Item A Sociological Study on the Attitudes of Men on the Tendency of Sri Lankan Women towards Beauty Culture(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Lakmali, W.A.K.U.A.; Jayakody, J.A.N.A.In the contemporary word, women tend to consume beauty cosmetics and beauty cultural techniques .Beauty culture is defined as it focuses on physical appearance and aesthetics which enhances the natural beauty through beauty products and fashions. Generally people possess various attitudes on beauty culture. Attitude is simply a predisposition or a tendency to respond negatively or positively combination of five major components, towards a certain idea, object, person or situation. The main purpose of this study is to identify the attitudes of men about the usage of beauty culture by Sri Lankan women .The survey method and case studies were used to gather primary data .The primary data was collected through observation, interviews and questionnaire .The sample was selected randomly100 men aged between 20-30 years, who is married and unmarried, lives in Gampaha divisional secretariat . 65 %of the unmarried men possess positive point of views towards the women’s tendency towards beauty culture .Among them 52 %of the married men seem to be different in their perspective due to their nature of job, economic stability and religion .However, 41 %of the married men have a favorable attitude in this regard .This research mainly found that men’s attitudes on the tendency of women towards beauty culture vary due to their marital status and age. As per the study, the tendency of women towards beauty culture even determines the willingness of men to maintain their relationship with women.Item A Study of The Social Role of “Omens” in Rural Cultural Sri Lankan Communities (With special reference to Mirigama secretariat division in Gampaha district)(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Jayakody, J.A.N.A.Culture is a powerful human tool. Culture includes knowledge, beliefs, art, law, morals, customs, capabilities and habits acquired by man as a member of society. Basically culture is divided into two categories. Those are material and non-material culture. ―Omens‖ are a part of non-material culture, inclusion Enigmatic beliefs. Rural Sri Lankan communities have their own special cultural features including magic, faiths and beliefs. Omens are viewed as a sign from the natural world that delivers a message of some sort. Typically this message is seen as an indicator of the approach good or evil events. Omens are represented by people, animals, trees, dreams, as well as astrology. This study was based on the social role of omens. The main objective of the study was to identify the social functions of omens. Whether the functions are good and bad or visible and invisible. The survey and functional methods were used to gather primary data. Data was collected through observation and interviews because qualitative data is very important fact for this research. The Sample was selected using random purposive method according to nonprobability sampling theory. The sample consists of 20% of people including age and gender based. Thalahena village in Giriullagama GN division in Mirigama secretariat division of Gampaha district was selected as the research area. The main finding is that many good social functions are fulfilled by omens in Rural Cultural Sri Lankan Communities. In this regard, omens have to helped to, Develop co-operation in rural Sri Lankan communities. Help to Bond with their own religion. Understand about weather. These benefits of omens have also motivated people to love protect nature.Item A Study on the Functions of Magic in Rural Communities in Sri Lanka (with Special Reference to Mirigama Secretariat Division in Gampaha District)(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Jayakody, J.A.N.A.Most cultures of the world have religious beliefs that lead to the idea that supernatural powers can be compelled, or at least influenced, to act in certain ways for good or evil purposes by using ritual formulas. These formulas are, in a sense, magic. Rural people use Magic as a way of fulfilling emotional and social needs. Basically magic is divided in to two categories. Those are black magic and white magic. Social systems change constantly. Magic is most valued in rural society. At present, Sri Lankan rural communities are also subjected to great changes but the faith in magic is still visible in rural communities, where magic, faiths and beliefs play a major role. The main objective of this study is to identify the social functions of magic and explore the function and dysfunction of the visible and invisible. The case study and the functional method were used to gather primary data. Data was collected through observation and interviews because qualitative data is very important for this research. The sample was selected using random purposive methods according to the non-probability sampling theory. The sample consists of 30% of the population of the area. The Thalahena village in Giriullagama GN division in Mirigama secretariat division of the Gampaha district was selected as the research area. The main finding of the study is that many positive social functions are fulfilled by magic in rural communities in Sri Lanka.
