Item Importance of English Communication for Technological Students from Rural Areas(4th International Conference on Social Sciences 2018, Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Bandara, G.M.C.Sri Lanka is one of the developing countries with large number of rural students whom are not properly utilized. Many of the students from urban areas are having enough opportunities and qualifications to get a reasonable job. Now-a-days communication plays a major role in all sectors. Most of the students are looking for a job than gaining higher education. Employers give considerable value to graduates acquiring a diverse set of skills in different work environment. The IT revolution and globalization of business have emerged as two major factors to bring technical communication to the fore front of academia and industry. The rise and widespread use of information communication technology in the whole world making the global market and business becoming diverse and result-oriented, professionals and technocrats. However there are many more new challenges in communication every day. To be a successful technologist in this competitive environment one should not depend just only on acquiring knowledge and skills, but also need to develop effective communication skills. Mandate of the national libraries is to collect, preserve, and provide access to heritage content and materials about the nation and the wider region. In this context, libraries are introducing variety of knowledge dissemination services for their local and global community. With the invention of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), libraries nowuse different types of technologies to disseminate the knowledge. This paper investigates the recent changes to provide access to knowledge in National Libraries in developing countries. This was measured using library websites and scholarly literature focusing on information services, purposes, and recent problems. The sample consisted of 10 national libraries of developing countries. The results indicate that the ICT has become an integral part of the library.Computing technology, communication technology and mass storage technology are some of the areas of continuous development that reshape the way that libraries access, retrieve, store, manipulate and disseminate information to users. Digitization, enhance user access, legal demands, infrastructure facilities and etc could be identified as recent problems. Libraries in developed countries are highly competitive and advanced through information and communication technology. Within this competitive background many libraries in developing countries need further development strategies based on ICT to overcome these difficulties. This research provides recommendations to provide a discussion in order to modernize libraries in to the 21st century.Item Factors Influence on Knowledge of Aids among First Year Students of Eastern University, Sri Lanka(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Karthikesu, K.1Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) has a great impact on society, both as an illness and as a source of discrimination. Numerous social and behavioral factors are involved in the spread of AIDS such as prostitution, broken homes, sexual disharmony, easy money, emotional immaturity, urbanization and industrialization, changing behavioral patterns, social stigma and alcoholism. Lack of information about the causes and risk factors of AIDS can place a large number of young people at the risk of acquiring Human Immunodeficiency Virus infection (HIV). Therefore, knowledge regarding AIDS is an essential precursor of sexual risk reduction. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of socio demographic and educational related factors in the knowledge of AIDS among first year students of the Eastern University, Sri Lanka. This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out among 300 first year students of the Eastern University. Stratified random sampling method was used to select sample. Self- administered questionnaire was used to collect data. Among the 300 participants, 36.3 % were male and 63.7 % were female. 46.7 % of them were Tamil, 30 %, 20.7% and 2.7% were Sinhalese, Muslims and Burgers respectively. The mean knowledge score regarding AIDS among first year students of the Eastern University was 43.7%. Female students had higher knowledge than male students. Health care students had higher knowledge than other faculties’ students. All male and female participants were aware that AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease. There was a significant association between mean knowledge scores of AIDS and gender, area, awareness programme participation, ethnicity, faculty, stream of A/L study, and source of information obtained (p <0.05). The knowledge regarding AIDS was average among majority of first year students of the Eastern University. Knowledge about transmission methods, signs and symptoms and preventive measures of AIDS was good among all students.
