Item A Study on the Necessity of Implementing Online Programs for Higher Educational Institutes in Sri Lanka(International Postgraduate Research Conference 2019, Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Muthugamage, C.D.; Deepani, E.A.T.; Hettiarachchi, K.S.T.Generally, education is considered as a factor which moulds an individual to a professional. Conventional education refers to long-established customs that society traditionally used in educational institutes. In Sri Lanka, education for both secondary and tertiary education still depends on routine physical attendance of students in classroom activities. When considering the higher education in Sri Lanka, in most of the situations, working professionals face various constraints in continuing their further studies. As a result of this issue, a knowledge gap is created. However, with the passage of the time and with transformation of the teaching and learning methods in education, technology received a high demand in the educational sector. Moreover, in the contemporary world, there is a trend for online programs which can fill the aforementioned gap. This research study examines the necessity of implementing online programs in Sri Lankan higher educational institutes. As the targeted population is considerably high sample has been selected from National Institute of Business Management and has been narrowed down to the students graduated from School of Computing and School of Business in the year of 2018. Due to complexity of studying, the sampling has been limited to 250 graduates. A questionnaire was circulated among randomly selected 50 (25 each) graduated-working professionals of National Institute of Business Management and using random sampling method. They are asked to recirculate the provided questionnaire among five colleagues in the same organization from different higher educational institutes in Sri Lanka. The data analysis method used in the research study is regression analysis. The results of the research study revealed that the demand for the online programs among the working professionals is high due to many advantages that they can fulfill. Moreover, the findings indicate the factors (independent variables); self-efficacy, social influence, user satisfaction, quality of information and academic relevance. Based on the factors the findings indicate that there is a strong effect on the demand for online programs in multi-disciplinesItem The Effects of Podcasting on Speaking Skills: An Investigation on Upper Intermediate ESL Learners in a Local University(International Postgraduate Research Conference 2019, Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Wickramage, U.C.In contemporary English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom, technology and language learning are two interrelated components. Language learning is encountering a shift in research area from CALL, to Mobile Assisted Language Learning (MALL) which is defined by Moura and Carvalho (2012) as any type of language learning that takes place anywhere and anytime, supported by mobile devices (Moura & Carvalho, 2012). Podcasting is one of the mobile technologies which is increasingly used by language teachers as a tool for delivering language related resources and encouraging the learners to learn outside the traditional classroom. The primary aim of this study is to investigate the effects of podcasting in improving students’ speaking skills in the ESL classroom. A total of 40 upper intermediate first year undergraduates of a local university have been investigated by assigning them into experimented and control groups. 20 students have been assigned for each group based on the random sampling method. Communicative Language Teaching (CLT) approach was used for the control group. The treatment meetings comprised podcasts to assist the learners in addition to the given activities in their lessons. Moreover, the learners produced podcasts of their own as pairs and uploaded them into podcasting service with the intention of sharing their podcasts with the peers and refer to them throughout the treatment process. A quantitative data analysis approach was used where the analysis of the pre and post-test scores of the experimental and control groups were conducted using SPSS software with statistical techniques including mean, standard deviation, frequencies and paired sample t-tests. Both Pre and post-tests comprised an oral presentation on a given topic. The analysis of the post-test scores of the control and experimental group indicates a statistically significant difference; t(19) = -5.327, p = 0.000. The statistical analysis of the pre and post-test scores of experimental group (within-group) depicts a statistically significant difference; t(19) = 9.718, p = 0. 000. The statistical analysis of pre and post-test scores of control group shows a slight statistically significant difference; t(19) = -3.688, p = 0.002. Thus, the study affirms that the podcasting enhances the speaking skills of the ESL learners and the use of podcasting is identified as one of the effective MALL technologies that can be incorporated into the ESL classroom.Item Cyber-crime and Law (Special Reference to Sri Lanka and India)(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Jayasekara, A.H.D.New media is a catch-all term for all forms of electronic communication that have appeared or will appear since the original mainly text-and-static picture forms of online communication. The Internet is based on single technical standards that allow global communication. With the emerging use of computer technology, computer-related crime and cyber-crime have become a significant global challenge. The computer is rapidly increasing society‘s dependence upon it, with the result that society becomes progressively more vulnerable to computer malfunction, whether accidental or deliberately induced, and to computer manipulation and white-collar law breaking. (Weeramantry,1998). Cyber-crime encompasses any criminal act dealing with computers and networks. Although businesses in developed countries are often most affected by the abuse of Internet services to facilitate cyber-crime, the topic is equally relevant for Asian countries. This research is qualitative research. In this research need to get a picture about cyber-crime in India and Sri Lanka. And need to study Internet related laws in selected country. In this research studied International laws about cyber space and cyber-crime and also study Sri Lankan laws and Sri Lankan cybercrime cases. And found out new suggestions to minimize cyber-crime in Sri Lanka.Item Integrating Computer Assisted Language Learning in the English as a Second Language Class Room(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) YapaArachchi, Y.A.G.S.The rapid advancement of technology has changed the way the world operates. Technology has invaded the every facet of human lives. Reformation of various kinds is taking place in the field of educationdue to modern technology.Integrating computer technologyinto education is the latest trend in the modern world. With technological development, computer technology has been incorporated in language learning and teaching. The objective of this research is to investigate whether Computer Assisted Language Learning(CALL) is effective in improving the four areas of language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking in English as a Second Language class room (ESL) with a special reference to selected undergraduates of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. The data was gathered through a questionnaire of thirty two items and conducting a Pre-test and a Post-test during the CALL programme in the Language Laboratory of the Department of English. Each skill was tested in the Pre-test and the Posttest separately through the use of CALL. According to the findings of the questionnaire 100% of the participants agreed that CALL is an effective way of learning a language in ESL class room. The research findings from actual class room tests showed that 88% of the participants could improve speaking skills, 74% of students could develop listening skills and 64% of the students could improve reading and writing skills. Out of the number of fifty students 82% of them could improve their language proficiency through the use of Computer Assisted Language Learning. The research findings prove that CALL provides a better learning environment, helpful in improving the four areas of language skills of the learners in the ESL classroom.
