    Impact of Big Five Personality Factors on Career Success: A Study Based on Staff-level Employees in A Leading Apparel Firm in Sri Lanka

    Success and failure of any organization mostly depend on the people and their behaviors. Most of the employees are more concerned about their career success in the apparel sector. Past researchers explained that career success two different viewed such as objectively (extrinsic) and subjectively (intrinsic). The present study attempted to investigate the impact of big five personality factors on employee’s career success, and it limits its investigation into a selected apparel firm in Srilanka. A questionnaire survey was conducted to gather data from staff-level employees of a leading apparel firm in Sri Lanka. There were 120 responses were obtained. The correlation and regression analysis were used in analyzing data. The results of the study indicated that all big five factors were a significant relationship with career success. Further, all big five factors, except neuroticism, have a positive impact on career success. Neuroticism has a significant negative impact on career success. Hence, this study provides better understandings and the results for the big five personality factors that affect an employee’s career success in a leading apparel firm in Sri Lanka.

    The Impact of the Internship Experience of Undergraduates on their University to Work Success

    The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of the internship experience of undergraduates on university to work success. In this study, the researcher used a standard questionnaire regarding the internship experience and the university to work success to collect primary data from the management graduates that passed out from the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies of the University of Kelaniya in 2017. Gathered data was analyzed using correlation and regression analysis and research findings indicated that there is a moderate positive relationship and significant positive impact between Internship experience of the undergraduates and university to work success. Therefore, undergraduates should more focus on their internships to develop their soft skills and the higher education institutions need to focus their practical training programs as well. Because this internship experience is most important to an undergraduate to achieve a better career success. Further, this study would be more helpful to initiate a larger scale study on the internship experience on the career success

    The Nexus between Educational Attainment and Career Success: A Review

    Depending on the level of success an individual is seeking to achieve, the level of education may be relative, but the bottom line is, an education of some sort is often paramount to future success in both career and life. The impact of educational attainment on career success has been a burning topic in the world of business. Many academics and professionals have narrated on this relationship and among them different facets could be found. Accordingly this study is a thorough literature review of the relationship of educational attainment and career success which some have identified a strong positive relationship whereas the others have not seen a greater impact among the two variables but stressed on other factors affecting career success. This controversy is being reviewed and shows how an individual makes educational decisions. The author has introduced a new model on the relationship for further developments by the future researchers at the end of the study. This model depicts that education solely does not contribute to career success, but the family background, humanitarian and social skills, and work expertise do have a great impact together.

    Relationship between Educational Attainment and Career Success of Front Line Middle Management of MAS Linea Aqua

    Depending on the level of success an individual is seeking to achieve, the level of education may be relative, but the bottom line is that an education of some sort is often paramount to future success in both career and life. In the global aspect, Sri Lankan aspect, and organizational aspect there could be seen many mismatches between education and career. Research on the link between higher education and world of work is still under representative and the prevailing perception and views regarding this connection are controversial in various aspects, which have paved the way to carry on with this particular study. Accordingly with the intention of discovering whether there is a significant relationship between the educational attainment and the success of an individual’s career this study has been carried out in one of the top companies in the apparel industry namely, MAS Linea Aqua (Pvt) Ltd, Giridara, Kapugoda. The sample of the study is 60 (55% of the population) among the population of 110 executive and senior executive frontline employees. Questionnaires, an interview (primary) and database review (secondary) have been used as the tools to collect data. In finding the relationship a mixed approach (quantitative and qualitative) was applied. Quantitative analytical tools have been used to prove with statistical justification including descriptive statistics, frequencies for demographic analysis, and tools such as independent sample t-test and ANOVA for relationship analysis. A concept ledger and thematic analysis were used to justify the relationship through qualitative aspect with the interview data which added more value. As per the outcome of the research the conclusion is that there is no significant relationship between educational attainment and career success of frontline middle management of MAS Linea Aqua. The researchers have identified implications and recommendation which the company can adopt to utilize the resources effectively and efficiently to gain benefit for both the organization and the individual. The outcome of this study will contribute to the policy level, practitioners and for the improvement of knowledge on this aspect and for the society at large for the betterment.

    The Effect of Extracurricular Activities on Career Outcomes of HR Professionals

    Although much attention has already been devoted to document the benefits of extra-curricular activities in general; from the developmental and social perspective, very little focus has been given to a complete an academic study of the effect of Extra Curricular Activities (ECA) on HR professional’s career success. Hence, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of engagement of extra-curricular activities on career success of HR professionals. In order to achieve the stated objective, an exploratory study was conducted among 50 HR professionals in well recognized companies in Sri Lanka. Structured questionnaire was used to collect data. This study examine the effect of ECAs on career success building on four dimensions; fostering academic outcomes; improving skill set; psychological development and improving access to social capital with the engagement level of ECAs as suggested Keenan (2012). The results revealed that there is a significant positive moderate relationship between ECAs engagement level and HR professional’s career success. When results were analyzed individually on ECAs engagement with career success indicators; Fostering academic outcomes, skill acquisition and psychological development that results revealed significant positive relationships. Only one dimension (access to social capital) was found to be insignificant. The implications of these findings are useful to all stakeholders of HRM especially current and potential job seekers, organizations, institutions which offer HRM professional courses, and in the broader sense HRM workforce developers.
