Item The study on Internet information searching and retrieval: with reference to management undergraduate students in University of Kelaniya(4th National Research Conference on Applied Social Statistics, Social Statistics Students’ Association, Department of Social Statistics, Faculty of Social Science, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Dharamarathne, B.A.N.D.The internet is a network of global exchanges including private, public, business, academic and government networks and the internet is a collection of Computer networks connected to each other and share information interactively. At present, most of students in universities use Internet their educational information needs. However, as informed by literature, students face difficulties when they use Internet technology for information searching and retrieving particular information. This study used survey research method. This study selected 100 final year undergraduate from the Faculty of Management as a study sample. Quantitative data is collected through a structured Questionnaire while Qualitative data were collected through interviews. Secondary data was also used in this study. Collected data were analyzed by using MS Excel.This study found number of issues which are faced by undergraduates when they search and retrieve information in the internet. It way mainly idenify that students have lack of technical skills. It is recommended that more awareness programmes and hand on trainings should be arranged for the faculties identifiedItem Analysis on Using Colour Psychology in Political Communication(4th National Research Conference on Applied Social Statistics, Social Statistics Students’ Association, Department of Social Statistics, Faculty of Social Science, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Perera, U.L.H.D.“Communication” is a Latin word which means “to share”. When simply describes it means sending and receiving information between two or more people. It includes the sharing of ideas, concepts, imaginations, behaviours and written content. There are three major steps in communication. Those are as, thought, encoding and decoding. The thought means, the subject of the information which is in senders mind. When the idea or the concept go through as a verbal or written message for another person then it define as encoding. After the message is received by the receiver, he/she read it and understands it. He may translate the information to better understand it. So decoding refers to the interpretation of information from the perspective of the receiver. There are two types in communication as verbal and non-verbal. Verbal communication means sharing information through speech. Non-verbal communication means, sharing ideas between two without using words. Non –verbal communication includes with eye contact, postures, gestures, facial expressions, and Chromatics. However, when communication came to the political communication it means, a process that includes political institutions and actors, the news media and, importantly citizens. There are three key players of political communication as, leaders, media and public. Political communication can be harnessed for positive and negative purposes. However Chromatics its mean colours are most powerful and important communication tool and it is interact with religious, cultural, political and social influences. In the present era colours are playing a considerable role in political communication and also it influenced for political phenomenas. Also the message that communicate for the society by colours are various from country to country. As an example in China, red is a symbol of good luck. In South Africa, red is symbolic of mourning. If you’re “in the red” on Wall Street, you’re losing money. In Jamaica, if you’re red, you’re drunk. In U.S. politics, Red is using by Republican Party. Worldwide, red is the color of communism. However, above brief introduction express that colours are more powerful in political communication. Anyhow, main objective of this paper is to analyze on using colour psychology in political communication. This study is based on secondary data which obtain by scholarly articles, books, reports and other sources. Also content analysis used as for the methodogy. Many of the students from urban areas are having enough opportunities and qualifications to get a reasonable job. Now-a-days communication plays a major role in all sectors. Most of the students are looking for a job than gaining higher education. Employers give considerable value to graduates acquiring a diverse set of skills in different work environment. The IT revolution and globalization of business have emerged as two major factors to bring technical communication to the fore front of academia and industry. This paper aims to improve the communication skills of technological students of rural areas and encourage them to improve their communicationItem Developing Reading Habits and Literacy Attitude of Women Readers: A Special Reference at Navarasam College of Arts and Science College for Women.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Natarajan, N.O.; Subha, S.The study aims at investigating the women students reading habits and literacy attitude of Navarasam College of arts and Science College for Women, Erode, TamilnaduReading habit is an essential life skill to be impacted by an academic library to its users customers like students and the staff. It will increase knowledge, build maturity and character, sharpen thinking, and widen awareness in social, economic, political, and environmental issues. It will increase usage. It will have positive effects in life and also increases the creativity. This paper also discusses different activities of library of at Navarasam College of arts and Science College for Womenwhich help the students improve in their reading skills. Library orientation talk, reader’s club, book and journal review, project and creative work, reading and reflection, book fair, newspaper reading and quiz, inter library membership and competition, best user award etc help to develop the reading skill of the students.The above activities have increased the reading skill in students and increased the users of the library. 