Item Use of Electronic Information Resources by medical students at the Rajarata University of Sri Lanka(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Wanasinghe, W.M.P.G.K.T.Due to rapid stride in the field of information and communication technology, libraries are getting completely modernize in to information access centers in electronic forms. This paper explores the role in medical student’s knowledgeof searching information and the use of electronic resources at the faculty. Objectives of the research are to identify the awareness of e-resources available at the university, to study usage of electronic resources available at the university and which areas of training needed on e-resources usage at the faculty of medicine and Allied Sciences, Rajarata University of Sri Lanka.The survey method was used for data collection. The structured questionnaires were used to collect data among the medical undergraduates at the faculty from 1st to 30th September 2015 covering question on computer literacy, Internet access and location, Knowledge and use of electronic resources and training needs. Using simple random sampling methods, seventy questionnaires were distributed. Responded rate was 71%, whom 20% student’s access internet daily. And 34% access internet weekly.50% of internet access student’s access e-books and others access to social media. 50% of the library visited undergraduate did not aware about e-resources available at the library and the university. As medical undergraduatesmany respondents felt that e-resources were important and required awareness to access e-resources.And revealed that undergraduates who express an interest in learning about the library’s electronic resources. Based on these findings, it was recommended to conduct a user awareness programs for the medical undergraduates with hand on session use e-resources available at the library and consortia. And future suggested that library service can be extended and modified to do training for undergraduate to access and use e-resources.Item Information Needs and Information Seeking Behavior of Geo Scientist in Sri Lanka(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Tilakarathna.T.C.P.K.Information need has become foremost among human needs. Due to this significance of information, it has become a necessity to the officials in the field of Library Information Science, to have a better understanding about the information needs of their clientele. The main objective of this research is to identify the information need and information seeking behavior patterns of geo scientists of Sri Lanka. This research was conducted following the judgmental sampling method, with the participation of 128 members of the Geological Association of Sri Lanka. Information was collected by means of questionnaires and observations. The level of response received for the questionnaires was at 46.9% and the responses were subjected to a statistical analysis by SPSS PC 2010. The behavioral patterns of the geologist were identified through Classification and Regression Trees Analysis (CART) based on different variables while comparing the scientific information obtained from the targeted group. The research revealed that geologists have a special tendency in depending on electronic sources to extract the information and the use of scientific periodicals, seminars and workshops. It clearly showed a very low usage of libraries to get access to information. According to the outcomes of this research, geologists were facing difficulties when they are seeking information due to following reasons, such as incomplete information, information not being updated properly, lack of high speed internet facilities, higher rates charged for online access and inability to browse information etc. These factor had an adverse effect on their research articles and its impact was detected clearly through the analysis as well. According to the above findings, geologists are not satisfied with the services provided by the libraries and information resource centers. Therefore, the officers who provide information should be prepared and well equipped with necessary information in order to provide a qualitative service to the core readership in the future without a delay.Item Information needs of Newspaper Journalists in Sri Lanka(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Sajeewani, K.The principal purpose of this paper is to identify the information needs of the Newspaper Journalists in Sri Lanka.The other objectives are to examine the sources of information they use and to investigate the type of libraries they use for getting information. The survey research design used and the population are the newspaper journalists in Sri Lanka and the sample selected using hundred newspaper journalists. Majority of newspaper journalists preferred to use political information, health, education and the information related to the gender respectively. Majority used newspapers, books, newspaper cuttings, internet and audio visual media as a sources obtaining information correspondingly. 58% used their institution libraries they work and second position got their use of personal libraries. The general standard and norm is that the journalist should be more versatile and be knowledgeable not only with a particular area of his or her interest but with other subject areas not limiting to a minor area in the sense that the newspaper journalists should possess wider knowledge, experience and competencies. This will enable the newspaper journalists to offer quality service for the newspaper reading communities. On the other hand, this kind of soundness will help to develop a newspaper journalist an all-rounder, socially recognized persons and enable to serve the readers. This will support for the professionalism in newspaper journalists.Item Internet Use and Its Impact on Library Usage by Trainiees at Naval and Maritime Academy (NMA), Sri Lanka(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Ranawella, T.C.This study focuses on the impact of Internet on Library usage, Navel and Maritime Academy (NMA), Sri Lanka. In this study, two hundred trainees attached to NMA were given a semi structured questionnaire to collect data. It shows that