Item A Study on ‘Lotus Culture’ in India.(Department of Hindi Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2016) Yasarathna, Hasitha Buddhini.Lotus (Kamal) is a common perennial aquatic herb growing in tanks, marshes, ponds, lakes and other water bodies. It is the national flower of India. Lotus is one of the most celebrated flowers with a history of over 5000 years, frequently mentioned in Hindu and Buddhist art and literature. Not like in Sri Lanka there is a big traditional sub culture which is related to lotus, in India. So this research will be a path to make aware of people about the ‘Lotus Culture’ in India. From Intra - Textual Readings, and discussions with resource persons, research has got a lot of data about this lotus culture. When analyzing all the facts research found a large number of myths which are related to this lotus culture and also there is a unique food culture which belongs to the lotus. Lotus is grown and consumed throughout Asia, as medicine, beauty cultural ingredients, food items and garnishing items. Lotus is considered as a religious symbol. According to this research lotus plays an important place in Hindu life. And also many myths concerning Lotus (Kamal) prevail in India. Kamal is essential to bring prosperity, happiness and good fortune. The research will make people aware about this traditional lotus culture of Hindus in India.Item An Analytical Study on the Ability to Use and Understand Hindi Language of University Students.(Department of Hindi Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2016) Madhubhashani, J.L.A.U.Language is considered as a core factor in communication and it is the ability to acquire and use complex systems of communication. However in the present categorization, of languages the Hindi language is considered as an inanimate (death) language. Nevertheless this belief cannot be considered as accurate, because Hindi is a very popular language especially among Sri Lankan people. When considering the university students 80% of them have basic knowledge of Hindi. They have the ability to understand Hindi language because of Hindi films. So when considering the Hindi language there is a huge influence of Bollywood movies but only 15% of them have the writing ability of Hindi language. A language promotes peace and understanding among people as well. Therefore when we promote Hindi language among Sri Lankans, it may be easy to make a bridge connecting the two nations of India and Sri Lanka. It can be started from the university level. The aim of this study is to reveal the ability to use and understand Hindi language of university students. Required data have been analyzed using a mixed approach of both qualitative and quantitative methods.Item Practical Problems of Learning and Teaching Hindi as a Foreign Language.(Department of Hindi Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2016) Hansika, W.A. MaduniIn Sri Lanka, Hindi is not considered as a main language. Some Indians those who live in Sri Lanka use Hindi language as their first language while some Sri Lankans use it as a second language. However majority of the people are interested in learning foreign languages and Hindi language holds a priority yet there are many problems associated with learning Hindi as a foreign language. For the study, a sample of 32 students who are learning Hindi as a foreign language was taken into consideration. Relevant data was gathered through conducting direct discussions, observation and by administering self-developed questionnaire. According to the findings it was revealed that learners are not practicing what they have learnt and the explanation of the teacher is not given in an understandable language. Specifically, not using interesting teaching methods in the teaching process, teachers' verbal explanations having the many difficult words which are simply too hard to catch and repeated failures in learning Hindi etc. can be given as problems of learning Hindi as a foreign language. Finally, it is recommended from the teachers’ perspective that students have to practice what they have learnt about Hindi, they need to make extra efforts on learning and from the learners’ perspective teachers should use more interesting methods on teaching while encouraging the students to overcome the difficulties in learning Hindi as a foreign language.
