Item Problems Related to Subject Headings Authority Control Mechanism in the National Library of Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Wimalasiri, B.G.S.P.A very enormous role has been vested to libraries, information centers due to information growth and explosion. Given this opportunity, it is much important in controlling, organizing and dissemination of information and this has lead for establishing speedy bibliographic control strategies and methods. With the rapid use and development of computer cataloguing than the traditional cataloguing together with its application of modern ICT has diverted to online catalogue both in-house and web based forms. Even though, the author, title and subject are used as access points, different areas pertaining to the subject available in document cannot be accessed through that mean and therefore different areas in subject domain will have be accessed through different subject headings. This can be done with the provision of subject headings to the relevant catalogue. When providing subject headings proper authority control have to be followed. There is a dire need for the authority control of subject headings. To investigate whether authority control mechanism is used by the national library is the problem of this study.Item Research productivity and research growth at the university of kelaniya: a study based on the postgraduate theses collection(The Library, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2023) Wimalasiri, B.G.S.P.; De Silva, A.P.U.This study focused on a comprehensive review of postgraduate theses spanning the period from 1960 to 2023, drawing primarily from the repository of postgraduate theses in the main library, University of Kelaniya. The primary objective of this study is to find out the research productivity and growth of the postgraduate degree program offered by the University of Kelaniya. At the same time, this study tried to find research trends in all subject disciplines covered by the University of Kelaniya and identify popular subject areas among postgraduate students. By using the content analysis method, details related to the theses submitted for the degree program Ph.D., M.Phil. M.S.Sc., M.Com. and M.A. collected for this study. Microsoft Excel was used to analyze 2000 theses from the library collection. This study has been done in two stages. Firstly, data was collected from theses, and data was described by using literature from secondary sources to make a clear analysis of the literature. The research findings indicated that most of the studies focused on the Social Sciences and Humanities, particularly at the M.S.Sc. level. However, there were fewer theses submitted for Master of Science (M.Sc) and Master of Art (M.A.) degree programs. The popular fields in the Faculty of Social Sciences were Mass Communication, Library, and Information Science, and the fields of Human Resource Management, Commerce, and Financial Management were the popular fields in the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies. As recommendations, faculty of Postgraduate studies, the University of Kelaniya should give more attention to other fields rather than Arts and Human Resource Management. Developing new programs in these areas is crucial to enhance research effectiveness. This responsibility extends to both the Faculty of postgraduate studies and other faculties of the university.Item A study on author names authority control related to online public access catalogue (OPAC) of national library, Sri Lanka(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Wimalasiri, B.G.S.P.The limited definition of the term ―library‖ exited in the past was expanded widely at present due to electronic information media inherited by modern technology which has become ―the information distribution center.‖ This technological change has resulted in effecting various development change in library activities. The card catalogue which facilitated the easy search of book in a library has improved by way of electronic communication system and the internet, up to the level of online public Access Catalogue system at present. As a result of above facility, the reader who visits the library is capable of fulfilling his or her requirement speedily and efficiently with the adaptation of library catalogue authority. In order to provide and efficient service to the readers it is necessary to ascertain as to whether there is a proper authority control in the online public access catalogue in the library. The objective is this study observed as to whether the authority control is functioning properly in libraries in order to provide and efficient service to the readers. This study is concerned about the in house online public access catalogue of national library of Sri Lanka and its functions regarding author names (personal author name, co-operate author names) and to ascertain as to whether proper authority control is in practice. While carrying out the study regarding the authority control of author names, participant observation method and questionnaire method was adopted while information and opinions were gathered presenting them with open ended questionnaires. According to the study the functions in respect of the authority control online public access catalogue are in and unsatisfactory level at the national library of Sri Lanka. Weaknesses were observed in translation, transliteration, term spacing and differences in names etc. The functions regarding author names, authority control have to be streamlined introducing a proper comprehensive author name authority files, using correct transliteration method. It is conducted that, suitable software should be used and entering bibliographic data to be carried out with more care, using a separate form for transliteration. It could be mentioned that the national library of Sri Lanka being the leading library in the country, it should adapt exemplary method to other libraries in the country in maintaining authority files and an authority of online public access catalogue in the future. Similarly, it is role of the national library to maintain the authority files constantly. National library in Sri Lanka Should set an example to other libraries in devoting on authority control. It is a national responsibility.
