Item Assessment of the problems of small business on venture performance(University of Kelaniya, 2014) Musa, B.M.Item Enterprise Education and Venture Initiative in Developing Entrepreneurial Potentials(2014) Musa, B.M.; Semasinghe, D.M.The development of entrepreneurial potentials is important to sustaining a competitive advantage among people coexisting in innovative environment. Quality entrepreneurship education and training seem to be a mechanism in promoting and encouraging entrepreneurial potentials among youth in schools. However, identifying and nurturing these potentials can contribute immensely for the development of entrepreneurial skills to sustaining economic growth and development. This research investigates the effect of enterprise education in arousing entrepreneurial spirits among pre-tertiary level students. Ten public secondary schools in Gombe metropolis Nigeria were examined to identify students who started a given form of business after graduation; students that graduated ten years ago from 2000-2010 was sampled. The study examined among non-science based students that had entrepreneurship related subjects and the science based students that had not. The study observed that entrepreneurship education can influence psychological attributes commonly associated with entrepreneurship spirit. Further reveals that secondary school students with entrepreneurship or related knowledge have higher achievement motivation and creativity for starting a business than their counter part without it. The study recommends that there is need to include a compulsory entrepreneurship subject in the secondary school curriculum.Item ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND UNEMPLOYMENT: A LITERATURE REVIEW.(International Conference on Business & Information, 2013) Semasinghe, D.M.; Musa, B.M.A great deal of ambiguity exists in the literature over the relationship between entrepreneurship and unemployment. The simple theory of income choice, which has been the basis for numerous studies focusing on decision confronted by individuals to start-up venture and become entrepreneur i.e. the increase in unemployment will lead to an increase in start-up activity (push-effect) on the grounds that the opportunity cost of not starting a venture has decreased. This study aims to contribute to the entrepreneurship literature by exploring the relationship between the two conflicting concepts; entrepreneurship and unemployment. In this paper we reviewed the relationship between entrepreneurship rate and unemployment rate using exploratory research. Furthermore, using secondary data we attempt to address the ambiguity between the two concepts empirically. However, we assumed that increase in entrepreneurship activities reduced unemployment, at the same time, high rate of unemployment lead to slowdown or decrease in entrepreneurial activity in an economy. Using available literature, we tried to justify this notion and reconciled the two conflicting concepts, for policy-makers and researchers as well.Item Leadership Succession Problem: an Examination of Small Family Businesses(European Journal of Business and Management, 2014) Musa, B.M.; Semasinghe, D.M.The greatest challenge facing the Small Family Businesses (SFBs) is the problem of succession (continuity) in today’s dynamic world. This phenomenon is caused by lack of proper planning by the business founders for the succession when they retire or die. The aim of this study is to examine the problem of succession among small family businesses in Nigeria. Drawing from eight small family businesses in Gombe metropolis, Gombe State of Nigeria, we examine why these businesses failed after the death of their founders. Primary data was used from former employees of the businesses under investigation and the children and relatives of the founders which, was qualitatively discussed. We also discussed some of the factors that prevent smooth succession or continuity of small businesses in Nigeria. The findings show that lack of proper planning by the founders for succession is the backbone of this problem. However, this happens due to fear of losing control of the business to subordinate or any of the family members by the founders. In addition, there is inheritance problem among the members of the founder’s family which tie down the business. The study suggests that SFB founders should have a long term succession management strategy by training a member of the family or hiring an expert to manage the business, alternatively, they should sale some shares of the business to the public or a partner.Item The Status of SME Development Programs in Nigeria(University of Kelaniya, 2012) Musa, B.M.Small-scale businesses have been playing an important role in the process of industrial and economic development of most nations. In Nigeria, there has been a decisive switch in the industrialization policy from import substitution to small-scale business development. To promote the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), the Federal and State Governments in Nigeria have set up programs to provide various services to small-scale businesses. Recent reports indicate that the programs have not satisfactorily performed their roles. This study is therefore, designed to highlight the roles and constraints of the programs implemented by the Federal and State Governments. The descriptive method of analysis is used and secondary data was used in this study. The study reveals that the programs were assigned with roles which could have assisted immensely the small-scale business development in Nigeria, however, factors such as lack of infrastructure, inadequate resources, undue political interference, an ‘un readiness’ or lack of preparedness of small and medium scale businesses to partake, and their lack of awareness on how to benefit from the programs have hindered the programs from performing their expected roles. The programs were assigned roles which could have assisted immensely towards virile development of SMEs in Nigeria. However, adequate financial, physical and human resources should be provided for the existing programs to fulfill their roles
