Item The Need for Reverse Logistics: Unravelling the Producer Responsibility(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Abraham, S.; Mohammed, M.; Asfraf, R.Everyone wants a clean environment and surroundings. The onus of this often rests with the government be it the Centre, state or Local Self Governments. There are of course funds for such initiative. At all these levels funds are allocated for waste removal. Waste management is not about mere removal which ends in dumping. Upon close examination it can be seen that when it comes to items like plastic packaging, tyres and e- waste, nobody knows how to manage these categories better than the people who manufacture them. The waste management is an unsolved issue particularly in developing countries like India. The bulk of municipal solid waste is in fact discarded packaging. The producers/manufacturers and brand-owners have an obligation under the Extended Producer Responsibility to find solutions to discarded packaging. Using the existing laws and legal framework available and the 4 years’ data available from 4ULBs/LSGs to derive weights and volumes of plastic and other packaging from municipal solid waste and work out cost implications of the same. Nearly 84 % of the dry waste generated form ULBs/LSGs consists of plastic and other packaging. This indicates that the role of producers and brand owners is not insignificant. They should definitely aim at sustainable business models either by helping ULBs/LSGs manage their waste through proper recycling supply chain so rent rust PROs with the task bearing financial obligations of the same.Item Transition of World Cashew Industry: Challenges Ahead for India(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Bhoodes, R.K.; Ramanatha, H.N.; Mathew, G.C.Cashew is an important commodity traded across the continents and the world cashew industry is the livelihood of more than three million people worldwide, the majority of whom are womenfolk from the socially and economically backward community of the developing nations. India was the first country to hit the world market with cashew as a commodity and it was she who pioneered cashew processing as an industry. For decades together India was enjoying a monopoly in the world cashew industry. The liberalization of international trade has brought in a big transition in the field of cashew. India started to benefit from the trade policy, but with more raw nut producing countries acquiring the knowhow of processing coupled with vast mechanization in cashew processing, India started losing her premier positions in the world cashew scenario. The inability to make use of opportunity, foreign entrants in the domestic market, foreign suppliers of raw nuts, reduction in the international market share, shift in the processing, identify new market are some of the major challenges that awaits Indian cashew Industry. This transition of world cashew industry and the challenges that await India in the years to come in view of these continued transition were the subject matter of this research work. The findings of the study enable the Indian cashew Industry to gear up to cater the ever increasing demand of the domestic market as well as to contribute in a better way to the growth of the country. Though there has been a lot of research conducted in the field of cashew, the gap of a research in the above mentioned dimension is huge. This prompted the researcher to conduct a study in this aspectItem The Impact of Knowledge Sharing Factors on Talent Retention: A Study of Private Sector Organizations in Sri Lanka(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Silva, H.M.S.V.; Sandeepani, S.H.M.In current environment, Modern knowledge based companies were taken knowledge as the weapon to gain competitive advantage from the market through high talented people. Even though there are considerable amount of studies conducted on this area, there remain few empirical and theoretical findings on extending the Job Demands- Resource theory in to work family domain, especially in the Asian context. Further, this concept paper propose the mediation effect of emotional exhaustion on the relation between job demands and job resources on work family conflict and propose the moderation effect of job demands and job resources. A conceptual model is proposed at the end of the paper that enables the future researchers to test empirically in different environments. The significance of this paper is, it proposes the mediating effect of emotional exhaustion, which has not been examined to explain the relationship between job demands and job resources with work family conflict in the previous research studies while advising managers to find what factors make employees less exhausted and enjoy their work that reduce work family conflictItem Pro-Social Behaviour: A Comparative Study among Online and Local Taxi Drivers(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Mathew, G.C.; Ramanathan, H.N.; Joseph, D.India’s car lease industry has recorded a whopping growth for the last couple of years. The Indian cab chartering market’s proceeds is extrapolated to proliferate at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 35% and is likely to be valued around Rupees 800 billon in another two years. The car rental business has emerged as one the fastest growing business. Unreliable local (public) taxi attributed with arrogant behavior of drivers, exploitation and unfair rates are some of the major problems encountered by the common public in these days. Emergence of online taxi services resulted in a shift in demand from local taxi services to online taxi services. Print media as well as visual media reported that there are many reasons behind this shift and one of the important factors that they identified is the attitude and behavior pattern of taxi drivers. The main objective of this paper is to explore whether there is difference in the prosocial behavior pattern of online taxi drivers and local taxi drivers. Societies require a great level of cooperation and accommodative nature for the survival. This study adopted a descriptive research and used Mann-Whitney U, non-parametric test. The result