Item Influence of Dietary Pattern and Personal Habits on Dental and Gingival Diseases-A Survey Study(International Journal of Ayurveda, 2019) Abegunasekara, N.S.; Peiris, K.P.P.Orai health is reiated to diet in man1, ways; for an example, nuti'itional influence on craniofacial development, oral cancer and oral infechous diseases. Dental diseases impacL considerably on self-esteem and qtiality of life and treatmenis are expensive. The raost common diseases of the mouth which the rlentai health practitioners come across are dental caries and periodontal diseases. Unique characteristics of these diseases are; they have universal prevaience, they do not unclergo renission or termination if lefl unlreated but accumulate a backlog of unmel needs, Dental diseases include dental caries, developmental defecis of enamel, dental evosion and periorlontai disease" The main cause of tr:oth loss is dental caries in which diet plays an important role. Diet also plays a significant etiological role in dental erosion, the prevalence of rvhich seems to be increasrng, and dietail, components may conlribute to development of enamel defects (e.g. enamel hypoplasia, fluorosis), However, in modern societies, diet and nutrition plai,' a relatively minor role in the etiology of periodontal dieease {gum disease). another cause r:f tooth loss in adults. The present study is rnainly focus to find out the in{luence of dietary pattern and personal habits on dental and periodontal diseases. Data were coilected randomly from 250 patients ofboth sex and all age groups by questionnaire wi;h individuai discussion and anaiSrzed by percenlages. Among lhose, the age group bet,ween 21-30 were recorded the highlv affected age group of dentai and gingival diseases. Less than 40% o{ patients had affects the dietary habits on occurring dental and periodontal tliseases. Also it is revealed that the comrnunity hasn't an explicit awareness on oral hygiene. Conclusion was drawn that dietary pattern and personal habits are causative factors on occuring dental and periodontal diseases.Item The Efficacy of ‘Haridra Khanda’ on Vataja Pratishyaya(Ayurveda Sameeksha, 2016) Peiris, K.P.P.; Abegunasekara, N.S.; Jayawardena, G.A.C.U.Allergic rhinitis is one of the most common and mostprevalent ailments, with an equal distribution more or less throughout the world, rather without any exception to the developed and under developed countries. Bronchial asthma is the main complication of allergic rhinitis as; patients with nasal allergy are four times at risk of developing bronchial asthma. ln allopathic medical system a wide range of antibiotics and decongestants are available, but these drugs give only symptomatic relief. So it is need of hour; to develop a treatment protocol, whichhelps the patients to overcome this pathetic condition. Hence this problem was selected for the study taking all these points into consideration. In this present study Denibadi Phanta, Seetarama Vati and, Haridra Khanda were selected as oral drugs. A1l the (30) patients were registered and randomly divided into two groups. In group A, Denibadi Phanta, Seetarama Yati and in group B Denibadi Phanta, SeetaramaYatialong with Haridra Khanda were administered for a period of one month, The effect of therapy in both groups was assessed by a specially prepared proforma. In both groups, an apparent change in all the sigus and symptoms was observed. After enrolment of the patients, vital signs and symptoms of Vataja Pratishyaya such as nasal discharge, headache and nasal blockage were studied before and after the treatment. The results of the study indicated that the group B was bestowed with a significant relief in almost all the signs and symptoms of Yataja Pratishyaya (allergic rhinitis). Group A also exhibited encouraging results.Item Role of Darvee Guduchyadi Gandusha in Mukhapaka w.s.r. to Stomatitis(Cloud Publications, 2016) Peiris, K.P.P.; Abegunasekara, N.S.; Sandamali, K.I.Mukha Swasthya (oral hygiene) has gained importance now days, because mukha (oral cavity) is such anga, which is exposed to many risk factors in day-to-day life. Mukhapéka is one such disease which causes a lot of discomfott to the sufferer and seen in all classes of the society. It is also called Sarvasara Mukharoga. The aggravated doshas move through the oral cav•ty and produces the päka. The lakshanas of mukhapåka can be correlated to a clinical entity "Aphthous ulced' (recurrent ulcerative stomatitis) explained in the contemporary medical science, which is also characterized by painful superficial ulcers in the movable mucosa of the mouth with recurrent episodes. Currently, the treatment for the Aphthous ulcer being very limited, the present clinical study was designed to evaluate the efficacy of Datvee Guduchyadi Gandusha in the same. 30 patients were registered for the trial and were randomly divided into 2 groups. Group A treated with the treatment with Patola katuka bhiru panta, Kaishor guggu/u and Dan-vee Guduchyadi Gandoosha_ Group B treated the treatment with only the Patola katuka bhiru panta, Kaishor guggufu internally. The results were statistically significant in Group A. Group A was found to be more efficacious in hastening the healing of Mukhapäka compared to Group a.Item Sri Lankan Traditional Medicine and Ayurveda Intervention in the Management of Oral Submucus Fibrosis: A case series(Proceedings at 2nd International Conference on ShalakyaTantra, 2016) Peiris, K.P.P.; Abegunasekara, N.S.Oral sub mucous fibrosis (OSMF) is a pre-malignant lesion of the buccal mucosa caused by chewing betel quid. It results in the progressive inability to open the mouth. Four case senes of oral submucous fibrosis were treated with Sri Lankan traditional and Ayurveda Intervention has been