M. D. Y.This paper aims to develop a model on job burnout with the work social support and employee engagement. The model argues a mediating of employee engagement in explaining the influence of work social support on job burnout. Further, it also suggest the importance of identification of job burnout not only in the service jobs but also in out of service sector. The paper proposes the relationships between perceived supervisor and coworker support with burnout, and the mediating effect of employee engagement on the direct relationships, by getting the support from conservation of resource theory and job-demand resource theory.Item A Critique on the Role of Social Media; Facebook(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2015) Padmasiri, M. K. D.; Kawshalya, M. D. P.This literature review reviews various roles of Facebook (FB) are playing in today's globalized world. According to literature, Facebook plays roles in various fields such as, marketing, online games, education, teaching, romantic relationship management, managing relationship among friends, and stakeholder engagement. The current study limits its investigation in to selected roles of Facebook such as academic teaching, marketing and romantic relationship management. One finding of the stated that using blogging tools to further develop relationships with undergraduate and graduate students and engage them in meaningful discussions outside of class time. According to another studies Facebook plays a major role in romantic relationship management which creates emotional outcomes as relationship satisfaction and trait jealousy. Further literature argues that network is important in changing the way of business talk with customer and indicates that Facebook plays a role as a communication channel in marketing at business level. Review discussed that FB plays important roles such as, FB in academic teaching, FB in marketing, and FB in romantic relationship. Based on above discussion study can conclude that Facebook plays an important role in various fields.Item A Review of Employee Counselling(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2014) Padmasiri, M. K. D.; Jayathilake, L. V. K.Employee counselling is a Human Resource Management (HRM) practice, which uses to maintain employees’ wellbeing. The objective of the present study is identify counselling techniques which can be applied in employee counselling. The literature shows that in employee counselling counselor can apply different counselling techniques including Cognitive Therapy (CT), Behavioral Therapy (BT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), existential-humanistic therapy and psychoanalysis. According to the literature, for each therapy there are different therapeutic techniques can be used. So, in Behavioral Therapy, Systematic Desensitization, Exposure Therapies, Aversion Therapy, and Biofeedback can be used. Moreover, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) and Reinforcement techniques can be applied as CBT techniques whilst logo therapy and gestalt therapy are using as existential-humanistic therapy techniques. Finally, in Psychoanalysis Therapy Anamnesis, Analysis / Interpretation of Dreams and Analysis / Interpretation of Symbols can be applied in employee counselling.Item Aligning organizational cultures with national culture: an overview(University of Kelaniya, 2006) Senaratne, C.Item Analysis of Stress on Employees’ Productivity: A Study based on Air Force Officers in Sri Lanka(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2014) de Silva, R.D.; Thilakasiri, K.K.Job stress is became one of the main challenges faced by many organisations. It is usually occurs when employees cannot cope with pressure or tension of assigned task. It can be considered as one of the factors which influence the work behavior of employees. Work behavior of an employee can be affected due to stress either in positive or negative way. Negative impact of employees’ work behavior due to stress might contribute to lower employees’ productivity ultimately affecting organization performance. According to AIS (the American Institute of Stress) report, $ 300 billion spend annually due to accident, absenteeism, turnover, medical, legal, insurance costs and workers’ compensation as a result of job stress. The main aim of this study is to identify most significance stressor and also to analyses its effect on employees’ productivity. Descriptive survey was adopted as the research design of the study. This study has been conducted based on Sri Lanka Air Force with reference to three bases. The primary data were collected through a questionnaire survey from 67 Air Force officers. The results of the study indicate that over workload (.332**), excessive responsibility (.495**), poor relationship (.518**), meet deadline (.494**), and harassment (.558**) are statically significant factors in predicting the level of stress in Air Force officers. Educational level and civil status are most significant demographic factors affecting the level of stress. Finding of the study shows that there is a low positive relationship between stress and productivity.Item Are Women Entrepreneurs More Vulnerable Than Their Male Counterparts? – A Content Analysis(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2013) Kodisinghe, K.A.M.S.; Semasinghe, D.M.The objective of this study is to examine the problems faced by women entrepreneurs. Data for the study was mainly based on secondary data and some observations. The basic research method selected for the study was content analysis. For the identification of these issues we have reviewed various research articles and reports published by major journals. Findings of this study reveal that access to finance, social