of this study indicates that, there is a significant difference in the pro-social behavior pattern among Online and Local Taxi Drivers. The behavior of helping and caring others can be termed as pro-social behavior. It is observed that the helping natures of human beings are not occurring in an unrelated way, but it occurs because of the symptomatic relationship of various factors. Inadequate research in the field of pro-sociality makes the research gap wider. A study of prosocial behavior among cab drivers makes this study unique and presumes that this study will enlighten and provide exciting directions in pro-social research which may take this discipline to new horizonsItem Long-Run Performance and Impact of War on Risk-Return Characteristics of Initial Public Offerings in an Emerging Market: Evidence from Colombo Stock Exchange(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Hewage, J.K.; Fernando, C.S.P.K.This study analyses the long-run performance of 34 Sri Lankan Initial Public Offerings listed during 2000 – 2014 and focuses on the changes in risk-return characteristic since there is only handful of prior investigates regarding the impact of civil war on IPO risk-return changes relatively to developed markets. The first objective is to provide evidence on long-run underperformance or over performance. Hence, IPOs underperformed the benchmark in the long-run subject to Event-time Approach. The second objective is detecting the changes in the performance of IPOs relatively to Market-adjusted-Average Cumulative Abnormal Returns and Buy-and-Hold Abnormal Returns. Thirdly, the analysis discusses how risk-return characteristics differ between two IPO samples. Post-war IPOs appear to be less risky while pre-war IPOs revealing higher risky and subject to non-systematic risk in the long-run, yet with same magnitude of returns. Authors believe that investors can use this information to identify profitable strategies to overcome long-run underperformanceItem Importance of Symbolic Stimulus in Consumer Perception(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Mandapathil, J.V.; Ambeesh Mon, S.Consumer perception plays a leading role in brand building and has a dramatic effect in shaping the consumer buying behavior. This area opens huge prospects for future research, since symbolic factors contribute much to the marketing budgets of any organizationItem Impact of Demographic and Organization Centered Factors on Perceived Over Qualification and Employee Wellbeing in Kerala Economy(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Rasheed, R.Kerala has achieved high human development indicators among all other States in India. On the other hand the State also ranks first in educated unemployment. The high proportion of educated unemployment resulted in an oversupply of arts and science and professionally qualified graduates without adequate job openings. As a result highly qualified employees are working in both private and public sector jobs requiring lesser level of education resulting in a phenomenon known as over qualification. These employees are found to accept less demanding jobs in order to prevent them from being unemployed. As such the objective of this paper is to analyze the impact of demographic and organizational variables on perceived over qualification and employee wellbeing of overqualified employees. For an adequate representation of data a sector had to be selected where both government and private organizations mutually co exists and a plenty of overqualified employees are working. Banking sector in India satisfies this criteria and hence the data had been collected from full time regular employees working in both public sector and new generation private banks in Kerala. The population of the study is “the employees working in the position of officers and clerks in banks”. Employees above 50 years of age were ignored and thus the data has been controlled for nature of jobs and age. The sample size is 561 and the study adopted stratified proportionate sampling in order to select the sample. Perceived over qualification is found to differ significantly among organization type, educational qualifications, age and experience in the current job. Employee wellbeing is found to significantly differ across organization type, educational qualifications, marital status and experience. The study is an eye opener towards the extent of problem of over qualification in Kerala. The study stresses the need for devising an effective manpower planning policy for our State to provide a supply of labor that matches the requirements of the IndustryItem A Neural Network Analysis on Privacy Confidence on Digital Data among Members of LinkedIn Professional Network in India(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Sreejith, S.; Raman, P.Privacy is an essential conception in law, social, cultural and ethical aspects. The study also tried to group the respondents based on their digital confidence. The study identified that there are two clusters as Cluster 1 represent high degree of digital confidence and Cluster 2 low degree of digital confidence. There are associations with both clusters and profile of the respondents such as age groups, education groups and occupational groups. Moreover the Neural network analysis revealed that the categories belonging to education groups and occupational groups are having high level of importance in determining the characteristics of digital confidence clustersItem An Integrated Model for Green Computing towards Sustainability(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Jayarathna, B.C.P.The concept of Green Computing is widely taken into consideration by both local and global computing industry due to serious environmental issues such as global warming, high energy consumption, and e- waste. Thus the global community strongly believe that Green computing contributes to solve these environmental issues and achieve sustainability. However it is doubtful that, does green computing really contributes sustainability since there are lack of scholarly evidence. Therefore this study aims to propose an integrated model for green computing towards sustainability in