Promoting Employee Engagement: Concept Paper for the Development of a Conceptual Framework
(Wayamba Journal of Management, 2022) Priyashantha, K.G.; De Alwis, A.C.; Welmilla, I.
This study aimed to examine how employee engagement can be increased through the perceived desirability of disruptive Human Resource Management (HRM) technologies where sociological phenomena like gender stereotype change and work realities as work- family conflicts derive lower employee engagement. This study is a literature review in which employee engagement, gender stereotype change, work-family conflicts, and disruptive HRM technologies literature were surveyed and reviewed from two perspectives. Both perspectives developed a conceptual framework that focuses on three impacts. The first is the role of work-family conflicts in mediating the impact of changing gender stereotypes on employee engagement. Second, the perceived desirability of disruptive HRM technologies has a direct impact on increasing employee engagement. The third effect is that the perceived desirability of disruptive HRM technologies has a moderating effect on the impact of work- family conflicts on employee engagement. The paper provides directions for empirical research basedon the predicted impacts.

Mediating Effect of Job Satisfaction on the Relationship between Emotional Labour and Organizational Commitment among the Physiotherapists
(Wayamba Journal of Management, 2022) Fernando, H.C.B.P.; De Alwis, A.C.
Multiple studies on Emotional Labour (EL) among various medical staff segments have been conducted, but none have focused on physiotherapists. Consequently, this study aims to examine the connections between (EL) and Job Satisfaction (JS) among physiotherapists as well as the role of job satisfaction as a moderator in the relationship between emotional labour and Organisational Commitment (OC). A cross-sectional study involving 208 physiotherapists from Sri Lanka was designed. Regression analysis and the Sobel test were used to analyse the data. It was found that EL has a significant beneficial impact on the OC of physiotherapists. Moreover, the EL has a substantial and positive effect on JS. In addition, it was unearthed that JS plays a crucial role in transmitting the effects of EL to OC. Consequently, JS serves as a mediator in this relationship. In addition, the EL dimensions, deep acting, and surface acting all positively affect the OC. This study contributes to empirical findings on the EL of physiotherapists. Due to JS's role as a mediator, hospital administrators should consider the emotions of physiotherapists in order to enhance to being and job satisfaction. Numerous studies have been conducted on various segments of the medical staff, but none have centred on physiotherapists. This study confirms JS's role as a mediator in the relationship between EL and OC in the field of physiotherapy and encourages future research to concentrate more on EL. These findings contribute to the interdisciplinarity of physiotherapy research by incorporating psychological perspectives from emotion management research.

Work-Family Conflicts in the Context of Labour Market Change: A Systematic Literature Review
(Management and Economics Review, 2022) Priyashantha, K.G.; De Alwis, A.C.; Welmilla, Indumathi
Reviews on Work-Family Conflicts (WFCs) research are done to establish new knowledge and to set future research directions as the subject evolves and the gaps in existing reviews need to be filled in. The purpose of the research was to find out the common areas addressed in the empirical research landscape on WFCs during the last five years and the areas that need more focus for future research. The study used the systematic literature review methodology using the PRISMA framework. Four hundred twenty (420) empirical studies conducted between 2015 and 2020 were considered for the review. The finding revealed that eleven common areas had been addressed. They can be categorized into four themes: “volatile resources, gender, and mental health outcomes”, “social support, work-life balance policies, and well-being problems”, “emotional exhaustion and work-family enrichment” and “job-related outcomes”. The results have implications for theory, practitioners, and future researchers. Furthermore, there were some limitations to this study.

The Influence of E-HRM on Modernizing the Role of HRM Context
    (Economies, 2022) De Alwis, A.C.; Berislav, A.; Marko, S.
Human Resource Management (HRM) practitioners must play multiple roles to achieve both functional and organizational objectives. In the current business environment, Electronic Human Resource Management (E-HRM) is a pervasive application of Information Technology (IT), and its global adoption is now widespread. This study’s primary objective is to determine the effect of EHRM implementation in Sri Lanka on the evolving HRM function. The study employed a qualitative methodology. On the basis of prior research, a study framework was formulated. After collecting the findings, the researcher analyzed the data using the study framework. To answer the research question and attain the research objectives, the researcher compared the theory to the findings during the analysis. The researcher determined that HRM was unfamiliar with E-HRM applications but was utilizing E-HR tools in their daily operations. According to the study, HRM places a greater emphasis on administrative tasks. The greatest benefit of implementing E-HRM practice is that it liberates HRM from intermediary roles, allowing them to focus on strategic planning in HR organizations and transforming HR practitioners from administrative paper handlers to strategic planners.

Gender stereotypes change outcomes: a systematic literature review
(Emerald Publishing Limited, 2021) Priyashantha, K.G.; De Alwis, A.C.; Welmilla, I.
Purpose Even though researchers have discussed gender stereotype change, only a few studies have specifically projected outcomes or consequences. Hence, the main purpose of this study is to examine the impact of gender stereotype change concerning the different outcomes. Design/methodology/approach In achieving the purpose, the authors searched and reviewed current empirical knowledge on the outcomes of gender stereotype change in the Scopus and EBSCOhost databases from 1970 to 2020. The entire process was conducted through a systematic literature review methodology. The article selection criteria were executed using the PRISMA article selection flowchart steps, and 15 articles were included for the review. Findings The findings reveal that the outcomes from gender stereotype change research can be categorized mainly under the themes of “family and children,” “marriage” and “equality and women's employment.” Research limitations/implications The co-occurrence network visualization map reveals gaps in the existing literature. There may be more possible outcomes relating to the current realities, and more cross-cultural research is needed. Practical implications These outcomes provide some implications for policymakers. Originality/value Even though researchers have discussed gender stereotype change on its various outcomes or consequences, research is less. Hence, this study provides a synthesis of consequences and addresses the gaps in the area.

The new mechanism for the performance evaluation of cooperatives
    (2012) De Alwis, A.C.
Co-operatives are exceptional type of organization because of their purpose for existence. They are running business based on predetermined norms called “Co-operative value and principles”. In point of fact, if they depart from this so-called value system, there is no cooperative continuation hereafter. One of the special features behind this body is the owner (member) plays dual role with it, as an owner and the foremost customer segment. Because of those surroundings they cannot construct profit maximization as an organizational objective. But really, they have to earn some profits for the survival and long term advancement of the unit. Because of this foundation and special purpose for existence, they can be recognizing as “Co-operative business” by combing the purpose of the entity and its operation. Thus performance of this special entity must be measured through unique mechanism appropriate to the specialty. This article suggests new mechanism for the performance evaluation named “Co-operative performance matrix” by combining business and co-operative valueperformances.

Motivation for buying branded items: a cross country application of Maslows hierarchy of needs in consumer decision making
    (2011) De Alwis, A.C.; Chovancova, M.; Asamoah, M.E.; Samarakoon, S.A.K.A.; Guo, Y.
The brand is a pledge to buyers about the quality and prestige of a product or service. The main objective of this study is to analyse the importance of branding in the decision making of buyers and to examine the motives that drive consumer decisions when buying branded items. The conceptual framework of this study groups the hierarchy of needs according to Maslow into two main motives. The motives are risk reduction and social demonstrance. In this study, the non-probability sampling method was used to select respondents from four different countries namely, the Czech Republic, China, Ghana and Sri Lanka and a semi-structured questionnaire was administered. A total of 979 valid responses from the respective countries were used in the analysis. Findings from the study are that, among the selected countries, brands play an important role in consumer buying behaviour and risk reduction, social demonstrance are motives that drive consumer purchases.
