An unusual presentation of congenital haemangioma as hypertrophy of the hand at birth

Abstract

Congenital haemangiomas are rare vascular tumours that present fully formed at birth and typically undergo spontaneous regression during infancy. This report describes an uncommon presentation of a congenital haemangioma manifesting as marked hypertrophy of the right hand in a term neonate. The newborn exhibited significant enlargement and bluish discolouration of the hand, with imaging revealing soft tissue thickening and abnormal vasculature consistent with a congenital haemangioma. There was no bone involvement or associated systemic abnormalities. With conservative management and close monitoring, the lesion demonstrated nearly 50% regression by two months of age, with preservation of hand function. This case highlights a rare deep-tissue presentation of congenital haemangioma and underscores the importance of accurate diagnosis to guide appropriate management, avoiding unnecessary interventions and ensuring optimal outcomes.