the usage level of NMA library is very low due to the personal laptops given with dongles to the trainees to access Internet directly. It is also noted that the opening hours of the library and the location, hampers the use of library. The researcher recommends that adequate funding to be made available to the library to provide electronic resources and to introduce training programs to enhance the knowledge of trainees on information retrieval and citation techniques to maintain academic honesty. The researcher also recommends to introduce a plagiarism software to the NMA library to prevent violation of copyrights.Item DELNET: Services towards sharing between institutions(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Kar, D.C.Indian information professionals, education specialists and scientists had realized that the time has come to share the information resources and to coordinate mechanisms. Looking from the participant’s side, it was common to find an institution participated in more than one network. The ultimate goal of information/library networks is to interlink information resources in a metropolitan area, so that users could access information irrespective of its location, format, medium, language, script etc. Further, the development of such networks required actions in several areas such as training, rationalization of information resource acquisition, diffusion of standards, preparation of union lists, and generation of database services apart from setting up hardware, software and communication facilities. A large number of library resource sharing networks like the Metropolitan Area Networks such as CALIBNET in Calcutta, DELNET in Delhi, BONET in Bombay, PUNENET in Pune, MALIBNET in Madras, HYLIBNET in Hyderabad, ADNET in Ahmedabad, MYLIBNET in Mysore, and countrywide ones like ERNET (Educational and Research Institutions), SIRNET (CSIR Laboratories), and INFLIBNET (Universities and Research Institutions), and sectoral ones like BTISNET (Biotechnology Networks) etc. were conceptualized. This paper describes the establishment of DELNET (Delhi Library Network). While describing introduction to DELNET and its history, author will describe when it is started and who supported the financially and present status and number of members from the country and from foreign nationals. Author will describe what are the services it provides to its member institutions, the objectives of DELNET and what are the union catalogues and databases are maintained to provide services to its members satisfactory. Authors describes the mechanism how delnet collect information of the difference members institutions and share information with each others. Authors describes DELNET’s inter-Library loan (ILL) and Document Delivery Services to its member libraries and its mechanism. DELNET is giving training in the use of KOHA - an Open Source Integrated Library System and Dspace for building Digital Libraries. DELNET is glad to provide consultancy to the libraries on implementing these Open Source Software. DELNET Provides a DEL-PLUS software which has features like MERC 21, barcode application, compatible for all libraries and provides free upgradation from time to time. Authors will describe DELNET’s other important and major services to the Libraries of India and Overseas member libraries like Retro-coversion, Reference Services, Professional Training and Consortia Services. DELNET has been growing up very successfully during all these years of its existence. Its relentless efforts in resource sharing have proved extremely effective and has been a big leap towards the modernisation of libraries in India. The future of DELNET is very promising with the growth in number and size and as a variety of information on South Asia Libraries becoming available through DELNET. It is expected that all institutions outside India specializing in South Asian studies will take DELNET membership in future.Item Contribution of University Establishment Branches and Sections in Fulfilling Information needs of University Students: Study Based on University of Kelaniya(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Jayasekara, J.M.A.K.In a University there are several establishment branches and sections such as academic, academic establishment, student welfare, General administration and Library, Health center some of them are very contributing in providing their information to University students like the student welfare branch. The principal objective of this paper is to study the contribution these establishment branches and section in providing their information to students. The other objectives are to identify the information needs of the students related to University affairs, to investigate how to solve University information related problems by the branches and sections and to examine problem faced by the students and the branches and sections of the University in access and delivery of information. Method of the study was the survey and the sample was 100 students selected from four Management, Social science, Science and Humanities faculties including 13 branches and sections in the University. Primary data collected using questionnaires, interviews and observation methods. It revealed that educational information is the leading type of information hence students use more frequently the University library and ICT center. Notice Boards were the highly used communication channel. However students more prefer to use University website. Provision of information by the branches and sections at satisfactory level. The principal problem is the under-utilization modern ICT and media in providing information. The other problems are minimal support given by the office staff, students’ poor knowledge on the information services provided by the branches and sections. Suggestions are the establishment of University affairs information center for students, Use of modern ICT and media, updating University web providing students information, use of electronic notice boards, networking the branches and sections and improving information and computer literacy among the students.Item An Evaluative Study on the Services provided by the National Library, Sri