Use of Eclecticism by Teachers in Teaching English Vocabulary
(International Postgraduate Research Conference 2019, Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Ovitigama, H.S.M.
Eclecticism is a multi-sensory language approach which involves different language learning methods rather than sticking into one approach. This research is based on teachers’ use of Eclecticism in teaching English vocabulary. Main aim of this study was to investigate how Eclecticism affects to develop vocabulary of students learning English as a second language. It was hoped to provide a rationale for employing Eclecticism in teaching vocabulary for second language learners and investigate whether the English teachers use Eclecticism in teaching vocabulary in the North Central Province in Sri Lanka. Moreover, it was anticipated to find the attitudes of English teachers in the North Central Province regarding Eclecticism and to bring out the reasons behind the effectiveness of Eclecticism regarding teaching vocabulary. Another objective was to find the language development rate of Experimental group vs Controlled group. Learning vocabulary is a universal problem in second language learning. As the learners are of different learning styles, forgetting and unlearning methods, the effectiveness of Eclecticism was experimented in the research. Through trial and error, the people have realized that there is no single method or approach of language learning which is universally accepted as the best. As a remedy Eclecticism was introduced to the field of language learning. The investigation was implemented with 100 students and 20 teachers in the North Central province. Teachers’ lessons were observed under a criterion with ten techniques. Quantitative data were gathered from pre-test, post-test and O/L results of the same students and qualitative data were gathered from questionnaire given to the teachers and lesson observation. Quantitative, qualitative data together with primary and secondary data helped to derive the conclusion. In the research, the vocabulary development was measured under memorizing, rate of learning, contextual use of vocabulary and number of words learnt within given period. Data were analyzed with the use of descriptive statistics. In conclusion it was proved that Eclecticism helps the second language learners to improve their vocabulary knowledge other than one traditional method. The research revealed that most of the teachers in the North Central province do not use Eclecticism to teach vocabulary. Most popular techniques used by the teachers to teach vocabulary were translation and visual aids in both Experimental and Controlled groups. The positive attitudes of teachers regarding Eclecticism were brought out by the research. This research introduces a method to teach English vocabulary in an effective way and gives guidance to teach and learn vocabulary. It was proved that the vocabulary learning rate was accelerated in the Experimental group. Finally, it was found that the main reasons behind the effectiveness of Eclecticism are its various capabilities of multi-sensory approach followed by motivation. Therefore, it is recommended that the Education authority of second/foreign language teaching should pay more attention to introduce this approach to English teachers and provide a training regarding effective use of Eclecticism in teaching English

Vocabulary Learning Strategies of Engineering Sciences Students
(19th Conference on Postgraduate Research, International Postgraduate Research Conference 2018, Faculty of Graduate Studies,University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Manchanayaka, S.
The aim of this paper is to analyze the vocabulary learning strategies and enumerating the number of vocabulary learning strategies used by the participants. The problem investigated in the study is the poor vocabulary of the participants affecting their academic performance. A rich vocabulary is needed to perform well in engineering sciences and on a close investigation, it was confirmed that their repertoire of technical terms is poor. The low-frequency technical terms are important to the participants and their poor vocabulary of technical terms is an issue that even challenge their teachers. Their vocabulary is limited and that hinders their performance. A cross-sectional quantitative study was done and the data were collected through a questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 63 strategies and it is a modified version of Schmitt's (1997) Vocabulary Learning Inventory which is used to analyze and enumerate the number of vocabulary learning strategies of second language learners. This Vocabulary Learning Inventory included seven new strategies designed by the researcher to measure the digital strategies used by the participants. Simple descriptive statistical analyses were run on the data. This study is significant as the vocabulary learning strategies of engineering sciences students have not been fully investigated and the number of vocabulary learning strategies has not been documented. This significance motivated the researcher to fully investigate the vocabulary learning strategies of the participants. Findings concluded that digital strategies are used more frequently than the other traditional vocabulary learning strategies. Findings further confirmed that the participants used electronic devices and software programmes to learn technical terms leaving behind the traditional paper dictionaries. The statistical analyses confirmed that technical terms are more crucial than general service words in the participants' specializations

An analytical study of characteristics, which should be included in an ideal Online Hindi Learner’s Dictionary
(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Lansakara, R.N.
This paper will explore problematic areas of Online Hindi Learner’s Dictionaries, which have been launched to assist online Hindi learners through advanced means and ways. Since the teacher is not always an option or a well-chosen dictionary, the dictionary has been played a vital role in language learning and teaching for decades. As we are engaging in the process of language learning and teaching with plenty of complex necessities, it is difficult to carry traditional paper dictionaries with us all the time. Thus electronic dictionaries, unlike traditional papers, have been opened-up interesting and advanced methodologies with regard to vocabulary acquisition. Online Hindi Learner’s Dictionaries present distinct ways as well as developed new ways of defining words and providing introduction of words and phrases. Most of students, who learn Hindi as a foreign language, often have difficulties in finding the correct meaning for unfamiliar words or phrases in their dictionaries. So an effective Hindi Online Learner’s Dictionary should be included these characteristics - to make it easier for learners to identify and recognize the words' meanings; the language described is the usual, everyday variety preference is given to the quality of the treatment of words rather than to the quantity of words particular care is taken in the treatment of the more frequent words; the provision of information on the Grammar of words; the learner's dictionary should supply information about the contexts and environments in which words tend to appear most regularly. They give an account of what is typical, rather than describing what is simply possible; pronunciation is indicated by means of the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet); Pictorial representation of words; Culture and domain-specific words, inflected forms and discourse markers; requires knowledge of the conventional contexts and collocations surrounding a word. This paper makes an attempt to point-out the importance of using an Online Hindi learner’s Dictionaries for foreign students. Moreover, it will also give a possible idea about developing an ideal model of Online Hindi Learner’s Dictionary.
