The contents of this oration are based on a series of four studies carried out by the author. These studies were conducted to determine the risk factors for adverse pregnancy outcomes. Adverse pregnancy outcomes considered were low birth weight, pre term birth, small for gestational age births, maternal complications during pregnancy and spontaneous abortions. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations made based on available evidence.
