Item Developing Reading Habits and Literacy Attitude of Women Readers: A Special Reference at Navarasam College of Arts and Science College for Women.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Natarajan, N.O.; Subha, S.The study aims at investigating the women students reading habits and literacy attitude of Navarasam College of arts and Science College for Women, Erode, TamilnaduReading habit is an essential life skill to be impacted by an academic library to its users customers like students and the staff. It will increase knowledge, build maturity and character, sharpen thinking, and widen awareness in social, economic, political, and environmental issues. It will increase usage. It will have positive effects in life and also increases the creativity. This paper also discusses different activities of library of at Navarasam College of arts and Science College for Womenwhich help the students improve in their reading skills. Library orientation talk, reader’s club, book and journal review, project and creative work, reading and reflection, book fair, newspaper reading and quiz, inter library membership and competition, best user award etc help to develop the reading skill of the students.The above activities have increased the reading skill in students and increased the users of the library. 120 students regularly visit the library. It also aims to identify the respondents' preferred time, language and time spent on reading .The descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The questionnaire was used as a tool for data collection. The results obtained revealed that 52.01% women read the books to develop life. 77% of the respondents preferred text books to read and 41% opined that subject is deciding factor to read a book. Majority of the respondents (82.15%) preferred to read English medium books. The study also reported that 65% of the respondents using internet to read online information, news, e -books, magazines and journals.Item Professional Development of Library and Information Science (LIS) Professionals in Annamalai University: A Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Natarajan, N.O.This Paperthrows lightonthe professional development opportunities of library professionals (LIS) in the Annamalai Universities, Tamil Nadu, and India. The aim of the study is to evaluate the professional development activities of Library professionals and their attitude towards continuing education programmes. In order to achieve the objectives of the study a survey was conducted with the help of structured questionnaires distributed to 125 library professionals in Annamalai university, Tamil Nadu, India of which 100 questionnaires were returned. Results of the analysis show that majority of the professionals have pursued higher degrees in library science courses after entering the profession, and that they have a positive attitude towards participation in training programmes and workshops. The results show that developments in ICT have a positive influence on majority of library professionals‘ attitude towards continuing education programmes.Item Growth of Library Science Education and Continuing Professional Development for Library Professionals in State University Libraries in Tamil Nadu: A Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Natarajan, N.O.The aim and Purpose of the present Study is to investigate the predominant scenario of library and Information Science (LIS) Education system in Tamil Nadu to focus about the courses offered, qualitative education in the discipline of library and information science. To find out the effectiveness of the training programmes for State University Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals and various aspects of Continuous Professional Development (CPD) in the State Universities, Tamil Nadu, India. The findings of the study reveal that most of the professionals do have a positive look on CPD activities and satisfied with the effectiveness of training programmes particularly on, on-the- job training. In-house training will improve their job performance and prefer to develop new services from what they had learned. The ideal duration for CPD courses should be one week is what the research shows. Institutional problem is the major issue in participation of CPD activities. This study is the first of its kind dealing with effectiveness of CPD programmes for LIS professionals in the State Universities, Tamil Nadu, India.Item Effective Utilization of Social Media by Students of University of Madras, Chennai: A Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Arumugam, J.; Natarajan, N.O.; Balasubramani, R.Social media has grown fast, becoming very popular among the student environment. It is mainly used for sharing academic information and public communication in India. Technology has penetrated all areas of life and the use of information technology (IT) has promoted incredible work procedures and approaches. The present study examines the academic use of social media on the quality of education and research among students of University of Madras, Chennai. The study revealed that majority of the social media users used Face book. They used social media for developing academic relationships and for sharing their learning experiences with their colleagues and international community. They faced problems of bandwidth and speed of internet and security. The researchers recommended that proper training may be organized for appropriate use social media.
