Item Green Library: The Perforation of the Future .(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Salunkhe, A.B.In this contemporary era, especially in the field of library and information science, the term ‘library’ has undergone a major transformation from traditional library to virtual library to Green Library. Green Library also known as a sustainable library is a library built with environmental concerns in mind. Green libraries are a part of the larger green building movement. Libraries are no longer only repositories of knowledge, but are also important information resources for raising awareness about environmental concerns. Green libraries educate the public about environmental issues through their collections, sustainable and environmentally friendly facilities, and public library programs. In this articlethe following topics will be discussed: a) the various aspects of green libraries, b) what is the need for green libraries in today's age? c) How libraries can contribute as an environmental customer, d) Green Library Movements at National and international level, d) which organizations have taken the initiatives in India and on which basis the green libraries are rated? The paper concludes that green libraries maximize the effects of natural sun light and natural air flow; green libraries are thoughtfully designed while taking into account site selection to structural design, energy use, materials used and human health effects.Librariesshould regularly update themselves on green library trends which will create the space in libraries to enhance the green practices for a sustainable green library environment.Item ‘Research Ecology’: Build Beyond the Green.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) John, N. V.; Sornam, A.An ecosystem is a community of living organisms in conjunction with the non-living components of their environment, interacting as a system. When we speak about building healthy knowledge components in society, such as library, we have to keep in mind the fact of creating a proper ecosystem for the researcher. For it is him/her who is going to use the library as his/her habitat. Every librarian and the library committee should look into some key factors when constructing a library. India has been holding in its lap a treasure of bountiful nature and great treasures of cultural values. Our sages and ancestors have left us, rich meaningful traditions and routes for attainment of true knowledge. How can we use these as some steps to improve our libraries into temples of wisdom? As golden gatekeepers of knowledge we have to provide a apt environment for our researchers to encode and decode the recorded knowledge into a living one. How do we achieve this? What are the things we have in hand and what could make a library a better environment for researchers? How can green library as a concept help Indian libraries link the resources to the researcher? This article discusses these points with its limited scope.Item Green and Energy Efficiency in Library(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Kanagavel, P.; Sridhar, K.; Gomathinayagam, S.The way the world has used global natural resources in the past has placed a tremendous strain on the environment – depleting our natural resources, polluting the environment, warming the earth, raising sea levels, and endangering our biodiversity. Climate change has become the inevitable result of our past actions. According to a report published in India, cities consume two thirds of global energy use and 76% of the world’s energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) are also emitted by cities through transport, industry, and building and construction related activities. Sustainable development has always been a key consideration for the development of India. Growing and developing our city state in an efficient, clean and green way by utilizing less resources; generating less waste; reducing pollution to the environment. In response to broad concerns regarding the environment and climate change, Green Library are becoming much more common and are increasingly in demand by Libraries. The online Dictionary of Library and Information Science defines Green Libraries as: A Library designed to minimize negative impact on the natural environment and maximize indoor environment quality by means of careful site selection, use of natural construction materials and biodegradable products, conservation of resources (water, energy, paper, responsible waste, disposal, Recycling etc). In new constructing and library renovation, sustainability is increasingly achieved through LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) certification a Rating system developed and administered by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). A Green Library also knows as a Sustainable Library, is a library build with environmental concerns in mind, Green libraries are a part of the larger green building movement. The main aim of this article to identify and create awareness about the reduction of energy consumption and energy cost in the Libraries. The green and energy saving design of library consists of the following parts: integrating energy management system in monitoring and control systems, complex vacuum glazing of building envelope, energy saving illuminating system, convertible frequency air-conditioner of HVAC and rainwater utilization system. In recent years, building energy consumption increased fast in India, especially the public buildings.Based on this research, some possible actions can be suggested for improving Library activities and output indicators towards mitigating the Climate Change and Global Warming.
