Item Analysis of Factors affecting to Employee Turnover in Medium Scaled Apparel Industry in Sri Lanka(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Rajapaksha, U.G.The topic of this research is the factors affecting employee turnover in medium scaled garment industry in Sri Lanka. There were three research objectives; first objective is to identify the factors affecting employee turnover in medium scaled garment industry in Sri Lanka, second objective is to examine the impact of socioeconomic factors on employee turnover and third objective is to examine the impact of organizational factors affecting on employee turnover intention. Literature indicates employees are influenced by pay as the economic variables; age, marital status, sex, education as the demographic variables; upward mobility, integration, occupation, formal and instrumental communication, community participation is the organizational variables to influence on labor intention to leave the organization. As the sample 280 operators were selected from ten garment factories within the Colombo district. As the base of selection of the sample, operators within the factory was selected using simple random sampling method while factories were selected using purposive sampling method. Semi structured questionnaire was used as the quantitative data collection tool and interview also used as the qualitative data collection tool. Collected data was estimated using multi-variate logit model. As the statistical tool, SPSS AMOS (version 22) was used. As the dependent variable, ‘intention to leave’ is used while as the intervening variable ‘employee satisfaction’ is used. As the moderating variable ‘distributive justice’ is used while independent variables employee social economic variables, organizational variables were used. Finally study conclude that work life balance, upward mobility and routinization become the core factors while pay does not become a core factor to set a felling in the mind of employees to leave the job.Item Comparative Study of Impact of Innovation on Business Performance of Dlog PLC and Mtel PLC(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Herath, T.; Rajapaksha, U.G.Telecommunication is one of the competitive and innovative industries in Sri Lanka. The current study is conducted with the objective of examining the relationship between innovation and business performance and to identify what gives Dlog PLC the superior business performance compared to Mtel PLC in term of product innovation and marketing innovation comparatively. Research strategy was considered as survey method. Product innovation and marketing innovation are considered as independent variables. Business performance is considered as dependent variable. The target population is customers of Dlog PLC and Mtel PLC. Sample profile of 70 is selected for the collection of quantitative data through semi-structured questionnaires using simple random sampling method. The data was analyzed using ordinal logistics regression analysis model with the aid of SPSS. The final outcome of the research shows product innovation has more impact on business performance of Dlog PLC than marketing innovation compared to Mtel PLC.Item Effect of Technology on Sri Lankan IT Employees' Turnover Intention(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Abilashini, T.; Rajapaksha, U.G.IT industry is one of the most concerned industry for employee turnover, which is contradict to the growth of business. Regardless, generation gaps plays a major role in the issue, while technology plays the impactful role on individuals. The main objective of the study is to identify the impact of technological consequences has on employee’s turnover intention. Primarily the consequences were selected based on literature reviews. Deductive methodology was chosen as an approach of the research. Findings derived based on responses from IT industry representatives and analyzed using quantitative techniques. Specimen sufficiency measured by the KMO Bartlett's test, remained at 0.795 alongside a Cronbach Alpha estimation of 0.748. Results indicated that while Job security, Accountability, worker engagement, real time feedback has a negative relationship with employee turnover intention, while social exposure has a positive relationship with worker turnover intention.Item Effects of Health and Safety Measures on Job Performance of Technical Staff: With Reference to Port Industry in Sri Lanka(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Perera, P.S.W.; Rajapaksha, U.G.In a work environment where Employee Health and Safety and Organizational Profit Maximization is highly prioritized, it is of high importance to identify and understand the effects Health and Safety Measures have on Job Performance. Thus this study addresses to understand the effects of Health and Safety Measures on Job Performance of Technical Staff focusing Port Industry in Sri Lanka. Primary data were collected through a questionnaire from a sample of 100 technical employees and from a semi-structured interview with a safety officer. Since the study comprised of a mix approach, statistical estimation of quantitative components of the collected data were done by ordinal regression logit model using SPSS (version 22) software while qualitative components were analyzed using thematic approach. The quantitative analysis revealed a positive and a significant relationship between health and safety measures and Job performance of technical staff and the qualitative analysis further supported the quantitative research findings leading to the conclusion that there is a positive impact of health and safety measures on job performance.Item Empowerment of Women in Sri Lankan Apparel Industry: With Special Reference to Line Employees(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Walakuluge, C.R.P.; Rajapaksha, U.G.The study sought to explain the functional background of empowerment initiatives undertaken in the apparel industry in Sri Lanka. Thus, the objective of the research was to understand and explain the relationship between structural empowerment and organizational commitment in an organizational environment focused on female line-workers. A sample of 295 female employees was selected based on the Anderson’s method and questionnaires distributed based on quota sampling. Semi-structured questionnaire was used to get the responses. The collected data were analyzed using the univariate and bivariate statistical methods. As per the study it was found that the respondents were exhibiting a moderate level of organizational commitment. It was also proven that structural empowerment of line workers has a direct and positive effect on their level of organizational commitment. Studies in the field of women empowerment in various sectors such as medical, education and police could provide us with interesting insights into the socio fabric of our society.Item Impact of education on rural poverty in Sri Lanka(University of Kelaniya, 2014) Rajapaksha, U.G.Item Impact of Factors Affecting on Premature Intention on Employee Productivity of Aircraft Technicians in Sri Lanka Air Force(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Balasuriya, B.A.M.P.; Rajapaksha, U.G.Sri Lanka Air Force is the service organization. Premature retirement of aircraft technicians in Air Force has become an alarming concern since it has created a vacuum of competent and skilled technicians to maintain the aircraft fleet. This results to lower the productivity in the organization. Finding causes leading to this issue is timely and important since the sustenance of the service provided by Air Force depends highly on the skilled technicians. The research focuses on the relationship between premature