Abstract

The purpose of this article was to review some of the relevant literature applicable to women’s employment in the context of Maldives. It also reviews the status of women’s employment in the Maldivian tourism industry by focusing on the employment in the tourist resorts. Tourism has become the world's largest industry that provides employment and contributes to GDP. Tourism is also seen as an avenue for income generation for women. Women represent 50% of the labor force worldwide. Even with education and skills, they are a minority in the workplace. Hence, this review provides an understanding of the status of employment related to women in the tourist resorts of Maldives.
