy and quantitative research method. State university students were chosen as the population of the study. The sample size was 384, data collection was done through a self-administered questionnaire and Random sampling technique. A Google form was created and distributed to collect data. The number of undergraduates who responded was 384 among 9,780 students. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS), version 23.0 was used as a tool for data analysis and both descriptive and inferential statistics, namely correlation and regression were used to analyze data. The findings indicate that the most important influences on entrepreneurial intentions are attitudes and perceived behavioral control, while subjective norms have only mild effects. A positive mindset for entrepreneurship and the acquisition of practical skills in undergraduates are thus illustrated by the findings.

    The Factors Influencing the Undergraduates’ Digital Entrepreneurship Intention: With reference to Undergraduates of the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies of the University of Kelaniya

    This study explores the key factors influencing undergraduates' intention to start a digital business, with special attention to undergraduates at the Faculty of Commerce & Management Studies of the University of Kelaniya. Understanding what inspires students to pursue digital entrepreneurship is essential in the quickly changing digital economy. The study investigates how e-platform benefits, individual characteristics, social influences, entrepreneurial education, and academic programs influence students' ambitions for digital businesses. Three hundred thirty-nine undergraduate students were given an online survey to complete to gather data using a quantitative research methodology. Using SPSS, multiple regression analysis was used to examine the correlations between the variables. The results suggest that while e-platform advantages have no discernible impact, undergraduates' ambitions to launch digital enterprises are highly influenced by entrepreneurship courses, individual characteristics, social factors, and the university study process. The study highlights the need for university programs in entrepreneurial education to be improved to better prepare students for digital entrepreneurship.

    The Effect of Facebook Usage Intensity and the Personality Type of Individuals on Academic Performance: A Study among Final Year Undergraduates of Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya

    During last couple of years, it had been quite evident that the academic performance of undergraduates are inconsistent over time and gender bias in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies of University of Kelaniya. With the wide usage of internet and related services across the globe, the life style of people started to change. The global internet users have been passed 4 billion and among those 3 billion people around use social media in each month by using the mobile devices. The social media made major effect to the society and effect to the students’ academic performance in all the countries across the world. The purpose of this study is to examine whether Facebook usage intensity and the personality type impact on the university undergraduates’ academic performance. The primary data were collected from a sample of 142 university final year undergraduates via a validated standard survey instrument. The statistical data analysis techniques used for impact testing were chi-square and Nagelkarke R- square of logistic regression. The study brings up results showing that there is a significant impact on Facebook usage intensity and undergraduates’ academic performance relationship. Moreover, it has been observed, that personality type does not moderate the relationship between Facebook usage intensity and academic performance

    Factors Influencing Career Choice of Management Undergraduates of Western Province, Sri Lanka

    The study sought to investigate factors that influence the choice of career among management undergraduates in Western Province of Sri Lanka. The investigation serves as a mind map for the undergraduates to understand their own factors influence on their career choice while it encourage government to understand the improving areas to conduct career guidance and counselling programs. Employers are beneficial through understanding behavior and objectives of candidates so that they can attract most appropriate individuals. A survey design which is quantitative in nature was used in this empirical study. A standard questionnaire was used in collecting data from the participants. One hundred and eighty one undergraduates participated in the study. The Microsoft Excel – 2010 used to calculate the percentages that were used to analyze the data. The study revealed that extrinsic factors, intrinsic factors and interpersonal factors influence on undergraduates’ choice of careers. This study recommend to conduct career guidance and counselling session on undergraduates in order guide them for a best career choice

    The Impact of the Internship Experience of Undergraduates on their University to Work Success

    The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of the internship experience of undergraduates on university to work success. In this study, the researcher used a standard questionnaire regarding the internship experience and the university to work success to collect primary data from the management graduates that passed out from the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies of the University of Kelaniya in 2017. Gathered data was analyzed using correlation and regression analysis and research findings indicated that there is a moderate positive relationship and significant positive impact between Internship experience of the undergraduates and university to work success. Therefore, undergraduates should more focus on their internships to develop their soft skills and the higher education institutions need to focus their practical training programs as well. Because this internship experience is most important to an undergraduate to achieve a better career success. Further, this study would be more helpful to initiate a larger scale study on the internship experience on the career success

    Examining the Role of Multitasking on Academic Performance of University Undergraduates.

    Nowadays, majority of the youth use more than one information and communication technologies such as smart phones, tablets and laptops. These devices allow them to do many activities simultaneously such as talk on the phone while check the Facebook account and listen to music while studying, or surfing internet with more than one site on the web. Thus, it is important to investigate whether this multitasking behavior of the undergraduates will effect on their academic performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the university students’ multitasking behavior and to determine the impacts of this multitasking on their university Grade Point Average (GPA). The population of this study was 3rd and 4th year undergraduates of the Department of Commerce and Financial Management of University of Kelaniya. A random sample of 100 is taken. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire. A pilot study with 30 students has done to check the reliability of the questionnaire. The data analysis showed that there is a significant negative impact of ICT Usage and Internet skills on GPA. Also, there is a significant negative impact of Multitasking behavior on GPA. Further, the multitasking is a mediating factor between Internet skills, ICT usage and GPA of the undergraduates. The findings of the study revealed that, concentrating too many activities at one time leads to decrease the academic performance of the undergraduates.
