    Impact of COVID-19 on Employee Well-being in Apparel Industry in Sri Lanka

    Sri Lanka is one of the most vulnerable developing countries suffering from the emergence of novel COVID-19 pandemic. Along these lines, the Sri Lankan apparel sector was mainly impacted. Examining the impact of epidemics on the well-being of employees who work in the Sri Lankan apparel industry is a notable research direction as per the empirical evidence. Thus, the present study aimed to examine the attributes of perceived pandemic concerns in terms of physical, psychological, financial, and concerns regarding social gaze while investigating the well-being of employees working in the apparel sector during COVID-19. A total of 100 apparel sector employees from 10 different companies in Sri Lanka was selected as respondents using simple random sampling technique. A Google-form based questionnaire was developed for the data collection. Data analysis was conducted applying structural equation modelling using SMART PLS software. The results revealed that employees’ physical, psychological, financial, and concerns regarding social gaze, have a significant influence on their work stress during COVID-19 pandemic. Furthermore, work stress during pandemic significantly influences employee well-being in the Sri Lankan apparel industry. Moreover, significant indirect influences were identified between physical, psychological, and financial concerns and employee well-being via work stress. The present study provides valuable insights to the human resource officials attached to the apparel industry to mitigate possible work stress of employees to ensure higher employee well-being during pandemic situations.

    The Impact of Job Tension on Job Satisfaction: A Study on Executive Level Employees of the Apparel Industry in Anuradhapura District of Sri Lanka

    Apparel industry in Sri Lanka has become major contributor to Sri Lanka’s economic development. Due to supply of low cost creative labour and organizational friendly government policies, many international apparel brands and apparel firms are outsourcing their manufacturing functions to Asian countries. Of those, Sri Lanka is a leading country where most apparel sector giants are interested to invest in. Further, in Sri Lankan context apparel sector is highly competitive as quite a number of big giants such as MAS Holdings, Brandix Apparel Lanka Ltd, Hela Clothing (Pvt) Ltd are operating in the market. Due to this high competitiveness in the industry, greater struggle is visible to attract and retain key talent. However, retaining talent has become difficult due to the job tension associated with high competitiveness. In the current study, the researchers attempt to investigate in depth the impact of job tension on job satisfaction of the executive level employees of the Apparel Industry, with special reference to Anuradhapura District. The executive level employees in three leading garment manufacturing organizations in Sri Lanka were investigated through a sample of 100 employees. Simple random sampling method was used to select the representative sample. A self-administrated structured questionnaire was used to collect data. The correlation analysis and regression analysis were used to test the research hypotheses. The study confirmed that job tension is significantly correlated with employee job satisfaction. The findings of the study also indicated that there is a strong negative relationship between job tension and job satisfaction of executive level employees. This study directly provides a major theoretical contribution filling the gaps of former studies which were done on apparel sector. The findings and the recommendations of the current research directly addresses lot of practical issues related to job tension and job satisfaction faced by the apparel firms.

    Effects of quality of work-life on turnover intention: evidence from Sewing Machine Operators in Sri Lankan apparel industry

    High employee turnover among sewing machine operators (SMOs) is one of the critical problem facing apparel industry in Sri Lanka as it create high cost to the organizations. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Quality of Work Life (QWL) on turnover intention among the sewing machine operators in apparel industry in Sri Lanka. This study covered sewing machine operators in Sri Lanka with the sample size of 350 and data were collected through a structured questionnaire. Findings revealed that the majority of the respondents were females and 91% of the respondents were young. The results also illustrated that there is a relationship between QWL and turnover intention and the study further indicated that most of the respondent were dissatisfied with their work life and showed their willingness to leave. According to the results of Pearson’s Correlation analysis, it was found that QWL were negatively and significantly correlated with turnover intention of SMOs. The study further indicated that there is a strong negative relationship between these two variables. Regression analysis shows that 56% of the turnover intention among SMO’s was explained by QWL. This study concluded that satisfied employees will positively contribute to the organizational goals and assured that quality of work life will not only attract young and new talent but also retain the existing talent.

    Adaption of Information Technology Systems on Success of Supply Chain Management in Apparel Industry of Sri Lanka

    The research topic “Adaption of Information Technology Systems on success of Supply Chain Management in Apparel Industry of Sri Lanka” discussed in this research paper. This study aims to identify the degree of application of information technology in supply chain management in the apparel industry. Also the study will cover the problems encountered in implementations of supply chain management and finding out the requirements for successful IT implementations in Supply chain management. As such the problem centered in this study was how far information technology is used by the appeal industry in case of its supply chain management. Also the notable research gap identified by the researcher was what factors have affected implementation of Information Technology systems and to what extent the apparel industry uses IT systems in its Supply Chain Management. IT was filled by the research. The key objective researcher attempted to achieve was to examine practice of IT in supply chain management. It was followed by the three specific objectives. Consistent with the objectives of the research, four research questions were raised and mainly such as what is the degree of applying IT solutions in Supply Chain Management followed by two other questions were raised. Based on the variables represented in the conceptual framework, five hypotheses were formulated. Therefore empirical evidence was analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. Mainly deductive approach was used as the research approach. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used in presenting and analyzing the data. Inferential statics such as regression and correlations analysis were used to determine relationship between relevant variables. There are ten number of findings made. The degree of applying IT solutions in supply chain management is somewhat average in the Sri Lankan apparel sector. The adaption of IT systems needs to get further competitive advantage and other benefits in the supply chain management. Finally eleven recommendations were made and twenty suggestions for future researchers pointed out.
