Item A new vision to LIS field: an overview of Green Library Concept(Pusthakala Vidya, 2019) Warnasooriya, Thrishala‘Green concept’ has become a trendy discussion not only among the library professionals but also in other fields as a result of severe environmental issues faced by the entire mankind. Besides other countries have already taken better solutions based on green concept and done various researches but rarely seen in the library Science field in Sri Lanka. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to examine the green library concept as a new vision to the library science field. Specially computer literacy is a key requirement for non-academic staff to operate the library technical services. Most of the libraries across the world have taken actions to develop various staff development programmes. Those can be varied based on the type of the library and its users, capacity of the staff, attitude, technology, budget, mother institution, rules and regulations, and country. Therefore, developing a unique Computer literacy enhancement programme for a certain library is ideal. ‘Library Professionals’ Training Series (LPTS) containing 3 levels was developed by Interactive Media Unit (IMU) to enhance the computer literacy of the staff. As level I could be successfully completed, a progress of the staff was noticed. The issue faced by the university as a result of this is the drop of life - long education and research culture. The inability to create a good image of the library, non - popularity among library users, the distance between the library and the user as well as the failure to use the library collection adequately are the current challenges faced by the library. As a solution for those issues, library marketing should be undertaken. The traditional marketing tools such as conducting lectures, distribution of flyers, postures are now out dated in the digital world. Use of web sites, blogs and social media are also not effective, as the number of online visits to the library web pages are not satisfactory. Therefore, another creative marketing tool is needed. Hence, the objective of this study was to examine the significance of applying green concept as a marketing tool in the library of first state green university in Sri Lanka. Interviews were conducted with randomly selected 5 academic staff members of the library. Questionnaires were distributed to randomly selected 10 academic staff members in each faculty and 10 students in each academic year. 76% out of the respondents declared that library marketing is needed while 45% of them suggested that the most suitable method of library marketing is green concept. 88% of them prefer green concept. If green concept exists, 90% of them are ready to increase the number of library visits. Accordingly, it is evident that application of green concept is a timely requirement and a solution to market the library services among consumers and a marketing tool as well to increase their library visits.Item A study on green moments in selected libraries in Western Province, Sri Lanka. National Conference on Library and Information Science, Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Sri Lanka., 2019) Warnasooriya, ThrishalaA global interest on green concept has taken into consideration in today's world, as the environment has been drastically threatened by irresponsible human activities and modern technology for some decades. Therefore, going green has become a necessity in Sri Lanka at present as a country in which the number of environmental issues is dramatically increasing day by day. As a result of this, green implementations can be evident in some of private and government bodies in Sri Lanka. As community centers and knowledge hubs, the libraries also have a great part to play in this regard. In view of that, going green has become a goal of libraries in other countries, but very primitive in Sri Lanka. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to examine the green movements in university libraries in Western Province, Sri Lanka. The population was the university libraries in Western Province. Therefore, Survey method was used to gather data from randomly selected 13 university libraries in western Province. Both state and private university libraries were included in the sample as 50% from each category. Conducting interviews with selected academic staff and self-observation were main tools used in data collection. The study was conducted based on the research framework which consists of five areas namely, library building, operations and practices, programmes and services, information systems and library collection. Those five areas were covered by 23 indicators. Basically, 14 green indicators could be identified in surveyed libraries. According to the data analysis, waste segmentation was the most popular green practice which functioned in 84% of libraries. Use of e-resources and gardening were practiced by 54% of the surveyed libraries. 23% of libraries produce bio gas and some libraries had a separate resource center for those activities. Being a multi -faceted approach, this concept deals also with the green information literacy. Green information literacy is not only gathering literature related to green concept but also enhancing a self – awareness on the concept among the staff and users. As a new trend in Sri Lankan perspective, green concept functions in few libraries. As the heart of the governing institution, SLIDA library is rich with green practices. As a result, SLIDA was rewarded with the green award in 2018. The information literacy and the awareness on green concept is needed for such an achievement. Therefore, the sole objective of this study was to identify the impact of green information literacy of library staff to establish green concept in the library. 