Item An Analysis of Writing Errors of the Korean Language Learners in Sri Lanka(19th Conference on Postgraduate Research, International Postgraduate Research Conference 2018, Faculty of Graduate Studies,University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Diddeniya, C.V.At present, the number of foreigners who learn Korean language is rapidly increasing. There is no exception in Sri Lanka. Students who prefer to learn Korean language are gradually increasing every year. The main goal of conducting Korean language classes is to improve the students’ communication skills. Among the four skills of language learning (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Listening), writing is the most difficult aspect. Therefore, it is very essential to develop a suitable methodology to teach Korean language writing in systematical way. The aim of this research is to clarify the writing errors done by Sri Lankan native students, when studying the Korean Language. For this purpose, a research was conducted in the form of a survey among 30 students. A sample of students was chosen from the University of Kelaniya, who study Korean Language as a major subject (2nd year - 15 students, 3rd year -15 students). To identify the errors, an error analysis on survey data has been done. The analysis was divided in to two parts, the word dimension and the sentence dimension. According to survey, more errors occurred in sentence dimension than word dimension. Word dimension was subdivided in to three major categories and sentence dimension was subdivided in to nine major categories. By analyzing answers of survey the most occurring writing errors in Sri Lankan native students have been identified. Moreover, by applying the proposed method in teaching environment, I expect improvement in Korean language writing education and also hope to contribute in developing learner's Korean language skill. One of the significant benefits of this study is that it attempts to investigate the students’ errors in their Korean writing. However, currently there is a significant emphasis on translating one language into another. The term of “Translation” has come into effect recently to facilitate the evaluation of the accuracy of a language translation. This process is now considered as an important method to ensure the accuracy of the work. The main objective of this research is to analyze the errors in the translations done by Korean language learners. This study is based on the students of the University of Kelaniya who study Korean as a compulsory, optional or an auxiliary subject. This research also ascertain the extent of the influence on writing, reading, listening and speaking of Korean language by translation. Writing outcomes of the class assignments of thirty participants in the Korean language class of level two and level three of University of Kelaniya has been collected as primary data to be analyzed. Data analysis of writing outcomes is focused on word formation, sentence structure, grammatical errors and meanings of words. This study discusses the reasons for students to make errors in translation and proposes a method to avoid translation errors. Moreover, by applying the proposed method in specific teaching environment, improvement in Korean language and translation and contribution to learner‟s language development is expected. Given that the study primarily attempts to investigate the student‟s errors in their Korean language studies, it is strongly believed that the result of this study will facilitate the teaching and learning process.Item Mahayana Buddhist Culture of Korean Peninsula.(International Conference on Sanskrit Studies, 2017 Department of Sanskrit, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2017) Diddeniya, C.V.Buddhism has its origin in India and spread into other nearby countries. In 372, Korea received Buddhist teachings. As a result, the two main philosophical schools of the Mahayana, the Mādhyamaka and the Yogācāra can be observed as integral part of Buddhism in Korea. In this abstract, the basic concepts of Mahayana Buddhism in Korea are analyzed. Worshipping the Bodhisattva is a key practice in Mahayana tradition can be observed as it is in Buddhism in Korea. Bodhisattva is given a similar state to the Buddha by placing their statues together. Among great number of Bodhisattva, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva and Maithri Bodhisattva has given a powerful state. Among Buddhas, Amitabha Buddha has given priority in Korean culture and literature. According to the Bodhisattva concept, laymen and monks have given similar state and leaving the laymen state is not necessary to practice monastic life. Ascetic life was just a concept without meaning. Realizing Nibbana is considered as a selfish act and the unselfish Bodhisattvas becomes popular. ‘Arahath’ is given lower state and it is considered that one life is enough to realize spiritual mindfulness. Therefore it is believed that there are great numbers of Bodhisattvas in this world. Extremely important position was given to the worshipping activities as result of the relationship between the state and community life. Even though Mahayana tradition is based on Buddha’s teaching, it establish in different countries with their own unique characteristics. Still the Buddhism is embedded in the life of people in Korean peninsula.Item Study of Buddha Statues of Gogurye, Baekje and Silla Kingdoms of Korea(International Conference on Sanskrit and Eastern Studies, 2018 Department of Sanskrit and Eastern Studies, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Diddeniya, C.V.The origin and evolution of Buddha statues is distinctive in various parts of the world. Buddhism was originated in India and spread all over the world. It was transferred to Korea in the late 4th Century through Chinese monks. It is believed that Buddha statue and other sculptures were also introduced to Korea at the same period by the same Chinese monks who brought Buddhism to Korea. Therefore Buddha statues found in Korea were greatly influenced by the unique characteristics of Chinese Buddhist sculpture. In this study, a qualitative analysis has been done to examine about the Buddha statues in the three main kingdoms of Korean peninsula namely Gogurye, Baekje and Silla [Gogurye: 37 BC – 668 AD, Baekje: 18 BC – 660 AD, Silla: 57 BC – 935 AD]. At the beginning, the geographical influence of north Chinese Buddha statues was very high due to the geographical location of Korean peninsula. Few bronze Buddha statues were found which belongs to late Gogurye period. Those statues consist of “prabhā maṇdalaya”, curled hair and thick robe. Oval shape face was also observed in both Chinese and the statues belong to Gogurye period. Even though, there is no significant sculptures were found in early Baekje era, collections of statues were found in latter period with Chinese characteristics. As compared to Gogurye and Bakje, Buddhist statues were found in Silla kingdom very hardly. This is due the fact that Buddhism was spread into Silla kingdom very lately. Only the Bodhisattva statues such as Maître bodhisattva were found which belongs to Silla kingdom. It can be concluded that Korean Buddha statues reflects a strong interaction with Chinese sculptures
