An Online Course to improve Academic Writing Skills of Undergraduates.
(International Conference on the Humanities (ICH), 2017 Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2017) Gamage, A.W.M.
The rapid development of technology has dramatically affected the entire world. Since technology has influenced education, numerous scholars focus on integrating technology; Learning Management Systems, Virtual Learning Environments with education. Existing literature suggests that activities done in an online classroom reduce stress and it motivates the students to participate attentively and actively in learning (Jung & Kim, 2004) and also the online learning environment has a significant effect on the academic improvement of students (Hewagamage: 2012). Therefore, the online medium has already become an essential part of education. Thus, this study explores how undergraduates from different proficiency levels use an online learning environment to improve their academic writing skills. The online platform Edmodo was used as the method of delivery in this study. Four major areas related to academic writing; academic vocabulary, tense shift, linking words and paraphrasing were chosen and an online course was designed with four modules including extra materials and activities. Five third year students who represent different proficiency levels took part in this academic writing course. Analysis of this study indicated that students had a positive perception towards their learning environment. They engaged with all the activities given and completed the course successfully. Although a major improvement was shown in the areas of academic vocabulary, tense shift and linking words, the same level of improvement was not visible in the area of paraphrasing. Another significant finding was that although they were comfortable with the teacher and the online environment, the lack of peer interaction was clearly visible. Therefore, it can be concluded that a well-structured course and a friendly online environment were helpful for academic writing.

Difficulties faced by Undergraduates of Local Universities in reading for their degrees in English medium
(Department of English, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Sathanandan, R.; Situbandara, S.N.B.A.; Gunasinghe, D.P.D.D.; Gunasekara, M.S.T.; Navarathne, D.M.A.S.; Gunawardena, S.
The difficulty faced by undergraduates reading in English medium is a recurrent issue in Sri Lanka. After one’s tertiary education the next step is occupation. In the present context it is important for everyone to be well versed in English. Even after thirteen years of school education, most of the students have not yet gained the required proficiency in English. Until now the reasons behind this issue and solutions have not been found out. A questionnaire was distributed amongst 40 students of three faculties, including close-ended and open-ended questions in Sinhala and English. During the process of this research many articles were dwelt upon with regard to this topic, which helped in understanding the underlying causes to this impending issue. Focus was also given on the socio-economical background of the students and the methodology of lectures. The data collected from the questionnaire helped in understanding the following; most students in local universities are accustomed to their vernacular language and are unfamiliar with English. It is during lectures that they are taught in English, which many students fail to handle due to their unfamiliarity of the language. As a result many students fail their degree or lose interest in the subject. It was recommended by the students themselves that improved teaching methods must be conducted from their primary education. Language must not be a barrier for education.

Sign Language Teaching for the Hearing Disabled
(Department of Linguistics, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Thayanithy, K.
Each and every speech community, all around the world use their own and unique language to communicate with one another. Like wise the people who have hearing and speaking disabilities use the sign language as a means of communication . This study is based on the students of Nuffield at Kaithady, Jaffna. The data for this research were obtained through direct observations and conversations with the primary students of the said school. The research studies how the knowledge in sign language enables the people with hearing disabilities to access the education and to ease their communication. With the direct observations and communications it was revealed that the students face problems in their higher studies. The school has set a pass percentage to identify and observe the improvement of the students. Going through the test marks of the students who were trained to use sign language it was noted that the said students had received poor marks in exams; a result of the burred understanding of sign language. The students are being taught using sign language especially for the ordinary level examination by the trainers who come from various part of the country. Sign language has its variations limited to different areas. Consequently, this variation leaves the students confused. They also encounter some setbacks in answering the questions due to lack of knowledge in language. In order to avoid this situation they should be given a clear idea of the exam papers by the teacher who teaches them the sign language. It may ensure them a chance to follow the higher education. Here the researcher further highlights the fact that a change in the system of examination is essential benefiting the hearing disabled students.

Does the University Education System in Sri Lanka create Racism among Minority Students?
(English Language Teaching Unit, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Nayanahari, D.
Education is the stream where people gather knowledge for their lives. Knowledge is the weapon we all use for building up our own careers and it is the mastery of oneself. Knowledge should not have a medium rather it is the miscellaneous review by the educators. Knowledge should be disseminated among the people who need it in a way that everyone can simply grasp. Sri Lanka is a country which is in a post war situation where most of the things need changes to build up the mentality of the victims. Therefore, education has become a prime factor of the society, that everyone needs an equally. Hence, this study examines, “how language affects their experience as minority students in the University of Kelaniya.” However, this study is an attempt to discuss about the issues that the minority ethnic groups have to face, when they are supposed to study in a different medium and to study in a Sinhala background. The scope of this study is a general overview of the issues and ideas of the victims who are suffering due to this complication. I will conduct interviews and collect data from questionnaires and analyze the ideas of the students and this will be conducted in the university premises of Kelaniya. The questionnaire data will be analyzed statistically and discourse analysis will be used to analyze the interview data. This study will conclude by suggesting a best way to overcome from these issues.
