dc.description.abstract The sole objective of an underdeveloped country is development. For that, various states utilize unique methods. Important criteria for a country’s development are resources, geographical differences and political vision. Due to globalization, undeveloped states cannot reach the peak of development alone. They have to receive support from different sectors, and achieve development. Development is crucial to Sri Lanka now since the war has ended and the country is enjoying freedom. The new trend is to march towards the new dimension of development. The present government has commenced short, mid and long term development projects island wide. Moreover, various development programmes are planned. As funds are not sufficient to implement them, the government obtains funds from other countries and organizations. When considering Sri Lanka, there’s a delay in development reaching rural areas. So, there should be a method to flow the benefits of development to rural areas. NGOs are organizations which fulfill the objectives that cannot be fulfilled or missed by the government sector in achieving development goals. Those can be classified as regional, national and international. These organizations facilitate the countries to eradicate the drawbacks in development. All the NGOs representing the said 3 categories are being operated in Sri Lanka, with their various visions. North and North eastern provinces are prominent. The reason for that is the development had not reached said areas due to 30year war. It is a timely need to check the operation of such NGOs to achieve development goals, as the war is over. Ampara is a district which ranks at a low level in development of social, economic, cultural and political sectors. Many programmes are being implemented to develop those sectors. The majority of those are being condcuted by NGOs. Therefore, it is vital to consider the regional, national and international NGOs of this district. There are 20 divisional secretariats in Ampara. Padiyathalawa is where a majority of Sinhalese live. It is important to get to know what NGOs are operating in the division, and the development achieved in social, economic, cultural and political sectors. It is a fact to consider how these organizations render support in rural economic development.
