Collaborative Practices of Using ICT in Special Libraries in Sri Lanka
(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Dharmathilaka, W.D.
With the rapid growth of information, it has had an impact on the library industry as well. Collaboration is important to every type of libraries. Often the information in all fields is important to the research community. Due to the rapid growth of information, research output, the collaboration is specific to specialized libraries. Other support services for special libraries, different factors affecting to the area in which the library is located, library resources, communication facilities etc. are some of the grounding factors where a collaboration is very much required when thought of special libraries. The problem in the study is why the collaborative practices required for the special libraries is in Sri Lanka, what is it present status, how it is used and so on. The main objective of the research is to study whether ICT is being used to implement special library collaboration activities in Sri Lanka. Other objectives include identifying information technology used in implementing collaboration strategies, identifying barriers when implementation of collaborative practices in practice, and suggesting strategies to mitigate barriers to collaboration. The study used the special libraries in the Colombo, Sri Lanka. 50 special libraries were selected as a sample in the Colombo district. It composed of 78% of special library category. This study applies quantitative technique. It is expected to use primary and secondary sources to collect data for study. For collecting secondary data books, periodicals, databases and internet sources are expected to use. It is expected to circulate questionnaire among 50 librarians in the selected for the sample. The presentation of data in the study is aimed at submitting logical information with tables and graphs with proper use of analytical techniques. The study is expected to be completed in the second quarter of the third year of the BA Honors Degree in the Department of Library and Information Science at the University of Kelaniya.

Automation of Records and Tapes Collections of the Library Attached to Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation.
(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) De Silva, H.S.A.
Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) is the first Asiatic broadcasting entity established under British administration and the recording commenced in 1936. There are more than 25000 records and tapes in the library. There are five records and tapes libraries in the SLBC. Different physical forms like records, tapes, CDs, Dat and MD are available and they contain programs conducted, songs, music, advertisements, news, and notices and so on. The purpose of this paper is to examine the process of automation of records and tapes collections available in the library attached to SLBC and other objective is to explore the issues facing when digitization the collections. Automation means the activity or process done to achieve good results with the help of equipment, machines, tools and techniques specially computers and computer applications When automating the library attached to SLBC, the process should be started from automating the collections like records, tapes with their content and data with a mechanism of combining the metadata with the sounds of these. Later these sounds should be incorporated to the digital technology. Automation of the SLBC library began in 2009. Most important and valuable sounds belong to old songs, rare songs, songs and other programs that are prone to decay and ruination are being digitized at present. It is in the scrutinization process and study that digitization has to be fully operated with the help of a compatible library management software. How to make an access system for the users purpose for this digitized collections with the Metadata belong to records and tapes and how a classification system used whether the AACR 2 or RDA system is used in the anticipated database are some of the complications the library facing at this stage. Developing and keeping up proper authority file management, selection of the different fields needed for the above database and providing user accesses for information retrieval are issues to be addressed very scientifically for enabling and providing quality service. Whole digitization proses is a team work which us to be done very carefully. Everybody involving this activity is delivering very concomitant job. Due to this dynamic transformation cost effect, audience friendly, easy maintenance, less labor driven effective and efficient environment seen in the SLBC library premises. With these developments, SLBC library has achieved a success in digitizing very important treasures for preserving, conserving, effective organization and delivery of sound to the audience.

Quality Management System in Libraries: A Case Study
(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Rao, P.V.
International Standards are the backbone of the society, ensuring the safety and quality of products and services, facilitating and improving the present environment in which we live in. Conformity to International Standards helps reassure consumers those products, systems and organizations are safe, reliable and good for the environment. When products and services conform to International Standards consumers can have confidence that they are safe, reliable and of good quality. ISO 9001 is a worldwide standard designed and developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Switzerland. ISO 9001 is currently in use by close to one million organizations around the world. It is truly a worldwide standard for quality. Obtaining ISO 9001 certification puts libraries in a very select group. ISO standards draw on international expertise and experience and are therefore a vital resource for governments when developing public policy. Libraries around the world can the standards to provide quality library and information services to their clientele. A quality management system (QMS) is a formalized system that documents processes, procedures, and responsibilities for achieving quality policies and objectives. A QMS helps coordinate and direct an organization’s activities to meet customer and regulatory requirements and improve its effectiveness and efficiency on a continuous basis. ISO 9001:2015 is an example of a Quality Management System. ISO 9001:2015, the international standard specifying requirements for quality management systems, is the most prominent approach to quality management systems. For libraries, certification can be a useful tool to add credibility, by demonstrating that services provided meet the expectations of users. The benefits of the certification are numerous and include user satisfaction and user centred services in the libraries. The paper discusses the various benefits of quality management system in libraries and adopting a quality management system standard; describe the various issues related to ISO 9001:2015 standard; and shares a case study of implementing such a system in the library attached to M G State Institute of Public Administration, Punjab, Chandigarh (India).
