Item Factors Associated with Social Media on Consumer Adoption in Tourism (With Special reference to Kandy).(International Conference on Applied Social Statistics (ICASS) - 2019, Department of Social Statistics, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Liyanage, L.N.With the development of computer and Internet technology, social media have been widely used. During the last decade, an explosion of user-driven web technologies: blogs, social networks and media sharing platforms have been occurred. In the modern world, Social media play an important role in the consumer’s decision-making procedure. The growth of social media has led to new methods of pursuing and gaining information about various products and services in the market. It has facilitated consumers to associate and discuss different service or product providers easily (Chung and Koo, 2015). As tourism is an information-intensive industry it is necessary to understand the fluctuations or the deviations in the technologies that influence on the distribution and approachability of information regarding the travel (Xiang and Gretzel, 2010). Sri Lanka, as one of the countries with high usage of social media, has more than 6.2 million active social media users while in the world its more than 3.48 billion users. Among the most popular social media sites, Facebook gets the first place with 6 million active users, while Instagram has 1.1 million active users and Twitter has 182.5 thousand users for the last year (Hootsuite, 2019). One of the main advantage of social media is that it acts as as an effective communication media in the tourism industry were found by the authors in the literature (Desai and Eric, 2015; Verma, Stock and Mc Carthy (2012): Schu‑ ckert et al, 2015). Through these data it is cleared that social media sites are very popular in the country and it can be used as an effective tool for marketing in the field of tourism, in order to reach very large part of population. On the other hand, Sri Lanka is one of the greatest tourist destinations. The existing literature about social media generally emphases on the features of social media. However, researches about the factors associated with social media on adoption intention in of tourism sector is rare. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the factors related to social media that effect adoption intention in tourism.Item Social Science study on impact of Facebook-related interactions to individuals lives(4th International Conference on Social Sciences 2018, Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Warnakulasooriya, A.A.S.Rapid technological advances of 21st century create growth of new relationships. Power of new mass media and the social media make huge effect to the personal and social network of a human being. Today they have less time to interact with other people in physically because of their busy lifestyle. So, it is timely important to study about impact of Facebook-related interactions to individuals lives which is the main objective of the study. Other sub objectives are how do they build up the Facebook interactions and what are the reasons. The study was conducted with 50 male students and 50 female students in university of Kelaniya by using random sample method. Questionnaires were used to obtain primary data collections. Data has been analyzed by using SPSS and Excel statistical analysis software packages. According to the study all of them has built interactions using Facebook. 30% of them has built love affairs from that. Getting rid from the family, Facebook use as an alternative to resting time are the reasons for those interactions. 40% of the sample had been using Facebook once a day. 35% of the sample had been using Facebook less than one hour per day. Rest of 25% of the sample had been using Facebook for 2 hours to 4 hours per day. Research has revealed that interactions of Facebook have an impact on people’s lives. They have distant from their family and friends. 60% of the sample it was confirmed that they spend more time with Facebook-related interactions than who they physically connected. In finally, Facebook-related interactions have been identified as having a direct impact on this sample.Item The Effect of social media on political opinion of people: An analytical study based on Facebook users(4th International Conference on Social Sciences 2018, Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Shyamali, W.M.W.; Sarangi, E.M.L.N.; Wijethunga, W.T.D .Attitudes, ideas, opinion and political behavior of social media users has severely affected by social medias. Most of the political parties are using Facebook for their advertising campaign. It is a problem whether all the facts published by political parties on Facebook are true or not. Also politician may use Facebook to achieve their short slightest political purposes. Researchers have discovered that government is launching surveys via Facebook before executing government policies. Research Problem was whether Facebook will effect to change the political opinion of a person. Purpose of this research was to study the effect by Facebook on political opinion of a person. 575 of Facebook Users who age between twenty and thirty have chosen from Monaragala district under simple Purposive Sampling method to collect data for the study through online questionnaire. Their profiles have observed for further confirmation. Accordingly, it is recognized that 63.89% of them were have not stable opinion on political situation. 75% of them stated that their opinion on politics have changed due to the posts on Facebook. 30.56% of this 75% stated that the reason for this as the disclosing fraudulent activities of politicians by Facebook pages. 30.56% from the total sample has posted posts which included opinions on political on their Facebook profiles. 38.89% from total sample stated that they have liked such Facebook pages. Therefore, social medias such as Facebook is making a severe effect on changing the political opinion of a person. It is necessary to take preventive actions for misleading posts on Facebook. According to there revelations, it is necessary to take preventive actions for illegal misuse on FacebookItem Perception and Utilization of Social Networking Sites among the Research Scholars of Library and Information Science in Tamil Nadu(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Kavitha, E.S.; Uma, T.Social Networking refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks. This study aimed to study the purpose and benefits of using the SNS, and also wants to flash light on regularity of using SNS for various entertainments, academic and Information sharing by the research scholars of Library and Information Science. A structured questionnaire was designed and randomly distributed to 85 research scholars of Library and Information Science in Tamil Nadu. After collecting the data, SPSS 16 Software was employed for the analysis. Percentage analysis, Mean, SD, MANCOVA test were used to show the interrelationship between variables. PhD scholars are only giving more importance on sharing of information for various purposes compared with updating their professional related activities. It is significant to know that the research scholars are benefited by SNS for research through e-learning process and make new friendship. Majorities of the research scholars have been using the Google Scholars, Academic.edu for information sharing such in citation, publication and knowledge sharing. It is pathetic to mention that more number of research scholars are not aware of Research Gate, citation sites such as Mendeley and Zotero. Factors like the age of the research scholars and their seriousness of Library Science play an important role in the application of SNS for entertainment purpose. It is also highlighted that M.Phil and Ph.D scholars of Library and Information Science use SNS for academic purpose. What this paper wants to highlight on is, on the difference in sharing the kind of information among the M.Phil and Ph.D Scholars.Item Use and economic burden of Social Network: Evidence from Government Employees in Sri Lanka(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Balasooriya, N.N.Social media influences various sector in the society and provide certain social benefits as well as costs. Especially it affects the company productivity. Thereby this study was carried out with the objective of identity the pattern of social network usage and measuring its economic burden among government employees. As the sample 143 government servants were selected using two-stage cluster sampling method and structured interview method was used to collect data. Fishers’ Exact Test, and frequency analysis were employed to analysis the data. the study discovered that 86.6% of government employees in Sri Lanka have at least registered one social network site and wasted time due to social network usage per employee of Top level Managers, Middle level Managers , Executive Level and Non-Executive are 56.25, 63.33, 47,51 and 45.33 minutes per day respectively . Economic loss caused by that wasted time is per head 168.32 rupees per day. Thereby government organizations should create their own set of rules, guidelines and policies to reduce the wasted time. Also monitoring the employee behaviour on SNSs is a better way to effectively manage the use of SNSs by government employees.
