Item Usage of Library Classification in University Libraries in Sri Lanka: a Study based on Kelaniya and Peradeniya Universities(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Indrachapa, W.R.N.The basic function of the classification is to combine, demarcate and categorize those items or entities or materials which are focused as according to their similar characteristics found in such materials and to distinguish those which have unequal characteristics. At present, this classification concept has been introduced into the field of libraries. Library classification is a strategy designed to make the best use of the intellectual content of books and other forms in the library. The main objective of this research is to study how classification is used in university libraries. Among other objectives are to identify the classification systems used in university libraries to identify which edition of the classification is used, to identify the major classification functions used, to explore how staff understand the value and the usage of classifications to explore how to make things easier by using classification and to identify problems that arise in the use of library classification of university libraries. The research strategy used here is the survey study design. The research is being carried out under a qualitative methodology. The staff of the 15 university libraries and their libraries were selected as the population of the study. The University of Kelaniya and Peradeniya were selected among the 15 university libraries as the sample and the sample comprised of the staff members using library classification in respective libraries. Primary data is collected using questionnaire, interview, observation and the secondary data will be collected using articles of research journals and the dissertation in the subject area.Item Public Library User’s Reading Habits: a Study(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Kulatunga, R.K.The study sought to consider reading habits among public library users. Reading is an art of interpreting the printed tools and written words. Reading is considered a stepping stone to success, not just in schools but also throughout the adult life of an individual. Also, it is regarded as a process, a mode of thinking, a kind of real experience and involves many complex skills: the ability to perceive printed words, to skim for information and then perhaps read intensively. With adult readers, it is also found that reading contributes significantly to job success, career development and ability to respond to change. A public library is a library for the general public. That is accessible for a child to adult and there are no age barriers. Public libraries exist in many countries across the world and are often considered an essential part of having an educated and literate population. This study aims to understand the nature of reading in general, focused on user attitudes towards reading habits. Also indicated that the purpose of reading, preference of language, preferred from of the library collection, assistance from the library staff in the use of resources and services is necessary to users meet their information requirements. Study was conducted in Uva province, Badulla District selecting the main public libraries at Badulla and users of those selected institutions. 120 Questionnaires were distributed among users of two main public libraries using the simple random sampling technique, respondents’ rate was 98.3%. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software, Figures and Tables were used to present the result of the findings. The findings showed that majority of the respondents acknowledged the importance of reading their subject textbooks, novels, Newspapers and Newspaper supplements. Further, the data suggest that although the availability of digital reading materials ware prominent, users like to read print books than electronic materials. Prefered language of reading was mothertongue. Also the data dipicts that the most feverable place of reading among users as their personal space. The majority of the respondents showcased that the public library and the staff ware more userfriendly and supportive in providing the needy reading materials. This research findings suggest that it is necessary to imrove the use of automated library services which are more easyer to reach in modern library systems, Also it provdes more learning spaces for future readers, this includes use of scientific, academic reading contentsItem The Purpose of Using Journals and Difficulties they are facing among Management Students in Sri Lankan Universities.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Peiris, P.A.I.Among many Information resources, Journal is important source for access to latest information. “A periodical devoted to disseminating original research and commentary on current developments in a specific discipline, sub discipline, or field of studyusually published in quarterly, bimonthly, or monthly issues sold by subscription. Journal articles are usually written by the person (or persons) who conducted the research.” (Online Dictionary of Library and Information Science) The main objectives of the study are to identify objectives and need of using journals by management students and find out issues of they have to face. The study based on survey method. Questionnaires were used for data collection. Microsoft Excel was used analyzed the collected data. Under the survey research method, two Universities of Kelaniya, Sri Jayawardanapura were used as the sample. Used 100 management students in both of universities. As the result of the study, most of the students used journal for needs of assignments. Issues of they have to face are lack of awareness of management journals in library, they have to spend more time to find journal article which they want. The study suggest that Raising awareness of readers about the co-ordination of periodical sectional journals and also the seekingof journal. Using the systematic and continual searching tricks and methods for easing off the accession into journals and articles. Presenting the newly bought journals for readers and publishing hand book consisted information of periodical section for raising awareness of users about latest journal by the library.Item Use of Electronic Information Resources by medical students at the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Wanasinghe, W.M.P.G.K.T.Due to rapid stride in the field of information and communication technology, libraries are getting completely modernize in to information access centers in electronic forms. This paper explores the role in medical student’s knowledgeof searching information and the use of electronic resources at the faculty. Objectives of the research are to identify the awareness of e-resources available at the university, to study usage of electronic resources available at the university and which areas of training needed on e-resources usage at the faculty of medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.The survey method was used for data collection. The structured questionnaires were used to collect data among the medical undergraduates at the faculty from 1st to 30th September 2015 covering question on computer literacy, Internet access and location, Knowledge and use of electronic resources and training needs. Using simple random sampling methods, seventy questionnaires were distributed. Responded rate was 71%, whom 20% student’s access internet daily. And 34% access internet weekly.50% of internet access student’s access e-books and others access to social media. 50% of the library visited undergraduate did not aware about e-resources available at the library and the university. As medical undergraduatesmany respondents felt that e-resources were important and required awareness to access e-resources.And revealed that undergraduates who express an interest in learning about the library’s electronic resources. Based on these findings, it was recommended to conduct a user awareness programs for the medical undergraduates with hand on session use e-resources available at the library and consortia. And future suggested that library service can be extended and modified to do training for undergraduate to access and use e-resources.