showed marked improvement in trismus and burning sensation throughout the treatment as well as follow-up period. No any adverse effects were reported throughout the period. In conclusion, reported patients' quality of life was improved by Sri Lankan Traditional Medicine and Ayunreda.Item Evaluation of the Antibacterial activity of Kalaka Churna – An Experimental study(Proceedings at 2nd International Conference on Shalakya Tantra, 2016) Abegunasekara, N.S.; Peiris, K.P.P.Kalaka chootna is one of the best medicines used to treal mukharoga , dantaroga and galaroga. This fonnulation has been used speciaiir,, as a lacal treatmenl". Staphylococcus aureLts and Streptococclts p1)ogetlus are main caus ative arganrsrns of tcnsillitis. The present stuciy was designed to detennine the altibacteriai activity ol Kalaka choorna using agar well difftision method in comparison with standard antibiotic Amoxicillin against the Staphltlococcus o-ut"etLs (ATCC 25923) and Streptococcus pyogeTrus (ciinical isoiate). The samples of kar.aia were prepared as two kind of decoction (4:i and 6:1), Amoxiciilin as positive control and triplicates were made for each test. Observation was recorded by measuring the diameter of the inilibitory zones surrounding the discs. Accorciing to the results inhibitory effect of 6:1 sailpie was significant foi Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pycget?us. According to the resuits inhibitory effect of two sainples in different concentrated levels, it is concluded that Kalaka chcorna has an antibacterial activity as a kavala and it was not d.ependent on the concentration 1eve1 of the decoction. Ald also it was conflrmed that the paribhasha of kavala or gandoosha is authentic, The present stud5z of the antibacterial activity of Kalaka choorna fonns a primary platforrn for f"rrther phytochemical and phannalologlcii sfudies to discover new aniibiorics.Item Particularism of Oral Hygiene(Proceedings at 2nd International Conference on Shalakya Tantra, 2016) Abegunasekara, N.S.; Peiris, K.P.P.Ayurveda is the ancient system of health-care and longevity. It involves a holistic view of man, his health and illness. Ayurvedic freatment is aimed at patient as an organic whole and treatment consists of salubrious use of drugs, diets and certain practices. Even though dentistry was not a specialized branch of Ayurveda, it is included in shalakya tantra. Prevention is probably the most important. This includes awaking the community on how to maintain a good oral health through Ayurveda dinacharya. The present conceptual study is focused on the possible role of Ayurveda in the management of oral diseases. For the purpose of this study, details were taken from authentic Ayurveda texts: journals and authentic websites. In Ayurveda classics many things have mentioned for prevention of dental diseases. Scientific validations of the Ayurveda dental health practices could justify their incorporation into modern dental care. Publicity of these techniques using appropriate media would benefit the general population by giving more confidence in the ancient practices, thus preventing oral diseases.Item Efficacy of Sarjarsadilepa in Vipadika –A clinical study(ÄRYAVAIDYAN, 2016) Abegunasekara, N.S.; Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.Vipädika, a dry skin disease characterized by severe itching and intense pain in feet or palms, is considered as one Of the k$udraku$ha in äyurveda. A research was conducted to find out the efficacy Of a herbal cream in the management Of vipädika. 30 patients randomly selected from the dermatology clinic, OP unit of Garnpaha Wickramarachchi Ayurvedic teaching Hospital, Sri Lanka, were equally divided into two groups. Both the groups were given some selected äyurvedic preparations internally. In addition. group was prescribed Sarjarasädi lepa (known as Dummalädi lepa in Sri Lanka) for external application. The results showed significant decline in severity Of pain, fissuring, itching and eruptions after three weeks in group Comparative analysis before and after three weeks in group showed 'p' values less than 0.05. The study revealed that the trial drug is an effective herbal cream in vipädika.Item A survey study on effect of video display terminals (vdts) on vision(Sri Lanka Journal of Indigenous Medicine(SLJIM), 2014) Peiris, K.P.P.; Abegunasekara, N.S.; Ansumali, N.P.P.The computer has become a common item in today's society. It is estimated that approximately 45 million workers directly use computers by staring into video display terminals for hours continuously. This prolonged exposure to video display terminals has been the cause of a visual and ergonomic disorder called "Computer Vision Syndrome". Computer Vision Syndrome is a group of symptoms which crop up from the extended viewing of the video display terminals,when the demands of the task exceed the abilities ofthe viewer. Ayurveda mentioned many common reasons for the eye diseases such as looking at one object for prolong time and looking at an object with glare. The main object of this study is to know the incidence of computer vision syndrome among regular computer users who were having minimum one year exposure, and having minimum eight hours per day exposure. The study was carried out as a survey among 300 volunteer computer professionals working at different centers. Group A was Treated with Kai"/.'om C uggn/nb and Dance locally Croup B SGIh only the Paiolakaruka,blliru Pantaand Kaishora Gugguluinternally. When comparing the p value, group A has shown significan results than g-rcup E for oral mucosal blisters, oral mucosal ulceration, oral Inueosal swelling and burning sensation respecrively. Croup A was found to be more efficacious in hastening The healing of Mukhapaka.
