Today libraries are experimenting on with how to market library services and information products through established and emerging online platforms. Emerging citizen journalism and new media information marketing encompasses different mediums, including display advertising, content marketing, mobile apps and social media promotions. The crucial objective of this new strategy is how best libraries can reach their users, service impact and attracting users to library brand. Even though libraries are pro-actively engulfing these new online platforms in several areas of library such as library communications, marketing of information, brand creation, impact analysis etc., there are several other untouched areas which need to be tested and tried to exploit full potential of new media.Item Social Networks and Medias towards Searching Scholarly Information among Social Science Research Scholars in the State Universities of Tamilnadu(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Baskaran, C.The purpose of the study analyses about disseminating Scholarly information through Social Networks among the respondents in selected five Universities in Tamilnadu. The recorded that 87 (25.14%) of them were Annamalai University and the majority of the respondents 73 (21.10%) of them were Alagappa University. The majority 97 (28.03%) of the respondents belong to the department of Management/Commerce, 58 (16.76%) were from the department of Education /Physical Education and 38 (10.98%) were from the department History /Geography. The study witnessing that 291 (84.10%) of the respondents belong to aware and use of What Sapp and 55 (15.90%) of the respondents belong not using What Sapp. It finds that 163 (47.11%) of respondents were preferred Ref.Works and 183 (52.89%) of respondents not prefer. 163 (47.11%) of respondents preferred Reference Management Software Ref.Works and 183 (52.89%) of respondents not preferredItem A Study about E- Government Services and Its Usage Provide by Sri Lanka Government to Citizens Specifically on Three Services.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Shyamali, P.T.C.E government refers to the use of Information and communication technology give to provide citizens with more convenient access to the government’s services and information. As the usage of Information technology is growing fast, Sri Lankan government is making many efforts to provide services to its citizens through e government. In 2007, Sri Lanka government was adopted e government policy and then launched e government project with support of Sri Lanka Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA). There are many e government services which delivered by Sri Lankan e government to its citizens. Among these e government services selected three e services which most important to citizens in their day today life. Those are online exam result services, online vehicle license service and online train schedule service to this research. Sri Lankan government is spending lot of money one government project. The purpose of the research is study about the usage of e government service in rural areas. The method of this research is interviews and questionnaire. The data collection-using questionnaire from 300 people who lived in Benthota Divisional Secretariat Division. How the communities use e government services is surveyed. Their awareness, attitudes also studied. It is also expected to study the facilities and provisions of e government services available in those intuitions attached to Benthota Divisional Secretariat Division.Item Usage of E-Government Services Provided by Sri Lankan Government for Citizen.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Darsha, T.D.H.Increase the people’s participation of all the government affairs using the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and new Medias, creates a good governance. Provisions of all the needy services of people and working continuously with those to build a better connection with them through all the means ICTs is called as e-government services. Information of any given country is a resource, which directly affect the all civilians. E-government services are developed to offer government services quickly and accurately for the public. The e-government services policy formulated by Sri Lankan government and implemented with a joint effort by Information and Communication Technology Agency office attached to government of Sri Lanka. The purpose of the study is to survey on the poor awareness of the public on e-services offered by the government. The principal objective of this study is to investigate the use of e government services provided by Sri Lankan government to the public. The data will be collected by selecting a random sample from the scholars in the field of education using categories like physicians, lawyers, academic staff of universities and the teachers. It is expected to choose 50 scholars from each of the above mentioned filed. Data will be collected by questionnaire and interview methods. Excel and SPSS software will be used in the data analysis. The tendency of public towards the usage of Sri Lankan e-government services could be increased with the results of the study.Item Automatic Extractive Twitter Hashtag Summarization(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Hengodage, M.A.; Samankula, W.G.D.M.During past years, social media content has been widely used for many purposes, fields. Large amounts of content are generated in these social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn in every day. Twitter has large sets of data which is limited to 140 words, unlike any other social media platforms. Twitter allows a huge number of users to contribute frequent short messages. The content is an extraordinarily large number of small textual messages that are posted by millions of users. Twitter has topics system which enables the user to check about public opinion using with particular hashtags. Twitter websites’ content was focused in this research. This trending topic changes daily, even it changes based on locations. Each country has a different set of trends. But the major problem is for recognizing these hashtags for the users who are not very active on twitter websites. Some hashtags self-explain themselves with the words being used but not all of them. This project gives the ability to summarize idea about particular hashtag. A hashtag summarizer was implemented in order to address this problem. Creating hashtag summarizer may give the foundation to address previously mentioned issues about hashtags. This implemented system has some additional features other than hashtag summarization, for an instance user may use it to quickly check updates about some live event going on with its hashtag keyword. This solution provide some options to fine tune the results of summarization. In the summarisation process, all the related posts for given hashtag are considered. Then emoji’s and non-ascii characters are removed from the imported text data. The data is sent to the summarizer after cleaning up the characters. Then summarizer associates the words with their grammartical counterpart. Considering the frequency, each word is ranked with points system. Furthermore, by end of the sentences taking into the account, summariser splits the text into sentences. At the end of the process, sentences are ranked by sum of their words’ points. Then, it returns the highly ranked sentences.Item Effective Utilization of Social Media by Students of University of Madras, Chennai: A Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Arumugam, J.; Natarajan, N.O.; Balasubramani, R.Social media has grown fast, becoming very popular among the student environment. It is mainly used for sharing academic information and public communication in India. Technology has penetrated all areas of life and the use of information technology (IT) has promoted incredible work procedures and approaches. The present study examines the academic use of social media on the quality of education and research among students of University of Madras, Chennai. The study revealed that majority of the social media users used Face book. They used social media for developing academic relationships and for sharing their learning experiences with their colleagues and international community. They faced problems of bandwidth and speed of internet and security. The researchers recommended that proper training may be organized for appropriate use social media.Item Use and economic burden of Social Network: Evidence from Government Employees in Sri Lanka(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Balasooriya, N.N.Social media influences various sector in the society and provide certain social benefits as well as costs. Especially it affects the company productivity. Thereby this study was carried out with the objective of identity the pattern of social network usage and measuring its economic burden among government employees. As the sample 143 government servants were selected using two-stage cluster sampling method and structured interview method was used to collect data. Fishers’ Exact Test, and frequency analysis were employed to analysis the data. the study discovered that 86.6% of government employees in Sri Lanka have at least registered one social network site and wasted time due to social network usage per employee of Top level Managers, Middle level Managers , Executive Level and Non-Executive are 56.25, 63.33, 47,51 and 45.33 minutes per day respectively . Economic loss caused by that wasted time is per head 168.32 rupees per day. Thereby government organizations should create their own set of rules, guidelines and policies to reduce the wasted time. Also monitoring the employee behaviour on SNSs is a better way to effectively manage the use of SNSs by government employees.
