IMPACT OF COGNITIVE SKILLS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF FINAL YEAR UNDERGRADUATES WITH THE MODERATING EFFECT OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO UNIVERSITIES IN THE WESTERN PROVINCE
(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2025) Livera, W. M. I.; Jayasinghe, C.
The objective of this study was to analyze the impact of cognitive skills on the academic performance of undergraduates in Sri Lanka and examine the moderating effect of university extracurricular activities on the relationship between cognitive skills and academic performance of undergraduates in Sri Lanka. Cognitive skills were conceptualized in terms of creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking. Management Faculty undergraduates from state universities in the Western Province make up the population. In this study, out of the target population, 342 undergraduates were selected as the sample. This study used quantitative research methods, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire distributed to final-year undergraduates in the Western Province. The findings of this study indicate that there is a significant impact of undergraduates’ cognitive skills on academic performance, and that higher levels of extracurricular activities strengthen the relationship between cognitive skills and academic performance. This study's findings provide better guidance for university undergraduates to become more productive and effective through national universities in Sri Lanka. The results of the study could guide the creation of curricula by highlighting the value of encouraging creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking in management undergraduates. It is recommended that state universities take necessary action to develop undergraduates’ cognitive skills in an appropriate manner.

IMPACT OF AWARENESS AND USAGE OF E-LEARNING PLATFORMS ON THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN FACULTY OF MANAGEMENT, UNIVERSITY OF KELANIYA, SRI LANKA
(Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2025) Nimanthaka, J. A. S.; Welmilla, I.
This study investigates the impact of awareness and usage of e-learning platforms on the academic performance of undergraduate students in the Faculty of Management at the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. The research follows a quantitative approach, employing a structured questionnaire to collect data from 303 undergraduate students. The study's objectives include examining how students' awareness of e-learning platforms such as Learning Management Systems (LMS), Zoom, and Microsoft Teams, influences their academic performance as well as assessing the role of usage frequency and convenience in shaping learning outcomes. The methodology involved statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics, reliability and validity tests, and multiple regression analysis. The findings revealed that both awareness and usage significantly impact academic performance, with awareness exhibiting a slightly stronger influence. The results further emphasize the complementary nature of awareness and usage, where students with higher knowledge of e-learning tools tend to utilize them more effectively, leading to improved academic outcomes. The study presents several implications for university administrators, policymakers, and educators. Practical recommendations include increasing training programs, enhancing platform accessibility, and integrating digital tools into the curriculum more effectively. Limitations include the study's focus on a single faculty within one university, which may affect the generalizability of the results. Future research should explore similar relationships in other faculties and institutions, adopt a longitudinal approach, and consider additional moderating factors such as internet accessibility and digital literacy.

The Effect of Facebook Usage Intensity and the Personality Type of Individuals on Academic Performance: A Study among Final Year Undergraduates of Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya
(5th HRM Student Research Symposium 2018, Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Sandamali, K. D.; De Silva, G. H. B. A.
During last couple of years, it had been quite evident that the academic performance of undergraduates are inconsistent over time and gender bias in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies of University of Kelaniya. With the wide usage of internet and related services across the globe, the life style of people started to change. The global internet users have been passed 4 billion and among those 3 billion people around use social media in each month by using the mobile devices. The social media made major effect to the society and effect to the students’ academic performance in all the countries across the world. The purpose of this study is to examine whether Facebook usage intensity and the personality type impact on the university undergraduates’ academic performance. The primary data were collected from a sample of 142 university final year undergraduates via a validated standard survey instrument. The statistical data analysis techniques used for impact testing were chi-square and Nagelkarke R- square of logistic regression. The study brings up results showing that there is a significant impact on Facebook usage intensity and undergraduates’ academic performance relationship. Moreover, it has been observed, that personality type does not moderate the relationship between Facebook usage intensity and academic performance

Determinants of Academic Performance: A Study among the Undergraduates of Sri Lankan State Universities
(5th HRM Student Research Symposium 2018, Department of Human Resource Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Rupasinghe, P. D. D. H. K.; De Silva, G. H. B. A.
The purpose of this study is to perform a scientific study on the causality of academic performance level in comparison with the emotional level of the undergraduates. Therefore, the general objective of this study is to assess the impact of emotional intelligence on level of academic performance among state university sector undergraduates in Sri Lanka. The researcher adopted a mixed method approach to scientifically collect data, analyze and come to a conclusion. The first half of the methodology was based on quantitative methodology and the findings of the statistical analysis was validated and confirmed using the qualitative data. The final sample consisted of 211 undergraduates selected at the convenience of the researches, from state universities in Sri Lanka. Data for the statistical analysis was collected through a structured questionnaire. Convenience sampling technique was applied to select the sample. The data was analyzed using Excel, SPSS and Atlas ti. The statistical analysis provided the correlation, chi square, and logistic regression that confirmed the direction of the relationship between the Emotional Intelligence and the Academic Performance. The results from Correlation Analysis, show that there is a weak positive relationship between emotional intelligence and level of academic performance. The gender of the undergraduates moderates the relationship between emotional intelligence and the level of academic performance. The qualitative data analysis reveals that there are seven factors other than Emotional Intelligence to determine on the level of academic performance. The found factors are commitment, language, work life balance, capacity, awareness, stress, medical reason, happiness and social media. The findings of the current study again confirm the general notion that the importance of emotional intelligence has been a must needed feature in learning partners
