Item Use of Information Communication Technologies for the Conservation and the Propagation of Sri Lankan Indigenous Medicine(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Ransara, P.W.A.S.D.Sri Lankan Indigenous Medicine (IM) is a science of from its existence. It is not a transmission of theoretical knowledge, but a practical set of rules, norms and a proper knowledge system that help to preserve and maintain the well-being of the body and the soul of people. Dissemination of Indigenous Medical knowledge through modern ICT while preserving it with latest technological know-how is time important. Accordingly, the research will be an exploratory study of the uses of ICT for the preservation and the propagation of indigenous medicine in Sri Lanka. The main purpose of this paper is to study the role of ICT in the preservation and dissemination of indigenous medical knowledge in Sri Lanka. In addition to that, the study focusses on identifying the attitude of IM doctors towards the use of information technology for the conservation and propagation of Sri Lankan indigenous medical knowledge, identifying information technology issues facing in conservation and propagation of IM, exploring traditional medical generations and genealogies in Sri Lanka, studying the measures to be taken by the government for the conservation and propagation of Sri Lankan indigenous medical knowledge and examining its current strategies for conservation and propagation. In this study, the selected key IM generations using the latest information technology initiatives will be surveyed and focus will be given for the latest trends in propagation for indigenous medical knowledge and methods for conservation of indigenous medicine. This method used a survey method based on the qualitative research which is a peer reviewed study on the use of ICT strategies for the conservation and propagation of indigenous medicine. Generations of doctors in Sri Lanka in the subject will be used as the sample. Data will be collected using snowball sampling, comprised of 10 each. Data collection is done through interviews and observation. Data are collected through interviews under the chief medical practioners.Item Disaster Management in Libraries: a Study based on the Museum Library of Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Amarasooriya, Y.W.N.D.As far as human history is concerned, disasters have been occurred simultaneously and the libraries evolved in the society faced the same disaster issues that have been damaged to intellectual resources owing to the fact. Although disaster management plans have been prepared in collaboration with disaster management experts in many countries around the world to prevent and respond to such incidents, libraries in Sri Lanka are still not satisfied with disaster management's interest, contribution and the workload. The main objective of this study is to identify the physical resources and human resources which are vulnerable for disasters of the Museum Library of Sri Lanka and disaster management activities and to present a suitable disaster management plan. Other objectives of this study are to investigate why the management of the institute was not interested in developing a disaster management plan and to educate the library professionals on disaster management. The Museum Library of Sri Lanka is used as the sample. Techniques like the observation and interviews are used to gather primary data for the research. Data analysis is carried out using the Excel software. A disaster management plan can be proposed for the libraries to face any challenge and to prevent disasters. In that plan, preventing the disasters, main preparedness, responding, and reconciling are the components of such a plan. These factors are taken into account in the Disaster Management Planning Proposal for the Sri Lanka Museum Library.Item Digital Preservation Strategies at the University of Peradeniya Library.(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Maheswaran, R.The purpose of this paper is to provide an account of digital archiving and preservation practices and processes successfully implemented at the University of Peradeniya Library. This Library Digital Preservation is the Process for maintenance of Digital Resources over the long-term with a view to ensure sustained accessibility. The scope of the Digital Preservation, which started with faculty research papers, has been enhanced to accommodate research papers, speeches/lectures, office orders/memorandums, videos, annual reports and the in-house database. It also tried to explain all the aspects with a practical approach that are planned for digital preservation for its research publications and other collectionsItem The Impact of Recent Flood Hazard on the Public Libraries in Sri Lanka: A Survey.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Wickramasinghe, W.P.D.Disaster is an incident which can be caused or produced by two main factors are like man-made and natural. This paper demonstrates the damaged suffered by public libraries of Kalutara and Ratnapura districts during May and early June 2017 floods. Other objectives are to investigate the actions being taken by librarians during and after the floods in those two areas and to examine how far the librarians ready to face natural disasters in the future. Nine public libraries were used to collect the primary data from Kalutara and Ratnapura districts. Two public libraries in Kalutara district-Tebuwana and Neboda and other seven public libraries in Ratnapura district- and they are Madduwa, Muwagama, Batugedara, Devalayagawa, Polhengoda, Dammulla, and Pathakada public library. The sample of this study involves librarians or their assignees of those inundated libraries and the questions consist of open-ended and the respondents were required to answer freely. Relevant data were collected from them by conducting a telephone interview. The collected data were analyzed and tabulated as per the set of objectives of the study. Among all libraries, disaster management teams have not been appointed yet and they do not possess duly prepared disaster plans yet. The study revealed a number of strategies are there to be implemented to ensure effective disaster management process which include a proper training on conservation and preservation, disaster management and planning, to use modern Information Communication Technologies, particularly the social media for the prevention, getting ready, pay attention and to have necessary skills and competencies in the deliberated area.Item Conservation and Preservation of Information Resources in Libraries: New Challenges.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Dilrukshi, U.T.L.; Dayananda, A.P.M.M.D.B.This paper discusses the importance and need of conservation and preservation of information resources in libraries, factors that affect degradation and deterioration of library materials and methods of tackling them. Libraries particularly, it examined the overview of preservation and conservation of library resources. It also studied the causes of deterioration of library information resources, among which are: natural aging process, level of use of library materials, inherent chemical content used in the process of paper making, high temperature and fluctuating relative humidity, improper handling of library materials among many others were equally discussed. Various preventive measures were equally discussed. Different challenges facing preservation and conservation of library resources in Sri Lankan Libraries were presented. Useful suggestions were also made to ameliorate the situation.Item A study on paintings at Pokunuwita Kithsirimewan Rajamaha Viharaya(University of Kelaniya, 2013) Embuldeniya, P.Pokunuwita Kithsirimewan Rajamaha Viharaya is a protected monument which has great significance from historical and archaeological aspects. It is located in the Pokunuwita village, Horana division (Kalutara District, Western Province). The ancient image house which has paintings is of great significance throughout archaeological remains at this temple. This ancient image house dates to the last part of Kandyan period based the architecture, sculptures and paintings. Inside the sanctum (Garbha gruhaya) of image house is a seated sculpture of Lord Buddha, two standing sculptures of Lord Buddha, standing sculptures of God Vishnu and God Sumana Saman and paintings of Buddhist monks, God Gambhara and God Katharagama. Also there are paintings of unclear human figures. The outer walls of the sanctum (Garbha gruhaya) of this image house has painting of Suvisi vivaranaya (Twenty-four vivaranas), Thelapaththa jathakaya and Vine motifs (Liyawela). Apart from that there are some paintings at the wooden door of this image house, Further there are paintings of traditional Sinhala decorative motifs related to the part of floral motifs (Udbidha) and geometric motifs (Nirjeewa). This study is based on field research method and library survey method. Therefore the field research method is highly emphasized to record the paintings. In the present day the paintings at this temple are highly weathered and some parts cannot be identified. So in this paper an attempt is made to describe the importance of the conservation of this painting, colours, lines and other features of these paintings.
