Item A study on the necessity of the utilization of the new managerial concepts for the increased productivity of the television news room(4th International Conference on Social Sciences 2018, Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Sakalasooriya, S.M.E.U.P.; Gunasekara, H.D.E.It has become timely necessity to utilise new management concepts to increase the productivity of the television news room. New managerial concepts such as Planning, organizing, administration, leadership, motivation, assessments and encouragements, brain storming discussions, performance review and feedback are being used fully in the news sections of the developed world. Do the television news managers of Sri Lanka utilise the new managerial concepts productively? If yes, how? Inquiring the effects of the new managerial concepts on the productivity of the television news room is the aim of this research. The television news managers of Sri Lanka do not utilise the new managerial concepts effectively is the Hypothesis of the research. Interview method and participatory observation were the two main Primary data gathering methods. Planning reports, progress reports, annual reports, copies of news, shift duty roster and other files of the 6 television news rooms including documents pertaining to the subject were the secondary data gathering methods. Amongst the multiple local media, only 6 television news rooms were selected for the research while the research focused only on the new managerial concept out of the broad subject area in the management. This study found that 5 out of 6 television news rooms (83.33%) did not utilise new managerial concepts productively as a whole. Many news managers have turned to imitate international news channels and did not adhere due to managerial procedure in recruitment for news section. Managers are concentrated only on the outside training and they do not even follow an assessment procedure as per accepted managerial rules. All the news managers agreed on the quality of the news it was revealed that there are internal issues on it. Confirming the hypothesis, main conclusion was that the news section of the local televisions does not utilise the new managerial concepts productively. To offer better quality news through Television media, Television news managers should utilise new managerial concepts. It will lead for effective and productive activities in the television news section.Item Ethical Issues in Social Science Research: A Review(Department of Economics, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Madhushani, H.D.P.Research is a systematic, socially organized quest for new and better insight. ‘Research ethics’ refers to a complex set of values, standards and institutional schemes that help constitute and regulate scientific activity. Ethical issues are becoming a crucial element in social research. It is compulsory for a social researcher conducting research involving humans to apply for ethical clearance. The aims of this study were to Ethical Issues in Social Science Research in Developing Countries discussed in the literature. This review used 20 various research efforts from 1982 to 2014, using key words research, ethics, social sciences, developing countries. 60% of them mostly concerned of research ethics and ethical issues of social science research. First, significant issues regarding of research ethics were identified. Then, as a result of a literature review and case studies, it was also found that ethical issues are mostly occurred in the countries which are still developing. The research findings indicated that Complex ethical issues in such countries need careful justification by social science researchers.Item Worldwide research productivity in the field of Data Mining from 2010 to 2015: a bibliometric analysis(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Balasubramani, R.; Kohila, G.T.; ElavazhaganThe main objective of this study is to analyze the growth of the research in the category Data Mining, a subject that has arisen over the last few decades. The study also aims to compare scientific production in the field of data mining between countries and evaluate the publication trend and authorship pattern worldwide. Study analyzed publications for journals between 2010 and 2015, with an analysis from the perspective of both quantity and quality. Furthermore, we have analyzed the international dissemination of research of countries through journals and the relationship with the authorship pattern to detect the published journals of each country.We have applied RGR, LOTKA’S law and Bradford’s law in this study. This study has observed a total of 9437 publications in Data mining research over a period of six years from 2010 to 2015 and indexed by Web of Science online Database indicates that the publication output in the Global level. The highest numbers of papers were published during the year 2015 with 1846 records and the following year 2014 with 1722 records. The least number of papers was recorded during 2010 with1238records. Overall, 26166 authors contributed in 2485 journals with 2674 records of the publications from 6350 number of institutions that were located in 113 numbers of countries. The highest number of the publications on 2269 records in three author productivity and followed by the two and four author’s productivity with 2005 and 1734 records of the publications respectively. The study revealed that USA occupies top position with 2626 publications followed by Peoples R China with1534, Taiwan with 693, UK with 642, Spain with 542 and Germany with 514 records of research publications respectively. First place goes to USA with2626 publications, first rank in terms of GCS with 22962 records of 113 Countries were contributed the publications.