order to identify how green computing contributes to achieve sustainability. In that model green computing is recognized as four major stages as Green design, Green manufacturing, Green use and Green disposal while sustainability is indicated with three major aspects as economic, environment and social performance. Since there are some vacuum of experimental research in the field of green computing towards sustainability and the existing studies were more focused on only environmental impact of green computing rather balancing all three dimensions of sustainability, the researcher concludes that proposed model will be more reasonably addressed the sustainability in the field of green computing by addressing all three aspects of sustainability including environment, social and economicItem A Study on the Export Competitiveness of Indian Industries(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Menon, C.V.; Thomas, M.; DevikaOvertime with liberalization, International Trade has grown to be significant contributor towards foreign exchange and national income. Considering this premise, this research endeavor is aimed at evaluating the mission statements of public quoted companies in Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE). The entire population of the CSE is 298 companies, the sample selected through multi stage sampling method, and it was consisted 78 companies. The mission statements were retrieved from the respective websites, while the analysis was done under two stages. To test the richness of the statement, it was applied the model developed by Pearce and David (1987) and David (1989). To test the level of readability, the fog index was used. Analysis of statements for richness proved that the sample firms in our study generally did not include needed components in their mission statements. The most popular components the sample firms most often included was Product and service, Philosophy and public image. Secondly it was recorded a very poor readability index for mission statements of all the companies. This high score implies the need to review and rewrite the mission statements by reducing sentence length and the use of multiple-syllable words.Item Developing Effective Reading Skills in ESL through Blended Mode at Tertiary Level(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Ravindran, S.Education is human right. Yet due to various negative factors such as poverty, poor educational background at home, lack of trained English teachers, not attending ESL classes regularly, no motivation, war situation and other socio, political, and cultural aspects the learners fail to obtain the reading skill proficiency. The success of mastering all four language skills and grammar in the second language is very challenging. Reading skill was considered as a passive skill. It has been taught and learnt through traditional face to face mode. Even though various teaching methods and approaches were postulated from time to time, less emphasis has been given to developing reading skills. This research is to explore whether (traditional and computer assisted blended language learning) Blended Learning mode could be utilized to develop reading skills at the tertiary level. Fifty first year students from the Faculty of Arts were taken as sample for the study. Their performances in reading skills were tested before and after teaching reading skills through the Blended Learning mode. It was found that the participants' performance in reading skills improved. The research findings disclose the fact that the Blended Learning mode has a positive impact on the development in the participants' proficiency in the reading skills. The study has an implication of recommending Blended Learning mode of teaching and learning to improve effective reading skills at the tertiary levelItem A Study of Behavioral Finance Attributes that Influence the Gold ETF Investments of Indian Investors(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Sheeba, K.H.In India, gold ETFs were launched mainly with the objective of increasing the liquidity for the better market efficiency. But, though, traditionally, Indians love to buy gold and they want to possess it, even after assuring the benefits of Gold ETF Investments over the other Investment avenues, there is the lack of pooling of funds towards this sector. In fact, they hardly go for ETFs which is just a piece of paper for them. Conventional Economic theories and its survey reports do not clearly explain the reasons behind this phenomenon. The proposal hence is made to explain the behavioral finance attributes that influences Gold ETF Investments in Indian Investors. The researcher made an attempt to find out the demographical composition of samples and to analyze their quantum of investment towards Gold exchange Traded Funds Investment and the data were analyzed using Exploratory Factor Analysis with the help of SPSS.Item Pathway to Develop a New Agile ERP Implementation Approach(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Rajakaruna, R.J.P.K.; Wijayanayake, W.M.J.Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) plays a key role in technology driven Business Process Reengineering (BPR) by ensuring smooth alignment with best business practices and dynamic market needs in current business setting. According to Gartner analyst firm, around 75 percent of ERP enabled BPR projects were failures in recent 10 years. However, ERP specialists regard agile approaches positively to mitigate common ERP implementation downsides. Although agile practices are widely used during designing, development and quality assurance process of ERP projects, they are rarely applied for the implementation process. However, only limited studies have been conducted on the synchronicity between the ERP implementations and agile approaches. The purpose of this research was, therefore, to explore a partway to develop a new agile ERP implementation approach. A questionnaire analysis was carried out in Sri Lankan ERP implementation companies. It was analyzed using statistical approaches to assess the coexistence between the ERP implementation success and agile approaches. A widely used performance