Abstract: The purpose of this study is to explore the service rendered by libraries to the academic activities of universities in Sri Lanka. Two questionnaires were used to obtain information about university library services from university librarians and students. Apart from the North and East, the survey was conducted among university librarians and 150 students were selected faculty wise from the Universities of Colombo and Kelaniya. In addition to this, the information and knowledge gained through the previous literature could reveal the influence of library services on university academic work and the beginning and evolution of university academic work and library services. The survey revealed that there are, insufficiencies of library resources, lack of adequate understanding of undergraduates regarding the organization and services of library materials, inadequate staffing and inadequate training to them. According to this study, the main steps to be taken to improve the university library services are to provide undergraduates with proper training in the use of libraries, to increase the required resources in line with the increasing number of students, to computerize library activities and to provide internet service facilities. In particular, the need to facilitate research work is emphasized. It can also be pointed out that steps should be taken to improve photocopy services and audio-visual services.