Lanka(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Chathurani, W.M.P.E.Among all other types of libraries, the role of the national library is to preserve the national memory of a given country for the use of existing and future generation. National library Sri Lanka provide number of user services. The objectives of the study are to identify different user services provided, to investigate their effeteness to examine the obstacle when conducting these services. The method of research in a survey and primary data collected using two questionnaires. One for 40 national library staff members and 50 users taken as a sample of the study. Data was analyzed using Excel software. Many users were unaware more user services in the library and there were not an effective user services owing to innasiguate ICT usage for user services scarcity of technical tools and the library staff. Even though the collection is versatile, users did not use it properly. Suggestions are to improve user awareness and user training programs and to apply new technologies in user services. It concluded that more and more effective and efficient user services should be provided by the National Library of Sri Lanka.Item A Study of Library Collection in Sri Lanka Advanced Technological Educational Institutions in Sri Lanka (SLIATE)(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Balasooriya, B.A.P.The library is the place where rapidly increasing huge volume of knowledge and information is collected, organized for the dissemination to the users. The knowledge and information gathered in different resources are collected in libraries and these emulative resources belong to library collection. Within this content, library collection plays a significant role. This study is based on the evaluation of library collection. Objectives of the paper is to identify the library collection in Advanced Technological Educational Institute libraries to study the collection pattern and how organized it, to examine the suitability of collection with the study programs in SLIATE, to investigate the uptodateness of the collection. The research method adopted was the survey and the population was total students and academic staff and the sample were 250 Diploma final year students and 10 Lecturers including of library staff selected from all SLIATE in western and southern provinces. It was identified total collections cover with mainly textbook, there was a lack of other library materials. Library service conducted on traditional method, no internet facilities. The collection was not updated and weeding has not been done. Suggestions are made to improve library collection with additional books which are related to course conducted by SLIATE. Library opening hours have to be extended on readers demands, new collection development policy and weeding should be initiated. It is better if libraries take action to utilize new methods in the acquisition of library material.Item Praise or Perish: Scholarly Influence of Buddhist Commemorative Publications(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Attanayake, G.Festschrift and felicitation are comparable usage for commemorative publication. Commemorative publication is compiled with respect of recalling someone or show respect to someone. Especially in the field of academia, commemorative publications are abundantly published to offer the respect for eminent personalities who substantiallycontributed for their field of study and society. Publication of commemoration works in the field of Buddhist Studies has rapidly increased last few years in Sri Lanka. Library of Postgraduate Institute of Pali& Buddhist Studies acquired a large number of publications and consequently implemented a separate collection for effective use of them. The main purpose of this paper is to identify the scholarly influence of the articles included inthecommutation works in the field of Buddhist Studies. In total 70volumes compiled as commemoration works were examined which were kept in the library of Postgraduate Institute of Pali& Buddhist Studies, (PGIPBS) University of Kelaniya. Two hypothesis were formulated to generalization the research problem. The findings of this study were substantiated the hypothesis 1 as ‘the included articles incommemoration works are scholastic.’ This study confirms the requirement of compiling an index for the collection of commemoration volumes available in PGIPBS. This assessment will enable the librarians to plan better collection development and implement better information service for their users. Further, practical implications can be utilized to upgrade the scholarly influence of the articles too. There has been no such study done on commemoration works in the field of Buddhist Studies in Sri Lanka.Item Study Based on the communication skill of students in the use of University library facilities(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Aththanayaka, A.M.M.C.; Madhusanka, Amila; Madushanka, AyeshToday, many university library in Sri Lanka have been able to provide Knowledge and information to student with the support of Modern Information Communication Technology applications up to certain extend. Among those facilities internet services, E- library initiatives, modern database services, E- Journal, E-book services, social networking facilities are few to be mentioned. Principle purpose of this paper was to investigate the knowledge, understanding of the students on these service and to explore their communication skill in using these services. Survey method of research applied and the population of the study was total number of students in University of Kelaniya and the sample selected hundred students from four faculties being the research framed to a case study design. Study revealed that the students possess with adequate communication skill in the use of library facilities however the main draw sack they face that the did not have adequate knowledge and understanding about the modern ICT based information services provided by the University library. This is a serious knowledge and aptitude gap prevailed among them and therefore move awareness programs, training sessions, particularly workshop based on modern library facilities are to be launched by the library.
