Data analysis revealed that the value proposition factors had more impact on brand switching behavior than service failure factors. However, both value proposition and service failure factors were not found a significant impact on switching behavior among pre paid customers.Item An Empirical Analysis of The Firm-Specific Internal Factors on the Profits of Insurance Companies in Sri Lanka(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies University of Kelaniya., 2024-11-11) Hansini, W.W.; Sudasinghe, S. L.; Fernando J.A.H.P.The insurance sector plays an important role in the national economy, managing risks and providing financial security. The goal of every company is to achieve optimal profit. Profits are important to investors and management as sources of dividend payments and growth. For insurers and regulators, profits provide additional protection against insolvency. Therefore, companies must identify the factors that affect their profits. This study investigates the impact of premium income, claim expenses, risk-based capital, underwriting results, and investment return on the profit of life and general insurance companies in Sri Lanka. The study sample consists of all life and general insurance companies in Sri Lanka from 2016 to 2022. A quantitative approach is used for this study. Independent variables include premium income, claims expenses, risk-based capital, investment returns, and underwriting results. Profit is considered the dependent variable in the regression model. Descriptive analysis, correlation analysis, and panel data regression are used to analyze the data in this study. As a result, the profit margin of insurance businesses in Sri Lanka would be greatly impacted by premium income, claims expenses, risk-based capital, investment return, and underwriting performance. The regression results could not reject every null hypothesis for the life and general insurance industry. More specifically, neither model rejected the null hypothesis that claimed that profit is not much impacted by risk-based capital and investment return. The analysis showed that underwriting outcomes, claims costs and premium income significantly affect profit.Item An Empirical Investigation Into Determinants of Success of Foreign Financed Development Projects in Sri Lanka(2010) Ubayachandra, E.G.; Silva, H.W.N.S.By this empirical study it was aimed to investigate into the factors that affect the success or performance of foreign financed community based development projects in Sri Lanka. Out of the 548 existing project implementing organizations (Action Plan 2006) for the convenience of the analysis 64 organizations covering 15 districts were taken into consideration. The selected organizations are mixed with UN organizations, government and semi-government ventures, international NGOs, local and national NGOs. For collecting data 250 questionnaires which were received back without rejection were administered among the selected organizations. The key purpose of the study was to evaluate the influence made by identified couple of factors on success of considering projects. Specific objectives were to examine the interrelationship between main two factors and to identify the influence made by infrastructure facilities on success of these projects. For this purpose three research questions were addressed. They are; what is the degree of influence made by two factors on success? What is interrelationship between two factors? What is the influence made by infrastructure facilities on success? Success of the projects was estimated in terms of allocation of resources, goal attainment and other impacts associated with productivity and quality improvement. Univariate analysis and Byvariate analysis were employed in analyzing the data. Furthermore, "t" test and "F" test were applied fortesting respective two hypotheses. In computing P value it was considered that for high significant level should be equal to 0.05 and for significant level a should be equal to 0.10. For more clarification SPSS computing software version was associated. As indicated by the results of discussion it was noted that though both endogenous factors and exogenous factors make influence on success of projects, a dominant and vital role is played by endogenous factors in determining the performance of community based development projects in Sri Lanka. Thus a great attention should be paid on endogenous factors in strategically planning and implementing these projects.Item AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE RELEVANCE OF ACCOUNTING INFORMATION ON INVESTOR?S DECISIONS(2010) Perera, R.A.A.S.; Thrikawala, S.S.Recent empirical work has suggested that Accounting Information (AI) have lost their relevance to investors significantly over the past few decades. AI contained in financial statements to be accurate and transparent enough to provide an indication of a business performance and financial condition to decision makers including investors. According to the present empirical evidence, investors tend to focus on information other than the published accounting information such as non financial information, short term capital gains and tend to be speculative or irrational for unusual events. Therefore, this study attempts to addresses the relevance of AI on investor?s stock market decisions in Commercial Banks registered under Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) in Sri Lanka. The relevance of accounting data was measured by correlation coefficient between Market Price per Share (MPS) and selected accounting information such as Earning per Share (EPS), Return on Equity (ROE) and Earning Yield (EY). The data analysis was based on the AI in the published financial statements of Commercial banks registered under CSE. It covers a period of 5 years from 2006 to 2009. According to the findings there is a relationship between Accounting Information and Market Price per Share. Further it revealed that investors still consider Accounting Information which contain in the published financial statements of Commercial Banks registered under CSE for the stock market decisions in Sri Lanka.Item An Examination of Valuers’ Perceptions on Property Valuation during an Economic Crisis: Evidence from Sri Lanka(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies University of Kelaniya., 2024-11-01) Mendis, B. S. N.; Perera, T. G. U. P.Uncertainty, an inherent characteristic of property valuation, is a common phenomenon that cannot be avoided. Nevertheless, the material uncertainty in property valuation should be treated with special professional consideration by valuers. Most recently, Sri Lanka faced a severe economic crisis, increasing the likelihood of presence of material uncertainty in the valuation process. This paper aims to investigate whether there was an abnormal uncertainty in property valuation during the economic crisis of Sri Lanka and to identify the behavioural changes of professionals prompted by the crisis. Data for the study was collected through semi-structured interviews with 12 professional valuers who were selected purposively and analyzed using thematic analysis techniques in conjunction with the theoretical lens of prospect theory. The findings revealed that the valuers indeed experienced abnormal uncertainty in property valuation due to the economic crisis, leading to behavioural changes in valuers which were more subjective in nature. This paper recommends establishing a framework for addressing abnormal uncertainty in property valuation to ensure consistency within the profession. Furthermore, it recommends further investigations into abnormal uncertainty regarding specific property categories and valuation types, including statutory valuations.Item An Exploratory Study On Understanding The Influence Of Hedonic Motives In Fashion Retail Websites On Emerging Impulse Customer Decisions – A Concept Paper(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies University of Kelaniya., 2024-11-01) Nisansala, K. T. D.; Samarasinghe, G.D.; Mudalige, D.M.The concept paper proposed here is leading to conduct an exploratory study on “understanding the influence of hedonic motives in fashion retail websites on emerging impulse customer decisions”. W. H. G. K. K.; Hewaarachchi, A. P.; Kavinga, H. W. B.; Wijebandara, W. A. C.Women's engagement in the workforce is a key factor in driving economic growth in Sri Lanka. Despite the country's advancements in recent years, women still face significant challenges that prevent them from fully participating in the workforce. The objective of this study is to explores the potential labor force of women in Sri Lanka and the factors affecting their participation, using data from the Labor Force Survey 2021. Analyzing data from 41,171 women out of 77,869 individuals using a binary logistic regression model, the study considered factors such as marital status, education level, age group, relationship to the head of the household, district, sector, ethnic group, religion, Sinhala literacy, and English literacy. The results showed that all the variables except for Religion, are statistically significant. Married and widowed women are less likely to participate in the labor force compared to never-married women, while separated and divorced women are more likely to participate. Women in districts like Nuwara Eliya, Kilinochchi, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Badulla, and Rathnapura have higher labor force participation rates. There is a notable gender gap in labor force participation, with males participating more actively than females; over half of the working-age female population remains economically inactive. Females constitute most of the unemployed demographic. Despite being more prevalent in urban and rural areas, labor force participation rates are higher in the estate sector. Most women abstain from job searches due to household responsibilities and education levels. Nearly half of discouraged women are concentrated in younger age groups, with 26% aged 25-34 and 21% aged 35-54. The study underscores the necessity of policy interventions to address barriers to women's labor market participation, especially in household duties and education, to enhance Sri Lanka's female workforce potential and contribute to its economic and social development.
