Its focus is to study the musical compositions of the native Passion Plays enacted since the Portuguesc period with special attention paid to the Passion Play of Duwa; a small fishing village off I\'egombo. This thesis further analyzes the evolution of the musical compositions of the native Passion Plays enacted during the Portuguese. the Dutch and the British periods. In Chapter 5 it discusses where the Passion Plays (1'0.1'.1'0 l. a form of Liturgical Drama is said to have been performed in the Jesuit College of Colombo during the Portuguese period. Though the performance of the Catholic Passion Plays ceased during the early period of the Dutch rule due to persecution. with the arrival of the two Oratorian Indian missionaries; Fr. Joseph Vaz and Fr. Jacome Gonsalvez. there had been new innovations in the musical compositions of native Passion Plays. The novel musical compositions of Fr. Gonsalvez's is the key influence on the lusic of the Sri Lankan Passion Plays .whieh lasts for over four centuries within the country. His contribution and the music is discussed in chapter six. Finally in the British era. the evolution of the Passion Play takes a nationalistic turn towards a more localized production under Fr. Marcelline Jayakody. which results in a new idiom of Musical Christian worship. Thus it can be seen that two prominent figures. namely Fr. Gonsalvez and Fr. Jayakody has been influential in the evolution of the Passion Play music in Sri Lanka. Chapter seven discusses the aspects of Fr. Jayakody's compositions. 11 This research is oriented in examining the influences that molded and changed the authentic compositions of Fr. Jacome Gonsalvez as well as Fr. Marcelline Jayakody, and to what extent the Passion Play and its music has evolved. An analysis of the structures of the Passion Plays, the musical compositions, and comparisons form the core of this thesis. Individuals who worked closcly with Fr. Marcelline Jayakody in Jaffna (Mr. Ernest Mcintyre) and while producing the Duwa Passion Play (Mr. Clement Fernando) were also interviewed to get an in depth idea of Fr. Jayakody's thoughts and concepts in producing the play. Fr. G. Pilendran of Jaffna was interviewed to gain information on the Viyakula I'irisangam which is seminal for the composition of Fr. Gonsalvez original Passion Play. Subsequently Fr. Josephmary of Batticaloa and Fr. Saveri of Jaffna were interviewed as they personally direct Passion Plays in the two districts in later years. to observe how far the Passion Play has evolved in those areas since the early 1700's The authentic chants have been recorded as audio and video recordings to analyze and transcribe the authentic music of Jaffna, Mannar and Negombo. The music of the Duwa I'ass;on Play, and the Pasan and Lalon; of that area too has been recorded and transcribed. The thesis focuses on tracing the evolution of the Passion Play of over five centuries along with its music and to the idiom it has evolved to within the context of the Passion Play ofOuwa.Item The Diverse Musical Traditions of Sri Lankan Passion Plays(University of Kelaniya, 2015) Samarakoon, K.The primary objective of this study is to present an analysis on the different genres of music that is embedded in Sri Lankan Passion Plays. Sri Lankan Passion Play music is influenced by musical disciplines of several countries such as Portugal, India, and Sri Lanka. The Sri Lanka Passion Play tradition can be traced as far back as 1602 with the arrival of the Franciscans (1553) and then the Jesuit missionaries (1602). When the Passion Plays were enacted in different parts of Sri Lanka they were accompanied by different regional musical traditions. Thus through the Sri Lankan Passion Plays one can trace European, South Indian as well as Sri Lankan musical elements with regional cultural and linguistic differences. To achieve my objective I have selected three Sri Lankan Passion Plays, namely, Pesalai (1907), Boralessa (1924) and Duwa (1939).Item Father Marcelline Jayakody’s Contribution to Sri Lankan Music(University of Kelaniya, 2012) Samarakoon, K.Fr. Marcelline Jayakody was a Sri LankanCatholic priest, who is honored as a musician, lyricist, author, journalist and patriot.Having lived during a time of national awakening close to Independence, he composed music for the church, drawing from kavi and dances such as kulu-natum and kalagedinatum that existed in the country, using the indigenous languages, Sinhala and Tamil (Ariyaratne, 2003).In his contribution to Sri Lankan music, the original score written for the Duwa Passion Play of Negombo, is rated as the greatest Passion Play in Asia (Fernando, 2001). Fr Marcelline wrote lyrics for the Sinhalese film ‘Rekava’ (1956), which was a landmark in the Sri Lankan film industry, portraying an indigenous outlook, winning several international awards. In fact, Fr. Marcelline composed new hymns to contribute to the several centuries old ‘Pasan’that existed in Sri Lanka from over 300 years ago. Also very importantly he used folk music that already existed in the country for this purpose. The aim of my study is to explore the methods that Fr. Marcelline Jayakody used to compose his music: in context to musical elements such as rhythm, meter, texture and verse. I will be using already existing audio and video recordings of the hymns and Passion Play music composed by Fr Marcelline Jayakody with special reference to the Passion Play music composed by him for the Duwa Passion Play of Negombo, Sri Lanka.
