Sri Lanka has a long history of Japanese language education and ranks 24th in terms of number of learners. The learning objectives in the South Asian region, including Sri Lanka, differ significantly from those worldwide, with "work and study abroad orientation" being predominant. While surveys have been conducted regarding such learning motivations and objectives, it has become clear that these are divided by learning stages and fail to capture recent trends. Therefore, this study conducted a survey on "Japanese language learning motivations" targeting learners at the secondary and higher education levels as well as those outside formal school education. The results revealed that domestic factors such as changes in the learning environment and political, economic, and cultural background, as well as external factors such as Japan's aging society with declining birthrate and labor shortages, are intertwined. Furthermore, the need for improvements in Japanese language education and the implementation of education regarding cultural and legal aspects for employment purposes has emerged.