120 students regularly visit the library. It also aims to identify the respondents' preferred time, language and time spent on reading .The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The questionnaire was used as a tool for data collection. The results obtained revealed that 52.01% women read the books to develop life. 77% of the respondents preferred text books to read and 41% opined that subject is deciding factor to read a book. Majority of the respondents (82.15%) preferred to read English medium books. The study also reported that 65% of the respondents using internet to read online information, news, e -books, magazines and journals.Item Usage of E - Resource for Academic Purposes among the University Temporary staff: special reference with faculty of social sciences, University of Kelaniya(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Sewwandi, H.K.I.; Jayawardana, M.C.N.; Wimalawansha, B.G.U.N.Electronic Resources have become a necessity in the modern information society. Today information and communication technology has given more opportunities for the information seekers, scholars and researchers. This new trend has changed expanded and added value to the library collections as well as has widened the scope of the library user communities. E Resource comes with various forms such as E- books, E-Journals, E-Databases etc. Through the electronic media temporary academic staff makes aware himself with the current information and updates. The study investigated the usage of E-resources by the Temporary staff. The objectives of the study were to examine how the university temporary staff search required information through the e-resources and how they use e-resources for their academic purposes. Structured questionnaires were distributed among all the temporary staff in the Faculty of Social Science, University of Kelaniya. Questionnaire was the main data gathering method. It was identified that from the total population only 74% use electronic media for their academic works. According to the results 40% percent of temporary staff uses e-books to search information, 15% percent use online databases and 19% Percent of students use e-Journals. 26% Percent of staff didn‘t appear to use electronic media for their academic purposes. Major Reason for this issue is staff used to go for the university library for search information without electronic concept. Other Problems were lack of awareness about electronic media, Connection problems Suggestions were made to conduct training sessions, workshops in order to awareness among stakeholders.Item Awareness and Usage of Smartphone Applications for Information Sharing Tasks among the Research Scholars of Periyar University- An Analytical Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Gomath, P.; Rubinandhini, A.Smart phone has been spread among the world wide to day. A smartphone is a mobile phone running a complete operating system in a manner similar to a traditional computer, which offers advanced computing abilities and connectivity options. A smart phone is a cellular telephone with an integrated computer and other features not originally associated with telephones, such as an operating system, Web browsing and the ability to run software applications. The Smartphone apps are defined as software applications for use on mobile devices and made available through the app store. Globally, there has been much research done on the mobile applications. They may include education apps, games, diaries, planners, maps and more. These features enable new kinds of mobile services that in turn shape the usage habits of smart phone users. This paper surveyed the “Awareness and usage of Smartphone Applications for information sharing tasks among the research scholars of Periyar University- An analytical study. It examines the students Smart phone usage and how it affects them and role of Smart phones play in their studies. Questionnaires were designed and sent out to 240 respondents of the Ph.Dscholars in various departments of Periyar University, Salem. Out of the 240 questionnaires distributed, 237 were completely filled and returned back, giving a return rate of 99%. The data have been collected using simple random sampling methods. The data collected were analyzed using frequencies; percentages and graph representations. It was recommended that students should learn to manage their time properly and to promote the learning process.The study mainly addresses of the department wise users, gender wise, the purpose of using a smartphone, time spend, type of smartphone usage, usefulness and problems in using smartphone applications.Item Contribution of National Libraries in Dissemination of Knowledge in Developing Countries: Challenges and Opportunities(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Dilinika, J.M.S.National libraries play a vital role as knowledge centers for their nations. Mandate of the national libraries is to collect, preserve, and provide access to heritage content and materials about the nation and the wider region. In this context, libraries are introducing variety of knowledge dissemination services for their local and global community. With the invention of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), libraries nowuse different types of technologies to disseminate the knowledge. This paper investigates the recent changes to provide access to knowledge in National Libraries in developing countries. This was measured using library websites and scholarly literature focusing on information services, purposes, and recent problems. The sample consisted of 10 national libraries of developing countries. The results indicate that the ICT has become an integral part of the library.Computing technology, communication technology and mass storage technology are some of the areas of continuous development that reshape the way that libraries access, retrieve, store, manipulate and disseminate information to users. Digitization, enhance user access, legal demands, infrastructure facilities and etc could be identified as recent problems. Libraries in developed countries are highly competitive and advanced through information and communication technology. Within this competitive background many libraries in developing countries need further development strategies based on ICT to overcome these difficulties. This research provides recommendations to provide a discussion in order to modernize libraries in to the 21st century.Item A study of newspaper libraries in Sri Lanka (Specifically Lakehouse library)(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Pushapakanthi, K.S.This research is totally dedicated to find out whether the existing media libraries are sufficiently capable of serving this purpose .Throughout the research much effort was taken to study the ways and means by which the libraries can help to reach this goal .One other objective of the research was to look in to both success and failure of the services provided by so called libraries. Questionaires, written reports, interviews, and personal observations were the methodologies used to collect data .A sample of one hundred media personnel who make use of the Lake House Media Library was selected for the research .Various types of needs the journalists have in finding their required information were recognized by analysing the data gathered. Further, the findings revealed that the Lake House Media Library has the strength to satisfy the wants and needs of journalists who seek its services and most of such institutions have not taken steps to provide their users, the media people, with an acceptable media library service. This research paved a clear way to understand the value of providing the journalists with information they need and to recognize systamatic steps to follow . Accordingly, educating the readers by means of sufficient facilities for quick access to sources of information, deploying sufficient numbers of efficient employees at libraries,maintaining a website on each library, using leaflets or some other effective tool to assist readers who visit the place for information, providing the library with internet facility, enhancing the reader educating systems, computerising the photographs with news value and educating the readers through work shops and seminars can be proposed to overcome the existing lapses .
