    Professional Development of Education Administrative Officers in Sri Lanka: A Sociological Analysis

    The purpose of this paper is to investigate into salient features of professionalism which will be developed by Sri Lanka Education Administrative Officers in the government school education system and analyses causes and effects that can be identified among current education officers attached to Western Province in Sri Lanka towards a commonly accepted professionalism. Mixed methodology is used in this research study. Survey, Case study, Auto Ethnography, and Life stories are used as research methods. In addition, Traditional Model, Craft Model, Reflective Inquiry Approach, Mentoring, Reading and Journaling will be used as tools of assessing principal/ education officer professional development. Nature and constitution of the Sri Lanka Education Administrative Service (SLEAS) which comprises mainly recruitment procedure, pre-service induction training, capacity building training courses relating to the SLEAS officers and professional development of education officers in different countries will be considered as key variables in the investigation. A survey will be expected to be carried out in this research from quantitative perspective by using questionnaires, document surveys, and interviews will be employed to gather data. Furthermore, observation will be used throughout the data collection period being a member of SLEAS own experience earn for 15 years would be a valid ground for data gathering, analyzing and interpretation. The sample population consists of 110 education officers in Colombo, Gampaha and Kaluthara districts. The findings of the study will be urged policy makers and stakeholders of education system to revisit the concept of professional development programmes and leadership development in education administration officers who play a key role of education in primary and secondary education sector in Sri Lanka.Moreover, the overall results of the study will bring the intended benefits and to enhance the quality of education in Sri Lanka.

    The Role of Youth Participation in Community Development

    Youth participation in community development has been viewed as one of the most effective methods for promoting young people’s active engagement with social services. However, in rural communities of Sri Lanka, young people’s participation is most commonly related to their labour contribution. The core components of participation such as decisions, choices, and management are rarely seen. Addressing these issues this research, from a qualitative research method, aims to contribute to local understandings about youth participation in development. With a focus on Agalawatta rural area, it explores the grounded experiences of two youth groups in order to offer considerations for social practice, programme implementations and further studies. The research involved in-depth interviews, focus group discussions, and participant observations with youth, village heads, NGO staff, religious leader, a school teacher and young people’s parents in Mathugama Grama Niladhari divisions. Both Quantitative and Qualitative data were collected using semi structure questioner, focus group discussions and observations. The respondents considered charitable contributions of youth as their primary form of active participation, including educational awareness and campaigns in the community. There are some positive outcomes from youth engagement; one of the influential aspects is contributed by local partnerships. This substantial contribution stimulates interactions between key local members and youth so they can work together for positive change in the community. This research suggests that young people do need support from key local groups or recognized agents to assist them in initiating participation in terms of forming groups, and providing training and coaching to open new possibilities and strengthen youth’s initiatives. These include religion and development, power relations, and women’s leadership. This research suggests that these factors either motivate youth participation because of social norms and cultural acceptance

    Correlates of Employees‟ Psychological Contract Fulfillment: A Proposed Study Model

    Leader member exchange (LMX) theory (2016) provides a framework to understand the formation of vertical dyadic work place relationships between leaders and subordinates. The goal of LMX is to explain the effect of leadership on members, teams and organizations. Available literature acknowledges that multiple work-related consequences including psychological contract fulfillment which is understood as a relational and dynamic phenomenon that emerges and develops in every employment relationship would depend on the way employees are being treated by their leader. Meta analysis of the theory has outlined three categories of antecedents as leader characteristics, member characteristics and the nature of their inter-relationship and another category of situational variables as the determinants of leader-member exchange. For the proposed study, psychological variables of general self efficacy, culture orientation of the employees, transformative leadership style and the state of the leader-member relationship will be measured as LMX antecedents. It is hypothesized that these antecedents will positively impact the employees‘ psychological contract fulfillment. Afore mentioned hypothesis will be tested in relation to a population of three hundred executive and staff level employees at an apparel manufacturing company in Ragama, Sri Lanka using explorative research design and survey method. Data collection instruments will be tested for their psychometric properties using Cronbach‘s alpha test, correlation coefficient test and confirmatory factor analysis. MANOVA will be conducted for hypotheses testing. Research findings are stipulated to contribute to strategic decision making in workforce planning of the company in concern and literature on employees‘ psychological contract fulfillment in the Sri Lankan context. Simultaneously the research process is intended to create a platform for interdisciplinary approaches to collaborate and to help organizations make data driven business and workforce decisions in achieving sustainable development.
