    An Analysis into the Understanding of University Students in the Knowledgebase on the Palm Leaf Manuscripts

    With the advancement of technology in the world, discoveries have emerged. This has resulted in many changes in the local and foreign education sectors. When it came to local education, it was clear that the indigenous qualities we inherited from the ancestors of the past should be preserved in an era of decaying age. In this case, particular attention was paid to the nationally highly valued Palm Leaf Manuscripts which anyone is not paying attention nowadays. The Palm Leaf Manuscripts contain a wealth of local knowledge related to various subject areas. The research investigates whether Sri Lankan university students were aware of Palm Leaf Manuscripts. It examined the students' understanding of why Palm Leaf Manuscripts are a locally valued heritage that should be preserved. The contribution of students from the Department of History and Archeology of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura was obtained for this purpose. Students were provided with a questionnaire to collect the data needed for the research. Data analysis showed that they had a general understanding of Palm Leaf Manuscripts.

    University Students’ Internet addiction and its effects: Special Reference to Makandura Premises WUSL

    Improvement in information and communication technology tied the world more close with internet. Internet has experience extraordinary growth in both its size and number of users around the world. Many users of the internet and its charm in recent years have led to the emergency of phenomenon known as internet addiction. A common group widely used to study internet addiction by university student. The objective of this study is to identify the internet addiction among Wayamaba University first year undergraduates. Internet addiction was measured through internet addiction test developed by young (1998). the level of internet addiction of student was defined in terms of points scored in the internet addiction test. In generally the findings of the study shows that Wayamaba University first year undergraduate who follow the degree from both faculties; Faculty of Agriculture and Plantation Management and Faculty of Livestock Fisheries and Nutrition in Makandura premises. In total 63 students of the sample was highly addicted to the internet, 101 students experiencing frequent problem with using internet for their day to day life and 219 of students are average on –line users. They surf the web a bit too long at times but have control over usage. Faculty wise addiction was 29 students of Agriculture and Plantation Management and 34 students of Faculty of Livestock Fisheries and Nutrition. There were 17 male internet adductors and 46 female adductors from the total distribution of the sample. It was further identified that students were facing many problems dealing with internet addiction such as depression moody or nervous when they are offline. Based on the result, the study suggests students should concern more on their academic activities than spending unnecessary time on the internet. University lectures would have responsibility to make student aware regarding negative consequences of internet addiction and make the students to engaging with more academic activates like group assignment, workshops, and extra activities. Also have to encourage students spend time on internet for academic purposes

    Awareness and Use of Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC)/Web OPAC by University Students of University of Kelaniya

    The Introduction of Information and Communication Technology in the field of Libraries and Information Centers has impacted on library services and library techniques such as retrieval and dissemination of information resources. It has also changed the ways of providing library services to user community. OPAC is one of the technologies which easy provide access to bibliographical information such as name of author, title, publisher, date of the publication. Although OPAC is identified as a easy and effective way to search information in the library, many users have not got relevant knowledge and skills to use OPAC. This study fulfill this gap. Main objective of this study is to identify what are the problems faced by University students when they use OPAC/Web OPAC. Moreover, this study also aim to understand knowledge and skills that required to use OPAC effectively. This study used a survey method as a research method. The population of this study consists of University students in Sri Lanka. The sample of this study represents students in the University of Kelaniya. This study used a quantitative data collection techniques. Questionnaires were distributed among the selected students in the University and 90% were responded. Descriptive statistics method (SPSS software) was used for data analysis of this study. This study found that number (69.1%) of students used OPAC as a search tool for retrieving documents. Although they knew OPAC as a computer catalogue, they do not have wide awareness about OPAC. Many students do not use all features provided by OPAC such as advance search, reserve books, search from ISBN number. Also they do not know how to search bibliographical records. Even though, the University library has provided OPAC facilities, there were some limitations i.e. not allow to copy, print and edit bibliographical data, absences of regular updating on OPAC system, unable to search terms using Sinhala and Tamil languages and longer time for connecting to OPAC. Due to these limitations students were not satisfied with OPAC services provided by the University library. Findings of this study highly useful for University library staff to provide effective OPAC facilities and thereby improve academics knowledge and skills to use OPAC effectively. For example library staff can organize qualitative instructional programs, can provide practical training on advanced searching methods and promote OPAC among University students.

    Trend in Reading Novels by the Students of Art Faculty: With Special Referee to Kelaniya, Colombo and Sri Jayawardhanapura Universities

    Printed Media has been a very closer medium to everyday personal life of people. Special feature of novel is the exposure of personal life at human kind to the society and lay person considering the view it in very valuable how far the university students are very closer to reading novels. The Objective of this study is to investigate the factors affected in minimizing the time spend for reading, type of novel reading and the number of novel rending amang University Students. What and how the trend of reading novels by the university student was the research problem of this study. The hypothesis constructed for this purpose is that is the university students of Arts faculty show a decline in reading novels. The study limited three universities in Sri Lanka namely Kelaniya" Colombo and Sri Jayawardhanapura. Population was the Art faculty students and sample was 100 students based on random sampling technology. Primary data collected using a Questionnaire and a n interview. Through this study, it collected that students in Art faculty showed a decline in reading novels. The factors for this were non closer at novels for personal life of the students, confinement of students to word study only owing to semester system, economic hardships, hectic life and restlessness, non-issue at productive and quality novels and the gradual deviation from reading novels owning to students preferences for using new media. It revealed that steps like literary discussion, criticism and discourses, literary workshops, improvement of library usage, change of attitude in reading are to be taken to make more close to reading novels by Art students.