5 main fields namely, library building, collection, information systems, practices and programs or services were investigated when interviewing the library staff to measure their green information literacy covering 23 green indicators. The data were collected through the answers given in the interview. Accordingly, green information literacy was evaluated with simple calculation. The collected data revealed that the library staff has a great concern on the concept and what they should do in the library achieve the green goal of the institution. The library adheres to many green practices among which following a green policy has become the most prominent factor which enhance their green enthusiasm and literacy of them. Accordingly, the level of green information literacy among the staff was in a satisfactory level as they follow the green policy while practicing green theories in the library environment and the institutional premises. Hence, all these depict that the green information literacy directly affect the green movements in the library. Center for sustainable solutions and Nature club of the university accomplish a national and an international service to the world. On account of these, the library of university of Kelaniya is supposed to extend its contribution in this regard. But, such a contribution is not evident. In view of that, the objective of this research was to identify the challenges and barriers faced by this library and suggest the most suitable solutions for those. 5 main fields namely, library building, collection, information systems, practices and programs or services were defined to measure the contribution of the library with regard to the green concept. The primary data was collected from randomly selected 5 academic staff members by conducting interviews and self-observations. The collected data revealed that the library adheres to some green practices such as construction of the new library building as to get the maximum benefit of day light and natural air, acquisition of electronic sources, library automation, waste and electronic disposal management. Although they practice green concept up to some extent, the library cannot be named as a green library yet. The causes of this situation were identified as the demand for the electronic sources requested by the departments are considerably low. As a result, the space and the furniture allocated for print materials are gradually increasing. Although the library has already been automated, still they use paper for many functions. Although the library automation creates a paperless environment in the library, computers and server machines used for the automation produce CO2 emission for 8 hours per day. In the old library building, number of fans and lights are operated by a same switch. The production of electricity through solar panel, prevention of misuse of electricity during the working hours, application of cloud computing systems instead of huge server machines, minimizing the paper usage with the use of RFID system, sending circulation notifications via E-mail, encouraging the consumers to use e- resources, provision of smart boards for discussion group, educating the library staff and consumers about green library concept can be used as the solutions to overcome the barriers of making the library green. If this library could apply these solutions innovatively, it will benefit our environment, and also the consumers will enjoy the new library environment which is both environmentally friendly and user friendly.Item Designing and Introducing ‘GREEN’ model to lead Sri Lankan university library system towards green library concept: with special reference to the library, University of Kelaniya.(3rd International Research Symposium on Social Science and Humanities, National Center for Advanced Studies in Humanities and Social Sciences (NCAS), Sri Lanka., 2021) Warnasooriya, ThrishalaAs community centers and knowledge hubs, going green has become a great concern in every field including the libraries. Although some green implementations can be evident in some libraries in Sri Lanka, they are not been systematically functioned. This is an extension of previous researches related to green library concept which followed the research framework with five major areas namely, library building, operations and practices programmes and services, information systems and library collection. Those five areas wer~ covered by 23 indicators. Therefore, designing and introducing a green library model was a current necessity for Sri Lankan library system to regulate their green movements. On the other hand, primitive attention has been given on designing a green library model for universities in many countries including Sri Lanka. Therefore, the sole objective was to design and introduce a green library model for the library, university of Kelaniya which is known as the first state green university in Sri Lanka to go green. After identifying existing green features through self-observation, green implementations which are possible to be practiced in the library were identified and defined through the interviews had with sectional heads of the library. Accordingly, the model was named as 'GREEN' indicating green library practices. The indicators for respective letters depicting G- Gardening, R-Resource sharing, E-Efficiency, E-Environmental friendliness, N-Natural resources. Each factor includes related green implementations which can be practically functioned in the library at present condition. The followings could be identified as the conspicuous, existing green features at present. Indoor and outdoor gardening were concerned in category one. Resource sharing means resource sharing through digital platforms, minimizes physical visits, purchasing, sharing and promoting more e-resources. Efficiency stands for efficient use of office stationery, efficient use of machinery items and equipment, efficient use of telecommunication equipment or having verbal communication and use of cyberspace. Besides energy sources such as water, electricity should be effectively used and a water purifying system as well as a rainwater harvesting facility can be implemented. Under environmental friendliness, Waste management including reduction of plastic, polythene, papers and processes such as composting, recycling papers were highlighted. Natural resources criterium includes the maximum use of natural daylight, air, ventilation to enhance the interior quality and user convenience, local purchasing, energy saving practices, purchasing LCD monitors, LED bulbs etc. in addition to the existing indicators, new possible green implementations could be recommended to be practiced in the library. If this GREEN model was followed and practiced, the green concept can be systemically practiced in the library. As a result, the library can be nominated as a green library in near future.
