Item The Impact of Microfinance Services on the Growth of the Microenterprises in Sri Lanka(3rd National Research Conference on Applied Social Statistics (NRCASS – 2017), 2017) Badullahewage, S. U.The microfinance is the provision of financial services to low income sectors, including the micro and small enterprises. It is mostly used in developing economies where micro and small enterprises do not have access to other sources of financial assistance. The microenterprises said to be the less privileged business group in the society which could play a significant role in the economy. There are substantial microenterprises operate in the Homagama region, but no study of impact of microfinance services on the growth of the microenterprises has been conducted. Therefore, the study intended to ascertain the impact of microfinance services on the growth of income and productivity of the microenterprises being operated on the micro loans and advisory and training services provided by microfinance institutions. All microenterprises in Homagama is the target population and out of which 60 microenterprises which have obtained micro loans from the microfinance institutions were selected based on the judgmental sampling method. The primary data were collected on face to face interview through structured questionnaire and secondary data were collected through literature survey. Quantitative and qualitative techniques were used to undertake data analysis respectively based on descriptive statistics and parameter estimation and open ended questions. The paired sample t-test, multiple regression, chi-square test, gamma and Kendal tau-b tests in the SPSS software were used to achieve the expected objective. The findings of the study indicated that micro loan and advisory and training services have created positive impact on the income and productivity growth of the micro enterprises. Moreover, majority agreed that the micro loan was fair enough for the expected tasks, they were satisfied with financial assistance received and success of their business. So, the study concluded that the microfinance services create impact on the growth of the microenterprises in Homagama region. Further, microfinance institutions should develop diversification in their products and government should create legal and regulatory environment to the entry of microfinancing by local and foreign investors.Item Growth of Library Science Education and Continuing Professional Development for Library Professionals in State University Libraries in Tamil Nadu: A Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Natarajan, N.O.The aim and Purpose of the present Study is to investigate the predominant scenario of library and Information Science (LIS) Education system in Tamil Nadu to focus about the courses offered, qualitative education in the discipline of library and information science. To find out the effectiveness of the training programmes for State University Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals and various aspects of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in the State Universities, Tamil Nadu, India. The findings of the study reveal that most of the professionals do have a positive look on CPD activities and satisfied with the effectiveness of training programmes particularly on, on-the- job training. In-house training will improve their job performance and prefer to develop new services from what they had learned. The ideal duration for CPD courses should be one week is what the research shows. Institutional problem is the major issue in participation of CPD activities. This study is the first of its kind dealing with effectiveness of CPD programmes for LIS professionals in the State Universities, Tamil Nadu, India.Item Impact of inflation on growth: with reference to Sri Lanka(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Semasinghe, W.M.Inflation is one of the greatly discussed economic variables which make significant impact on many macroeconomic variables including growth, employment, import, export, investment, savings and money supply. Very high as well as very low rate of inflation are detrimental to economic performance. However, there is no consensus among economists over the precise rate of inflation which favorable to an economy. As literature reveals, the relationship between inflation and economic growth has been at the center of the macroeconomic policy debate since 1960s. Numerous empirical analysis have been documented on the relationship between these two variables and have arrived different conclusions. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the impact of inflation on economic growth in Sri Lanka. During the past seven decades since independence, successive governments have adopted different policy instruments for the economic progress of the country. Hence, the present paper intended to examine the relationship between inflation and growth at the different policy regimes. The analysis mainly relied on quantitative approach and secondary data collected from the Department of Census and Statistics and Central Bank of Sri Lanka were employed. Multivariable regression analysis was used to examine the relationship between inflation and selected macroeconomic variables. Based on the empirical results, the study concluded that there is a positive relationship between inflation and growth, but the relationship is not strong in the period covered by the analysis. Only during the seven year period from 1970-77 that has adopted closed economic policy framework has established a relatively high relationship between the two.Item Growth Inclusiveness and Well-being in India: An Analysis in terms of Relative Deprivation(Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2013) Jayanta, SenLast two decades have witnessed remarkable economic growth in many Asian countries. Almost all the countries including India proceeded towards market orientation and thereby achieved high momentum in economic growth. India, though achieved a high acceleration in economic growth, distributional issues have received much attention to the researchers and policy makers. Much sharper focus has been given on inclusive growth which ensures broad based participation by all the section of the economy. In this paper we are to examine to what extent the observed growth process in India is broad based and inclusive. Growth inclusiveness is examined in terms of the state of relative deprivation. Inter-personal expenditure gaps for different consumption items are used to assess the level of in-built differences in wellbeing among the people. Rural–urban differentials are made explicitly.Item Determinants of Growth of Supermarkets in Sri Lanka(University of Kelaniya, 2005) Karunaratne, H.D.; Vishvanathan, D.The number of supermarkets has been rapidly growing in Sri Lanka during the recent past. This study attempts to identify determinants of such growth. There are four main objectives of this paper, namely (i) to understand the factors which are considered in establishing the supermarket outlets;(ii) to understand the factors which determine their growth; (iii) to understand how supermarkets can increase profits by minimizing social and economic externalities; and (iv) to understand how consumers can be better off by using supermarkets. In order to achieve these objectives, this study present SWOT of supermarkets, analyzing the growing trends of supermarkets, socio-economic characteristics, family consumption patterns and income and expenditure patterns of supermarket shoppers. This study utilized both published and unpublished macro and micro level data. The primary data was obtained by means of conducting in-depth interviews and two surveys. Secondary data was collected from the survey findings published by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. According to the facts established by means of analysing the data collected, a strong relationship was found between the two variables, growth of supermarkets and the emerging consumer behaviour patterns in Sri Lanka. Further, the study revealed a clear change of the patterns of consumer behaviour associated with the expansion of supermarkets. Finally, interdependent relationship between the growth of supermarkets and emerging patterns of consumer behaviour was identified in the context of urban Sri Lanka.
