Item Clinical Evaluation of Erandamuladi vasti on Gridhrasi (Sciatica)(Ayurvedic Scientific Seminar on Vatavyadhis, Ayurveda Vidyapeeth, New Delhi, India, 2007) Pandey, N.; Dissanayake, K.G.C.; Tiwari, S.K.Sciatica is a neurological disease caused mainly due to unknown etiology or inter vertebral prolwsed. It is rot fatal, but severe pain may make the patient bed ridden. The management of sciatica with unknown etiology still a medical problem where except for some palliative measures no permanent medical treatment is available. The NSAlDs, of course, may instantaneously relieve the pain and are being widely used in the medical practice. But the adverse effects are so drastic that the patents are forced to discontinue the treatment. Keeping the above shortcoming in view, an attempt was made to find out the ther4eutic effcacy of Erandamuladi vasti on this disease. Total 30 cases were taken for the study and received selected therapy. The result was highly encouraging and statistically highly significant (P< 0.001 ).Item Effect of Snehapana with Virechana Therapy on the Lipid Profile of Patient with Over Weight(National Seminar on Ayurvedic Management of Heart Diseases, Dhanwantari Ayurved College & Hospital, Ujjain, India, 2007) Pandey, N.; Dissanayake, K.G.C.; Tiwari, S.K.Ayurvedic panchakarma therapy is the most important method of management in various acute and chronic diseases of human being. In the preparatory measure of Panchakarma therapy, administration of Sneha (oils and fat) is most important According to the modern concept, the intake of ghee and oils will contribute for the increase of blood lipid profile that may lead to atherosclerosis and related problem. Go there is confusion among the petient3 and public rcgerding thc intake Of ghee and oils that prescribed by Ayurvedic Physicians. In this study, classical method of Panchakarma therapy was administered to evaluate its effect in the lipid profile of patients and to prove the safety of Ayurvedic approach. Snehapana and vashpaswed were administered as purvakarma and Eranda tails used for "Virechana”. Biochemical and pathological investigations giving special emphasis to lipid profile at various stages of treatment carried out. A placebo study with plain ghee for snehapana was also done and compared with the study subjects, The study showed that the intake of ghee as snehapana would not contribute to the increase of cholesterol level in There is a significant decrease in the levels Of total cholesterol, LDL, VLDL cholesterol ant levels and elevating the HDL fraction in patients who were undergone snehapana (tila tala) ty virechana (Erand tila). The study provides clinical evidence that snehpana intake helps reduce the undesirable lipids of the body and enhance the good Cholesterol fraction. Thus, the anxiety the same by the modern concept proved baseless and proves the safety of Ayurvedic approach.Item Critical Study of the Disease Sthaulya (Overweight and Obesity) and Its Management by Samshodhan and Samshamana Therapy(Introspection and Prospects, 3rd National Seminar, Desh Bhagat Ayurvedic College and Hospital, Mandi Gobindgarh, India, 2008) Dissanayake, K.G.C.; Kumar, N.; Tiwari, S.K.According to the Ayurveda, the principles of management Of Sthaulya, Kaphahara Medahara, Vatahara drugs are advised by various Acharyas. Hence in this study its management is planned with Snehana -By Tila Taila (A. H.Su.3) , Swedana -Ruksha Udwartana (Ch.Su. 6/13), Virechana - Eranda Taila (Ch.Su. 13/12), Basti- Lekhana Basti (Sha. U. 622). In this study total Sthaulya patient were divided in two groups, 21 patient was in In group With trial drug and 15 patient were registered in second group who were treated as conrol, only total 19 patient have completed, 10 in treatment group and 9 in control group. The trial therapy is a safe herbal formulation and act not only on a weight but on variety f these factors. By increasing good lipid levels and decreasing bad lipid levels in blood_ Thus it helps to control hyperlipidemia. Further Clinical trial proved more desired output by decleasing lipid levels in combined therapy Of Vlrechana and Vasti, rather than them being used separately. Lipid level was significantly reduced by the drags, specially Virechana having more effect over triglycerides. Weight and BMI reduction was highly significant in both groups. Drug therapy, especially Basti showed more effect, Drug therapy produced significant reduction in systolic BP and highly significant reduction in diastolic BP. Results suggest possibility of more productive output in combination of drug therapy and dietary control and physical exercise together.Item Scope of Rasayana Therapy in Ayurveda through Modern View(Ayurveda Sameeksha, Department of Ayurveda, Sri lanka, 2007) Pandey, N.; Dissanayake, K.G.C.; Tiwari, S.K.Every human being wants a long, healthy and happy life. The main reasons for this disease are the lack of attention on oral hygiene and the malnutrition. According 10 Ayurveda Who have more "Guru", "Ruksha' food for their daily meal are subjected to mukha roga. Many drugs for this disorder had been recommended both in Ayurveda and Modern Medical Systems yet these drugs are not freely available; nor have they shown remarkable effectiveness. Thus research on the effect of "Pogostemon heyneunus" used by the traditional physicians will be of great significance. (Jayaweera 1981) Following