Item Impact of Community Based Health Promotion Activities on Developing Health Practices in Horowpothana Divisional Secretariat Division(In: Proceedings of the International Postgraduate Research Conference 2017 (IPRC – 2017), Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2017) Wijesingha, W.A.U.M.Improved health has been one of the main benefits of development. Better health is the key of human happiness and well-being. From this perspective, health promotion is directly caused for developing health education through strengthening community action and personal skills. Therefore the main purpose of the paper has focused on the impact of community based health promotion activities on developing health practices through community action in Horowpothana Divisional Secretariat Division. The study area of this research is Horowpothana Divisional Secretariat Division. In this study, stratified sampling method were used by the researcher. Under stratified sampling, sample was divided into two strata as ―following health promotion activities‖ and ―do not follow health promotion activities‖. In determining strata of health promotion activities that conducted by the village community used as the major criteria. The total sample included 60 households. Out of them, 50% were represented by following health promotion and the rest was represented by do not follow health promotion and the sample size by the total population was 5%. Primary data was collected through a questionnaire, semi structured interview and observation. Cross tabulation and time series analysis are employed for the analysis. This study revealed that there is a considerable difference in health practices between selected strata based on health promotion materials. As a result of community based health promotion activities, health education and health practices of mother‘s have developed in the region which is following health promotion activities. As recommendations it can be indicated that introduce such kind of community based activities in other rural areas, enhance the quality of the health promotion materials and health promotion activities can be implemented as escape development issues associated not only health, but also improving participation and others among communities.Item A study on sustainability of small scale enterprises in rural areas; a case study of Garagoda pahala grama niladhari division(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Wijesingha, W.A.U.M.Institutions concerned with rural development see entrepreneurship as a strategic intervention that could accelerate the development process. The major problems in rural areas such as poverty, unemployment and unequal distribution of income etc. could be solved it small scale enterprises could generate income and employment in rural areas in both production and service sector. The main objective of this study was to explore the viability of industrial sector enterprises as against service firms. ‘According to the data analysis in our field it was revealed that the village enterprises 68% producing goods, 20% selling goods and 12% providing services. According to the study it was revealed that there is a significant progress of small scale manufacturing enterprises than service enterprises. The manufacturing enterprises that have accessibility to materials, both inside and outside and trading facilities than service enterprises. Although the small scale manufacturing enterprises are the sustainable enterprises in rural areas, there are some negative effects also remain, such as constraint in access to capital and technology, the short term persistence of the enterprises. Therefore it is necessary to make proper guide and intervention of the institutions that implement and introduce entrepreneurship development programs in rural areas. The problems related with the small scale manufacturing enterprises can be solved if procedures for building more sustainable enterprises in rural areas were implemented.