metric in strategic management was used to assess the success level of ERP implementation projects. The analysis revealed that there is a significant positive correlation between agile approaches and ERP implementation success. At the same time incremental change, multiple project views, business value prioritization and change management act as key success factors for agile implementation of ERPs. The findings of the research would be an aid to the practitioners and academics in the respective field.Item An Empirical Investigation on the Impact of Port-Based Development Projects on the Fishermen Community(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Antony, O.P.; Helan, A.P.; Ramanathan, H.N.Port-based development projects like International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) Vallarpadam, Kochi, Kerala, India has created a pressure on the livelihood security of fishermen community in the locality. Using a stratified random sampling technique 187 samples were selected from the fishermen population of Goshree islands located in the Vembanad Lake. These islands include Vypin, Bolgatty, Vallarpadam and Thanthonni Thuruthu. A structured interview schedule was used for collecting data through personal interview method. The primary data was analyzed with the help of SPSS. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) technique was used to derive the results. The analysis reveals that the setting up of port-based development projects like International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) Vallarpadam resulted in the loss of fishing facilities for fishermen which affect their livelihoodItem Economic Value Added as a Performance Measurement Tool: A Study on Selected Banks in India(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Antony, A.; Subramanin, V.Banks has significant role in the economy as it constitutes an important aspects of Indian Financial System. But in recent year its profitability was adversely affected because of stressed assets. The assets stress has hampered credit growth of the economy. Five banks were selected to evaluate its performance both in terms of financial performance measures as well as value based measures. The main objective of the study was to evaluate the financial efficiency of the banks and also the contribution of the banks in value creation towards its shareholders. The period of the study was 2014-2018. The EVA and MVA were the two value based measures and the dependent variable of the study. The independent variables are Net Profit, Operating Profit, ROA, ROCE, PAT, CAR, EPS and EVA. From the two regression models, the stronger one was the Economic value Added as it was found that 67% of the variation of the dependent variable was due to the independent variables. It is observed that the MVA of all the four private sector banks has steadily improved over the years. The same cannot be said of SBI where the MVA has eroded significantly. The study help to identify whether the banks are properly utilizing the capital invested and creating value for its shareholders. However, study shows that Operating Profit and ROCE is highly correlated to the value performance measures of the banksItem Factors Affecting the Adoption and Use of Mobile Money in Africa(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Alhassan, A.; Li, L.,; Reddy, K.; Duppati, G.This research provides preliminary results on context based factors that determines the adoption and use of mobile money (MM) in Africa. Using data from several sources, including Research ICT Africa, International Telecommunication Union and the World Bank, the hypothesized research model tested the context based constructs such as the availability of electricity, enabling regulation and rural dwellings with the technology acceptance model (TAM) to determine how these constructs affect peoples’ intentions and attitudes towards the continuous adoption and use of MM. Exploring these constructs using the structural equation modelling (SEM) technique, the empirical results suggest that the perceived availability of electricity is an important factor for the mobile phone functionality to enable adoption and use of MM. Perceived enabling regulation also show a correlation with individuals’ intention to adopt and use MM. However, perceived rural dwelling is found to negatively correlate with individuals’ attitudes and intentions to adopt and use MM because of the inadequate or lack of mobile network and national grid in rural areas. The policy implication is that African governments’ public-private partnerships (PPPs) can assist with the construction of the relevant infrastructure for shared growthItem Advertisement Appeals and AIDA Principle: A Correspondence Analysis Purview(9th International Conference on Business and Information (ICBI-2018), Department of Management Studies and Toc H Institute of Science and Technology, India, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Chacko, C.P.; Menon, G.S.; Paul, F.; John, E.; Nizar, N.; Suhail, M.; Nizam, H.Advertisement is an effective tool used to create positive opinion among the consumers about the brand/product. Advertisement has a significant impact on the consumer at a subconscious level. The primary purpose of this study is to find the correspondence between the various advertisements appeals associated with the outcomes. And this study has examined the relationship between appeals and outcomes in a multi-dimensional space. Five appeals have been taken and the perception of these appeals has been ranked. Questionnaires were used to collect the data. The research design was descriptive in nature. The target population for the present research is focused on youth in the age group of 19-30 years and the number of respondents selected for conducting the study was 114. When correspondence analysis test was conducted, it was found that humor is highly associated with interest, desire is highly associated with rational and sensuality, humor is closer to attention, fear is closer to action, bandwagon is closer to action and desire which signifies that different advertisement appeals have different perpetual impact on consumer buying behaviour.
