Abstract

Sinhala Pilgrim Poetry (Vandana Kavya) stands out as a distinct sub-genre within poetic literature. Following the arrival of Arahat Mahinda and the subsequent Buddhist revival in Sri Lankan society, a major meritorious act observed by kings was visiting sacred sites. During these journeys, the practice of reciting poems began as a means to alleviate the fatigue of the arduous travel. Consequently, the literary genre known as Vandana Kavya emerged in the post-historical period, and by the medieval period, the composition of pilgrim poetry had flourished. The research problem addresses the question: What are the linguistic features that contribute to the success of Sinhala pilgrim poetry? The objective of the research is to study the linguistic features evident in these poems. The scope of this research is limited to the study of linguistic features in two specific works written about Sri Pada (Adam's Peak): Sri Pada Pathmaya Vandana Gatha saha Abhinava Himagatha Varnanava and Purana Samanala Haella. This study was conducted under a qualitative research methodology, utilizing primary and secondary data sources obtained through libraries and the internet. Language is the primary tool of the poet, and the linguistic features of a work serve to intensity its value. In these two works, which are written in the folk poetry style based on Sri Pada, several features are depicted: a simple mode of expression, rural vernacular, the use of indigenous similes and metaphors, the preservation of rhyme (Elisamaya), the generation of alliteration, and a rhythmic linguistic style. Furthermore, a concise linguistic style, the strategic use of repetition (which was considered a flaw in classical literature), and the influence of Sanskrit and Pali languages in Sri Pada Pathmaya Vandana Gatha saha Abhinava Himagatha Varnanava can be identified as inherent linguistic features. Therefore, it can be concluded that the creator of Sinhala pilgrim poetry, despite being a folk artist, displays innate talent in the strategic manipulation of language. This linguistic structure has become a vital structural element that enhances the aesthetic flavor (Rasa) of the work, contributing to the creation of a successful literary piece.