retirement of technicians and its effects on the productivity in the Air Force and providing recommendations to minimize such retirements in the future. The study was limited to the aeronautical engineering tradesmen in the operational flying formations and technical support squadrons in Air Force. Preliminary data survey was carried out by obtaining data from Air Force Head Quarters for the period 2009 to 2014 on earlier retirement. Questionnaire distributed among 50 technicians working in operational flying formations and technical support squadrons in Air Force to obtain primary data. The data from the questionnaires were fed into the program, IBM SPSS version 20 and the results were analyzed using regression and correlation. Interviews were carried out in order to collect data for qualitative data analysis from Commanding Officers and Officers Commanding Maintenance in operational flying formations and technical support squadrons in the Air Force. According to the results there is a strong correlation ship between premature retirement and productivity. Therefore, it can be concluded that poor motivation, not giving due recognition for their experience, limited training and knowledge provided for the technicians have direct impact on the intention of premature retirement of technicians which effect the productivity in the organization.Item Impact of Human Capital on Organizational Performance: Special Reference to Banking Industry in Sri Lanka(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Rajapaksha, U.G.This research has conducted to analyze the impact of Human Capital Management to organization performance. Selected industry for the study is banking industry in Sri Lanka. Banking industry is a service organization. A service organization can be properly competitive due to application of marketing tools such as People, Physical Evidence and Process. As per the reviews of the literature, ‘People’ factor is more important than other two. ‘People’ factor become really powerful due to its inherent qualities such as Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attitudes which other resource don’t have. Further every organization has different types of capitals such as money capital, physical capital, infrastructure capital and human capital. Out of these capitals, human capital is more important due to many reasons such as its appreciable nature, decision making ability, transformability, memory power, forecasting power, thinking power etc. Therefore the human qualities such as having Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attitudes can be changed according to organizational requirement by the education, experience, age, training and development etc. in order to form a better human capital. This study has three main objectives; first, to explore the impact of demographic variables such as (age, education and experience), second to see explore training & development and third, to assess employee motivation factors (salary and rewards) as the human capital components on organizational performance (financial performance). Most of the journal articles and literature have been undertaken to develop an argument in the field of human capital and firms’ performance. Most of the authors have analyzed the human capital and its performance in different ways. However majority of them have positive arguments about the human capital and its impact of organizational performance. Accordingly as per many studies, employee’s skill, abilities, experience and knowledge is known as capital of human or else human capital. In order to manage the human capital properly, as per the literature, there should be adequate training & development, education, motivation in order to enhance their skills, knowledge, abilities and attitudes. Last 10 years of financial performance was passed with components of human capital in four banks in Sri Lanka. Each variables was averaged and based for the evaluation. As the independent variables, age, education, experience, marital status, sex, training and development and rewards are taken. As the moderating variable labor productivity is taken while financial performance is taken as dependent variable. Structural equation method was used and analyzed the data using SPSS Amos (21). Adjusted R2 was 88.16 percent. RMSEA is 0.076. However, study found that the variables such as employees aged between 21 to 25 of years who have completed secondary education and having gained training and development are significantly and positively influential. Further the employees with 5-15 years of experiences are also positively and moderately significant under 95 percent confident intervals. Further the variables such as experience with 26-30 years, being male employees, being unmarried employee, having training and development exposures and having age between 18-20 years show an inverse relationship to financial performance through labor productivity. Only being males become highly significant under 99 percent confident interval. Finally study concludes that components in human capital has a significant impact on organizational performance.Item Impact of Outsourcing on Lead Time to Apparel Industry in Sri Lanka(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Perera, M.D.B.; Rajapaksha, U.G.Lead time is a main challenge that the apparel industry of Sri Lanka has to face due to rising markets, frequently changing fashion patterns and high competition in the industry both locally and internationally. Therefore, meeting customer demands at a minimum time is crucial. This research was conducted using a sample of 30 apparel organizations in the Colombo district on the basis of simple random sampling. Outsourcing of transportation, warehousing, procurement, sales & marketing and packaging are the independent variables while the dependent variable is reduction in lead time. To conduct the research, primary data was collected through interviews and a questionnaire filled by the management of the apparel organization. The statistical estimation of data is done by Ordinal Regression Logit Model. Researcher was able to identify a positive impact of outsourcing on lead time in terms of apparel industry and with reduction of lead time the organizational and industry performance improves.Item A Study on the Attitude of Civil Non-Executive Staff About the Work-Life Balance in the Military: With Special Reference to Sri Lanka Air Force Base Katunayake(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Pathirana, B.P.; Rajapaksha, U.G.Work-life balance has been a topic frequented in the modern social and business environments mainly due to the fact that many organizations have now decided to shift from physical asset maintenance to human asset up-liftmen. Therefore, analyzing how a balanced human being can be more efficient than a normal employee has brought about vast changes in many business policies. Military however, is an industry that has its own set of rules with a work-environment that is unique entirely to them. Although military men are equipped to handle the work pressure that comes with the job description, the plight of most civil, non-executive employees are being grossly underrated. This study aims at examining the attitude of civil non-executive staff regarding the work-life balance in the military with special reference to Sri Lanka Air Force Base Katunayake. For this purpose a sample of 50 civil non-executive employees were selected at random and data was collected using a semi-structured questionnaire. The data is statistically analyzed with the help of ordinal regression logic analysis model. It concludes that job satisfaction and job involvement has a significant influence over an individual’s ability to balance work and life.
