This paper examines the reasons for the senior students of the University of Kelaniya to follow the ELTU Certificate Course. In a context where most of the 15t year students are reluctant to register for the English courses, it is important to study the reasons for the 2nd,3rd and 4th year students to show a great interest to get themselves registered for the certificate course. The purpose of the observation is to identify the main reasons in order to use this knowledge to cater to the needs of the students. According to the statistics, there had been about 600 students registered last year. Having the hypothesis that it is mainly due to their attitude; credit offering English courses would affect their degree, guided interviews and questionnaires will be employed to collect necessary data. The sample will be the students of the certificate course (2006/2007 and 2007/2008) from the different faculties.en_US
