Item Continuous Professional Development Programs Conducted by the Public Libraries in Sri Lanka: a Study based on Selected Public libraries in Western and Uva Provinces(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Senarathna, K.I.D.This paper is an attempt to study the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Programs in public libraries in Sri Lanka. Continuous Professional Development the means by which members of respective profession develop, maintain, improve, and broaden their knowledge and skills and develop the personal qualities required to uplift their professional development. The principal purpose of the study is to examine the status of participation of public librarians for the Continuous Professional Development Programs in Sri Lanka. The other objectives are to explore what is the level of participation of public librarians in CPD, to identify the institutions offering CPD programs, to identify what are the most productive and effective CPD programs which are very fitting to public libraries and librarians and to explore the basic benefits of CPD and to investigate its performances. Method of the study is the survey research. The research studied under selected Municipal councils, Urban Councils including Pradeshiya Sabha, in Western and Uva provinces and the libraries selected in the grades 1st, 2nd, and 3rd as based on the criteria laid down by the National Library and Documentation Services Board, Sri Lanka. Primary data will be collected through site visit, discussion followed by the observation both participatory and non-participatory. Further data would be collected using two separate questionnaires focusing the librarians and resource persons and the concerned institutions. For collecting the secondary data, web site and data and statistical reports of the Ministry of Local Government and provincial council are used. The research information will be presented on what is the CPD, why is it needed, how public librarians would participate for the CPD Programs. The attentions will be given who will support for the public librarians in the process, what are new CPD programs to be introduced, what are new tendencies, problems, and challenges of these CPD programs. Accordingly, based on the survey data findings and conclusions will be drawn for the future betterment of the relevant filed and the CPD.Item Human Libraries in India(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Sharda, P.; Rao, P.V.Library is a place where readers go to study and borrow books which they want to read. They read the way the book is written. A new concept of Human Library emerged in the year 2000 in Roskilde Festival by Copenhagen, Denmark by Ronni Abergel. It is in an attempt to enforce social change and encourage conversation around marginalised communities. The first permanent Human Library was established in Lismore, Australia in 2006 . Human Library is a place where real people are on loan to readers. A place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered. The concept is similar to that of a traditional library. If a book is read and discussed or shared among like-minded readers, the Human Library has people engaging in conversations. Like books, participants of the Human Library can be picked from a list to engage in conversations and share stories on a one on one basis. A couple of readers opting for the same living book or even with a group. The Human Library movement has expanded to around 80 countries. In India, it was introduced in Hyderabad, then made its way to Mumbai, before coming to New Delhi. This paper discusses the concept of Human Library in detail. The paper also highlights the major human libraries of India. Human libraries are spreading their arms all over the country, this paper is an attempt to trace the development of Human libraries in cities of India. It also provides an insight that how these library work, how living books are registered, how the events are organized and how funds are raised for the events.Item Good Practice of Reshaping a School Library: with Special Reference to Vidyartha Navodya Maha Vidyalaya, Pahalamaragawewa in Anuradapur(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Harshani, K.R.N.; Siriwardana, A.S.This article seeks out to bring to light some of the huge achievements, best practices in reshaping school library through creative initiatives. The school library is fundamental to the learning and teaching development. A library is a significant source of knowledge to students in schools. In this research mainly focused on reshape present library in Vidyartha Navodya Maha Vidyalaya. Case study was adopted for this study. This paper details how one school transformed its school library, making it a central place for reading within the school. Data collected provided evidence of the kinds of strategies, programmes and design that works to encourage reading skills. In this research mainly focused on designing attractive spaces for reading environment. Researchers had a typical planning cycle to implement and set up this library efficiency, effective and creative manner namely assessing needs, planning improvement of library get their achievement, with that help of principle, librarian, prefect of schools (grade 6-12) with teachers of school library. Best practices included workshop with staff training, and activity basis ideas. Setting up a library is also a great challenge. It is necessary to recommend that work closely with many other people at in school. In this way the library will belongs to everyone at the school and can be made to benefit many generations of students. Library delivers a student with necessary additional material and extra reading. It progresses the important habit of reading between the students and school library shows a great part in the life of students by helping as the store house of knowledge. Today’s school librarians must effort harder than ever to demonstrate their value to educators, students, administrators. Consequently, the role of encouragement in school librarianship is serious. This paper provides a brief idea the way of school library have transformed, identifies some of the challenges school librarians face, and suggestions one best practice that can support school librarians advocate for themselves and for efficient and effective school library arrangement. This research shows that the more successful outcomes happened in schools where the entire creative process between school children and member teachers of project team. Thus skills acquired by a librarian persuades library’s efficacy and Competencies are the set of talents needed to achieve the role of LIS Professional by applying the skills to cope with the rapidly changing world.Item History and Development of Library Education in Sri Lanka: With Speed Reference to the Period after 1948(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Udarini, D.N.A.U.C.Information and Information services play a significant role in the development of a country. Professionally trained, experienced and qualified personal needed for the provision of information services in a country. Hence library education system has been evolved in other countries as well as in Sri Lanka for this purpose. The fundamental problem related to library education is the evolvement of library education on non-formal base. The principal objective of this paper is to explore the history and development of library education in Sri Lanka. Based on the hypothesis the “Slow growth is the basic feature of Sri Lanka library education”, the other objectives formulated were to investigate Sri Lankan library education movement based on historical record of after 1948, to examine the institution and resources persons contributed library education and to identify the problems related library education. It was identified the real growth of library education started after 1950 and one of the key features is the formation of several school of thoughts. The slow growth pattern is the other principal feature. Fundamental problems identified were the non-availability of standardization and quality assurances on a library education at national level as well as non-availability of a responsible coordination organization for developing unique criteria and policies on library education in Sri Lanka. The fore suggestions are mode introduce and start library education standards, quality assurance all accreditation, making strategies for the cooperation all the coordination of library education institutions and programs, introducing new code of ethic and conduct for the speedy development of library education in Sri Lanka.