and cultural constrains, lack of specialized education background and advances in technology and role problems are the major problems faced by women entrepreneurs. We recommend that more organizations and networks should be established for the development of women entrepreneurs and to minimise the problems faced by them.Item Assessing Online Teaching Experience during the Covid-19 Pandemic: With Special Reference to the Lecturers Specialized in Management, Sri Lanka(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2021) Rathnakara, K. A. K. S.The entire world was terrifically affected by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020/21 at different levels. However, almost all the industries including tourism, manufacturing, apparel, education and banking, and finance were utterly affected by this situation. The education sector can be recognized as one of the key sectors deleteriously affected by the pandemic as it created a lot of complications in all the spheres of educational operations including delivering lectures, holding examinations, and conducting assignments. Most of the countries introduced the working from the home concept which was also applied to the education sector as well. Hence; the main objective of this research was to assess the online teaching experience of the Management faculty lecturers in Sri Lanka. This study further explores the difficulties and benefits of online teaching experienced by the lecturers, the level of satisfaction and acceptance of online teaching for future purposes. The findings suggest that lecturers were provided different levels of technical support from their relevant institutes and used different combinations of tools for online teaching. The study further revealed that the main advantage was flexible hours, while; lack of student engagement; lack of face-to-face interactions, internet connection, and technical problems were the most common difficulties. Furthermore, it was found that lecturers were partially satisfied with online education but showed higher acceptance of online education in the future.Item Assessing the Implementation of Total Quality Management in Education Administration Institutions in Central Province, Sri Lanka(2014) Abeykoon, M.W.M.; de Alwis, C.The purpose of this study was to assess the implementation of TQM aspects among education administration institutions in the central province, Sri Lanka. This study focused on identifying the level of Hard TQM implementation and Soft TQM implementation among selected education administration institutions. A five point Likert scale questionnaire was used as the key instrument of data collection. The data were obtained from a survey of 41 administrators in education administration institutions in central province. The findings suggest that the level of hard TQM implementation is at a high level and the level of soft TQM implementation is at a moderate level. Further the study reports that the level of hard TQM implementation is higher than the level of soft TQM implementation. Among the studied Hard TQM techniques Quality Circles is reported as the most adopted technique. Customer / Citizen Satisfaction and Top Management Commitment and Support are the top principles adopted among the studied Soft TQM practices. In addition to that, report revealed that there is no significance difference in between districts in central province when implementing hard TQM and soft TQM.Item Association between Emotional Labour and Psychological Well-Being: With Special Reference to Doctors Working at COVID - 19 Treatment Units in Gampaha District, Sri Lanka(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2022) Vindya, I. W. S.; Rathnakara, K. A. K. S.In the context of Sri Lanka, the significance of the health industry to the country's GDP is highlighted. Because the country's social health protection and quality health care have an impact on economic growth and development. As a result, the health sector is one of the most important industries in Sri Lanka. This study aimed to examine the effects of emotional labour on the psychological health of outstanding reference doctors employed by Covid 19 treatment facilities in the Gampaha District Sri Lanka . The independent variable was emotional labour, and the dependent variable was psychological well-being. Doctors employed by Covid 19 treatment facilities in the Gampaha district were chosen as the population and simple random sampling method was utilized to select the sample. Questionnaires were used to gather information from the 97 doctors that made up the sample. The doctors' response rate was 100 percent. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21.0 was used to analyze the data. For univariate analysis, the mean score and standard deviation for each variable were analysed, and the correlation coefficient was employed for bivariate analysis. The impact of the independent varible on the dependent variable was examined using multiple regression. Doctors' emotional labour and psychological health have changed depending on their gender, level of education, experience, employment history, and marital status. The study’s findings indicates that emotional labour has an impact on psychological well-being reference to the surface acting and psychological well-being , deep acting and, genuine acting. According to the Pearson correlation analysis values and regression analysis values surface, deep ,genuine acting with psychological well-being hypotheses were tested. This study, hence paves the way for positioning human capital investments theory in the literature and to strategies HC development practices consciously rather approaching to it with gut feeling.Item Coping with Psychological Issues Amidst COVID-19 Pandemic