Abstract: Mulayatana were originated and developed as higher Buddhist education centers. There were eight Mulayatanas belonged to Mahavihara, Abhayagiri and Jethawana Buddhist sects. These Mulayatana were centers of learning, holding the positions of universities for higher studies. The curricula of all these institutions held Buddhism in high esteem while different centers favored different sects of Buddhism.