criteria also had been consideredfor the selection of this plant for this study - easy accessibility - suitablity for oral administration On the basis Of these factors, this plant was selected for the study of its effects on Sheetada.Item Clinical evaluation of the Anti-inflammatory action of Dashanga Leph along with Arka Patra Sweda in Amavata Patients(National Conference on Ayurveda (Ayurveda - 2007), Tathagat Ayurved Research Foundation, India, 2007) Dissanayake, K.G.C.; Tiwari, S.K.Amavata, a disease with the diathesis of depletion of agni which in turn leads to acclimation of variety of by-products of faulty digestion and metabolism in the body. Such by-products called Ama are physically similar to kapha. Because joints are the major seats of kapha. They are the major victim, characterized by chronic painful swelling. Pain is the major end point of treatment of these patents. Thus, the prime aim of treatment is to reduce pain. Amavata has very close relevance to Rheumatoid arthritis with unknown etiology of the modern medicine. Painkillers used for treatment in modern medicene for this, which include Aspirin and several other NSAlDs are known to cause severe gastric irritation upon prolong usage. In Ayurveda, the principles of treatment for Amavata are promotibn of agni, depletion of Ama and palliation of vitiated vata locally as well as generally to help reduce articular and extra-articular manifestations. Conventionally in Ayurveda application of Ushna, Ruksha, Vata nashak lepa is used to reduce pain and swelling. Since, this same effect is produced by local applicaton of Dashang leph along with Arka patra sweda over affected joints. This treatment has resulted in success to a greater extend in amavata patients.Item Review on the Effect of Oral Administration of Two Different Oils in Hyperlipidemia Patients(03rd International Conference on Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Traditional Medicine, Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, 2008) Dharmasena, K.N.A.; Dissanayake, K.G.C.Hyperlipidemia is one of the health burdens in the world. As per the Ayurveda classics, it can be co-related with Medoroga. Ayurveda perspectives and scientific studies have shown effectiveness Of Virechana on Hyperlipidemia: nevertheless, oil ingestion in high doses is mandatory before Virechana. Still it is controversial on Hyperlipidemia patients. This is an attempt to rectify the Oil ingestion and discuss the efficacy Of two commonly used oils; ghee & sesame oil on hyperlipidemia by compilation of pharmacological, Bio-chemical and Theraprutic attributes. Hence, it was designed to cover the literature of modern scientific findings. Studies have shown a significant lowering of cholesterol by ingested oil as not seated in body tissues. Eventually, enhancing digestion and lowering lipoprotems in the blood. As Ayurveda pharmacology sesame has Madura, KashayaRasas, sukshma ,Vyavai , Laghu , UshanGunas, UshnaVeerya, Madura Vipaka properties. Ghee has Madura Rasa, Guru, Snigda, SheethaGunas, SheetaVeerya,MaduraVipakaproperties. As analysis 47.8% Saturated fatty acids (FA), 15%- 18% Monosaturated FA,3% - 6% polyunsaturated FA. But sesame oil contain 39.7% MonounsaturatedFA, 41.7% polyunsaturated FA , 14.2%saturated FA. Treatment principles of Medoroga emphasized to manage with Lagu, Ruksha,Ushna food and medicines.Considering the properties of both oils, Sesame oil is suitable for treating Medoroga. Bio-chemically sesame oil has PolyunsaturatedFA than ghee, which exerts hypocholestremia. Study reveals a potent hypocholestremic effect on oil administration, which replenish by Sesame oil comparing to ghee. Further Extensive investigation is mandatory to have a deeper insight of this phenomenon.Item Effect of Selected Panchakarma Therapy on the Lipid Profile of patients with Hyperlipidemia.(1st International & 27th All India Conference (Ayurvision – NIMACON 2008). National Integrated Medical Association, Varanasi, 2008) Dissanayake, K.G.C.; Tiwari, S.K.A research was undertaken to study the clinical profile of hyperlipidemia patients and evaluate the response of selected panchakarma therapy in blood cholesterol level Hyperlipedemia is one of the emerged public health problem all over the world. Causes are mainly unfavorable modification of life style and dietary habits. Practice of dietary measures recommended in Ayurveda while elaborating 'Medoroga chikithsa' is beneficial in hyperlipedemic condition. The present study was designed to fulfill the assessment of clinical efficacy of the selected therapy in the management of Hyperlipedemia by biochemical investigation and compare the efficacy of trial therapy with control group. The selective treatment showed a significant improvement in the parameters under study. Also the importance of poorvakarrnas, proper administration of virechana dravyas, possible complications were observed. It was concluded that the treatment can be proposed as a safer and effective option for the prevention and management of hyperlipedemia.Item Effect of the Leaves of Artocarpus Heterophyllus for the State of Anidra.(World Ayurveda Congress, Swedeshi Science Movement (Kerala Chapter of Vijnana Bharathi, India), 2002) Dissanayake, K.G.C.; Wickramasinghe, M.S.K.; Tissera, M.H.A.According to Ayurveda, the Upasthamba (three basic factors) required for the maintenance of human body are diet, brahmacharya and sleep.