Times: Perspectives of Undergraduates of Non-State Universities(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2022) Weerarathna, R. S.; Dunuwila, V. R.; Jayasuriya, N. U.; Madhusanka, A. K. P.; Ravishanka, M. K. U.; Pothupitiya, S. N.The COVID-19 pandemic caused much upheaval to people's lifestyles worldwide/globally. Even university undergraduates had to switch from conventional physical classrooms to online learning. According to several studies, various issues pertaining to online learning have intensified the stress levels of undergraduates. This study adopted a qualitative approach. Primary data were gathered through structured interviews, from which coping mechanisms used by the students were identified based on a thematic analysis performed through NVIVO. Coping mechanisms played a critical role in ensuring these undergraduates' ability to handle their psychological issues and continue their academic work. The population included non-state undergraduates in Sri Lanka in the academic year 2020 and the sample size was 30. Findings revealed online learning, high workload, and IT infrastructure issues as key challenges undergraduates face during the pandemic. Among these, two main themes were identified as individual activities and group activities regarding coping mechanisms adopted by undergraduates to alleviate stress. This study recommends/highlights the importance of undergraduates engaging in such activities that help sustain their psychological status. Similarly, the study emphasized the role of universities and higher education institutes in facilitating and promoting such activities among their student population.Item Corporate governance determinants of firm performance: empirical evidence from banking, finance and insurance companies in Sri Lanka(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Panditharathna, K. M.This study examines the relationships between corporate governance attributes on firm performance of listed financial sector companies in Sri Lanka. Empirical analysis focused on 56 companies registered in the Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) covering the industries of banking, finance and insurance for the years 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015. The study used Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) method to analyze the data. The study finds that relationship between corporate governance and firm performance are not strong. Board size, proportion of independent directors and the proportion of female directors have not significant relationship with performance measures. But board effectiveness has a significant positive relationship with ROE. This study enables to companies to evaluate and restructuring of their board to enhance the performance of the company while contributing to the economic development of the country. Findings of prior study are more focused to the developed countries. This study fills that research gap and contribute to the present literature on corporate governance in the industries of banking finance and insurance.Item Corporate Social Responsibility and Social, Economic and Environmental Development in Sri Lanka(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2013) Tilakasiri, K.K.This study reports Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and its present contribution of Sri Lankan context. CSR is renowned and known concept however, it is a new concept in Sri Lanka and research into this area relatively scarce compared with other Asian developing countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malaysia and China. Furthermore, this study reveals complete on the theoretical development and the current CSR practices in Sri Lankan organisations, based on the literature and the researcher’s CSR experience tried to achieve the research objectives which was to identify the basic activities of CSR that was implemented in the Sri Lanka’s organisations. Government and non-government organisations (NGO) have been implemented rules and regulations for community development, health and education development as well as environmental development, which are part of the CSR plans identified by international CSR standards. The government and the private sector both favour the adoption of CSR concepts, and are attempting to promote the implementation of CSR programmes in Sri Lanka.Item Corporate Social Responsibility in Municipal Councils of Sri Lanka (With Special Reference to Solid Waste Functions)(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2013) Fernando, W.R.P.K.There has been a growing knowledge about the corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the modern communities. The CSR includes the feeling or ethics of the good relationship between organizational activities and civil society. There are two kinds of stakeholders in CSR such as internal and external. Three major administration structures can be seen in Sri Lanka; the Central government, Provincial councils and Municipal council (MC). Structure of the MC is the third and lowest level of administration in Sri Lanka. There are 23 MCs in Sri Lanka in 2011. Municipal solid waste is creating a lot of issues in urban areas. The objectives of the study on CSR in MCs of Sri Lanka; to identify stakeholder satisfaction, to recognise priority factors of CSR and to recognise similar groups of the CSR. Sample size is 200. Percentage analysis, multiple regression analysis and factor analysis were used as statistical tools. Aspect of external stakeholders, CSR has failed in MCs in Sri Lanka. Therefore the study recommended that, CSR program can be prepared as a system and mechanism between external stakeholders (employees) and internal stakeholders for getting the maximum benefit for both parties.
